Chapter 34: The Master
"Let her go, voice!" I cry,
"Shadow, keep your friend under control."
"Shut up!" Shadow cries, yanking me back out of the clearing. "Leave her! It's nearly night! You'll die from the mobs and the voice if you stay!"
"Shadow!? You were possessed, started a war, and, and - how are you even alive?"
"Pfft, I'm not Shadow anymore - I'm... well, I guess. Never mind it's none of your business."
"You'd better tell me right now because it is absolutely my business! That creepypasta voice just literally said you were friends."
"Okay, she did not."
"Well, it was implied because she said you'd brought friends to visit it."
"Well, why are you even here, nobody leaves this place - at least, not sane."
"None of your business!"
"So tell me right now what your relationship with that voice is and who you are or I SWE-"
"Okay, okay! Yes, maybe I'm that Shadow but it's not how it sounds! Okay, and I know, shocker I didn't die in the war I started. Okay, I didn't really start it that thing did but do I have to explain-"
"No, I already know-"
"Wait what!?"
"Just explain how you weren't killed by that thing!"
"My mom sacrificed herself for me."
"Wait - WHAT!? Sorry I was not expecting that."
"Ya, well someone took my place because I was going to be sacrificed, also a long story, and she was really powerful, the leader of the rebellion against my possessed self, but when she found out it offered her a deal - she gives her more powerful self and I'd live and the war would end. So she took it. And I never forgave myself." Shadow exhales, looking as though the entire world has been lifted off her shoulders, which it kinda' has since she tried to destroy it.
"So how do I get Ay from it!?"
"You have to make the voice a deal. Not even gonna' ask why you seem to know it, but whatever." Shadow shrugs, turning to walk away.
"Wait, you're just gonna leave me!?" I gape,
"Um... ya...?"
"NO WAY! You get back here, you destroyed the entire world and now you're going to do some help to fix it by freeing my friend there and hopefully helping me to not destroy it more!"
"I doubt you could destroy the world."
"Well I mean after I also get possessed, so get making deals!" I shriek - I think I'm going partially insane at the thought of losing Ay. Shadow blinks, gapes, and nods turning resolutely towards the structure and walking back in with me on her heels.
"Ah, you're back, good."
"Voice, I know there's good in you! Please give us back my friend! Please!"
"Good? What's that? I suppose I could give you back your friend, but then what would the fun be in that?"
"What do you want?" Shadow asks.
"I want to control the world, obviously." the voice laughs through Ay's drooping mouth.
"Fine. You'll possess me soon, so just let her go."
"Not if you find a way to slither away like Shadow here - we're close friends you know. I'm not going to risk it, besides two possessed leaders of war are better than one, anyway - especially if you escape."
"Come on, there must be some way!"
"I suppose you are much stronger than this one her... twice average. You trade yourself in right now to be possessed, and I'll release your... friend. What do you say?" The voice asks menacingly. Where's the voice who helped me escape? What happened to it? What did the Master do, whatever the Master is? But I have to make a decision - and I have to save Ay. This is my fault, I chose to jump after her, and I'm the one going to deal with it.
"Fine."
"No! Don't give in!" Shadow cries desperately, but I'm already walking towards the structure. I place my hands on the engraving and all of a sudden thousands of images flow through my mind, making me stagger and drown mentally, and I'm falling into darkness.
The Master's Halls stretch out before me in all directions. "Hello?" my voice echoes across the halls.
"Ah, you've made it, my prodigy."
"How do I know you've freed Ay?" I demand.
"Patience, S." A black cloud begins to materialize in front of me, warping into a distorted hazy figure, letting off fumes of cold smoke. "Soon you shall meet the Master. Follow." The cloud begins to rove left, glitchily flowing through the halls. I follow angrily. I'm absolutely terrified, if the voice is bad the one who controls it sounds far, far worse... we begin to pass hallways of bags, not unlike my mist. In response, I clench my hands tight and feel comforted at the small wisps of black smoke which drift from my hands. I'm not helpless, even though I have no inventory in this place. I have my wits, and that's enough - also the black mist is kind of reassuring.
"Are we nearly there?" I feel my lips trembling despite my best efforts. The voice does not respond, but its hazy form still darkens hallway after hallway. Finally, we seem to reach the end of the hallway, and I can immediately feel the chills running through my body, pouring over me like ice-water as we enter the large, circular cavern. The perfectly rounded doors slide shut behind us, and a moving picturing begins to glow on all sides...
There are villagers going about their duties, wandering traders cashing in their goods, there are the Minecrafters in their base and Warden is yelling at Sierra about... East? And then countless other unidentifiable ones. Until the last moving picture flows through my mind. "Jules?" I breathe. A solemn-looking girl and... Arjay? Are talking outside of a dark-oak house in a snowy taiga. Behind them, the only thing I can make out besides the house is a huge ice-spike. Then the vision changes to the structure, and I see myself - or my body at least. It's fallen onto the stone base of the frame, and above me stands Shadow and Ay, trying desperately to wake me up. But I can't, even if I tried.
"Welcome to the Master's Room, Esse. This is the screen of life, and it will show you everything past, present, and future - even things that have not been revealed to a living being before."
"Where's the Master?"
"He is here, can you not feel him, great warrior?"
"I can feel him, but I cannot hear him."
"Patience, S, for we are not one yet. Turn away, my prodigy, do not watch." The voice warns. I turn away obediently, hoping the Master isn't right behind me waiting to stab me, but I don't die so I suppose the voice is telling the truth.
"S, I've waited a long time for you. One who equals my strength has not walked the overworld in many, many eras." The voice echoes behind me, but in a different tone, and I know this is the Master's voice - for the Master now speaks using the voice. I turn around and see a tall man with evil, slanting eyes. I can't tell his colors, because they are all shades of grey, and I know if I tried to touch him my hands would go straight through him, for he is another hologram-like being made of mist.
"So, am I possessed, or what?"
"Ah, of course." The Master almost seems to laugh. Suddenly I feel something touch me from behind, and when I look around fearfully I see tendrils of black substance snaking around me, lifting me up, attaching themselves to each point of my body. "While you are possessed your spirit will remain in here, like now, while your body moves around freely in the overworld at my command. Once the tendrils encircle you fully your body will begin to move. You can watch everything you're doing on the screens."
"I get to watch myself destroy the world? Ooh, thrilling." I say sarcastically because there's nothing else I can say.
"Ah, this is going to be fun. Shadow was quite a bore - refused to talk her whole possession! Until the end, of course, when her mother gave herself up! How dramatic, you don't happen to have a relative who might step in? You know if someone gives themselves up willingly it's twice the power!"
"No, thank you very much! Also, I already gave myself up technically, so just - just - just stop talking!" I say angrily.
"Be careful what you say to me - I can make this much, much worse for you." The Master snaps his fingers and the tendrils pull tight, tighter, excruciatingly tight.
"Aaargh!" I cry against my will. I can feel the pains shooting up myself, but I cannot stop it, I cannot do anything but - I clench my fists as tight as they can. This is for Ay. "Aaaaagh!" I cry, and mist shoots from me, snapping the tendrils like twigs and dropping me to the ground. "Same-" huff, "here." I smile at the Master, now eye-level with me. Now he looks angry, his grin vanishing. With another snap, I watch Ay fall back to the structure, yet again possessed. "Let her go!" I cry angrily, horrified.
The Master smiles again and releases her as new tendrils grab me again and lift me into the sky, but this time I don't let out any sound when they squeeze even tighter. I don't resist - Ay is more important. The branches fully encircle me, finally enclosing around my forehead and melding together, shooting a spasm through me.
"Let the possession begin!"
