Kidnapper faculty meeting
I changed the cover! Although I'm not sure how well I really like it. If you would direct your attention to the right there should be two other covers I made. Should I change it or leave it?
Please don't forget to comment and vote! Actually commenting would be strongly appreciated considering the condition of my thought process when it comes to these damn covers!
The Phantom of the Opera is still not mine :(
Kat's POV
I took the rose and headed out the door. The prima donna room wasn't far away, and I wasn't wasting any time.
I slipped into the room unnoticed, or so I thought. Just before I stepped through the mirror a hand caught my arm, stopping me dead in my tracks. I spun around and met Ezra eye to eye.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, anger boiling up in my throat.
"I could ask you the same." Any trace of his sarcastic cocky self was gone and in its place was an alarmingly serious expression.
I squirmed out of his grasp and stepped further into the passage. Ezra followed me, as expected. "I'm not turning back, and you can't make me."
He grabbed my wrist and spun me around, I tried to pull myself lose but he was too strong. "Listen. I'm not here to stop you, I'm here to help." He loosened his grip, allowing me to jerk my hand away.
"Help?" I asked, my anger now laced with confusion.
"Help the two of you with whatever it is you're up to." He gave me a sideways grin.
I looked him over skeptically. He seemed okay physically, but he had definitely lost his marbles. "Are you okay? I mean wasn't it you yelling at me just last night about this?" I said and gestured to the tunnel around us.
"Maybe I changed my mind." His smile widened, making him look like a kid in a candy store. I crossed my arms and narrowed my eyes, causing his smile to fall. "What? I just thought it could be fun!"
"Fun? I don't see why you would find working with a homicidal maniac fun." I was trying to get him to leave, but it wasn't working. He just stood there staring at me, not flinching at all.
"Touche" He said. Then, with a slight smirk, he turned around, making me think he had given up, but instead of leaving he slid the mirror closed and brushed past me. I opened my mouth to protest only to be told to shut my trap. I followed, but ignored his orders. The whole way to the lair I commented on how he didn't know where he was going and how ticked Erik was going to be.
"Erik?" Ezra asked. I had been rambling on and I guess the name must have slipped out.
I folded my arms just above my stomach and resumed my annoyed attitude. "Yes, Erik. That's his name."
He rolled his eyes at me. "You mean The Phantom right?"
"Yep." I said wearily. Maybe I shouldn't have told him that. Man is Erik going to be pissed!
"Interesting." We came to an abrupt stop. I looked up at Ezra, not sure what he was talking about. Then I saw what he was gawking at, in front of us were two separate tunnels, one going left and the other right. I moved Ezra out of the way and took the lead, knowing exactly which way to go.
"I knew where I was going." Ezra said behind me.
"Yeah, sure." I sighed and lead on.
Within five minutes we reached the lair. I had Ezra stay back a ways. The last thing we needed was death by nuce, well more Ezra than me. I slipped off my shoes trying to be as quiet as possible. Erik was sitting at his organ, his back turned to me. I crept up behind him and peered over his shoulder. He had my book laying open on the keys, his finger following the words as he read.
"My sorrow, I could not awaken. My heart to joy at the same tone, and all I loved, I loved alone." I recited the my favorite line from the poem he was reading. He stiffened but didn't turn around.
"You are late." He closed my book and stood.
"You stole my book." I smiled as he walked around the bench to face me.
His green eyes lightened a bit. "Borrowed."
I placed a hand on my hip. "Uh huh. So what's our first order of business?"
"Well," his face went into its regular emotionless state, "seeing as how you chose to sleep through our first scheduled meeting." He smirked and continued. "I took it upon myself to deliver the first letter."
"The first?" I said with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, there are more." He said as he fixed his waistcoat. "You and your friend hiding, rather poorly I might say, in the shadows back there," he pointed towards Erza's hiding place, "will deliver them for me."
I heard Ezra behind me, walking slowly towards us. "So, what do these letters entail?" I tried to change the subject before he decided to strangle the one friend I had here.
He turned his gaze from Ezra and back to me. "In the first, I demanded that Christine be given the prima donna room for the night. The others are mostly just threats towards that pansy they call a patron and those blubbering buffoons that hired him." He turned and walked past me towards the Louis-Philippe room. "Oh, and I do believe there is one for our deafening diva." I heard him chuckle as he slipped through the door, er curtain.
"He doesn't seem that bad." Ezra said behind me.
He scared the hell out of me, again. "You should be glad he didn't murder you." I said through gritted teeth. I have an extremely short temper, so lets just say he was luckily I was too tired to chastise him right then.
About five minutes later Erik came out of his bedroom, his hands full with two small bundles of something. Ezra and I had been sitting at the organ. I was playing a few keys here and there while Ezra leaned back, his elbows resting on some of the keys. Erik shot him a cynical glare, but didn't say anything.
"What is that?" I said as he placed the bundles on the small desk full of drawings.
"Your disguises." He said simply, but explained further when he saw the looks on our faces. "Well you two can't very well walk around doing my dirty work as yourselves, can you?"
We both nodded simultaneously while he continued to fiddle with our 'disguises'. He eventually handed me a scarlet colored cloak, and Ezra a pitch black one.
"I'll be right back." He said and jogged to the room next to the bedroom. When he returned he was carrying two masks. On was a simple full-faced mask which he handed to Ezra. The top half was black and bottom white making it look like a backwards version of a mask from "Masquerade".
"And for you my dear." Erik handed me a much smaller mask. It was black with intricate dark red swirls covering it. There was a little bit of glitter on it, but not enough to attract too much attention.
"Cool." I slipped the mask on to find it only covered my eyes and part of my forehead and cheeks. I stood and walked over to one of the many oddly placed mirrors, slipping the cloak on in the process.
"Ooh la la" Ezra said as he walked over to me. He grabbed my hand and twirled me in circle, causing me to blush and giggle. " Our mistress of the night." He laughed and let lose of my hand.
I slipped the mask off. "I feel silly." I said and Erik scoffed.
"How do you think I feel everyday?" He said, staring Ezra down as he put on his costume.
"Sorry" I said dully and turned back to Ezra. He had his cape and mask on and was examining himself in the mirror. The mask was a bit larger than his face, making him look like a total dork. "What the hell are you supposed to be?" I asked sarcastically.
"Well excuse me miss perfect, but not everyone can look as gorgeous as you." He flipped his cape around dramatically and we both broke out laughing.
Erik cleared his throat behind us, we froze and turned to see why. "If you too are finished making fools of yourselves," he walked over to us and handed me five different envelopes, "these need to be delivered."
"Okay, what goes where exactly?" I said looking down at the notes in my hand. Not one of them had a name or any way of telling who they were for.
"Here." He took the notes back and began to sort through them, then handed two to Ezra. "The one on top goes to the fop and the other belongs to Carlotta."
"You really loathe that guy, don't you?" Ezra turned the top letter over, examining it. They were all simple white envelopes, each sealed with a red wax skull.
Erik snorted and mumbled something I couldn't hear, but I figured it was either rude, sarcastic, or both. "These are for Giry, Andre, and Firmin. In that order I believe." He said and handed me the other three notes.
I took the notes, careful not to mix them up or drop them. "And when would you like these delivered?" I asked, then realized how stupid of a question that must've been.
"Now." Erik said as he handed me the mask I had hung on the edge of the mirror. "I'm sure Christine is in the primma donna by now, so the two of you can't very well use that passage." He turned and led us to the other side of the organ.
I ran over to my shoes and slipped them on. "I'm going to assume you have a dozen different passages around here?" There goes another stupid question. I am seriously out of it tonight.
"A few more than a dozen my dear." Erik said as he pulled back a red curtain, revealing a narrow passage. "This should take you straight to the dorms." He said looking oddly proud of himself.
"That's not disturbing at all." Ezra mumbled as he slipped into the passage.
Erik narrowed his eyes. "Did you really need to bring that imbecile?"
"I didn't bring him on purpose, he more or less followed me." I said, still smiling at his question.
He rolled his eyes and held out his hand, helping me into the tunnel. "Oh here." He pulled my book from his jacket pocket, making me wonder when he had taken it from the organ.
I shook my head and slipped my mask back on. "No, you keep it. Just give it back once you're finished."
His eyes widen a bit and his eyebrow went up. "Merci." He said and reached for the end of the curtain he had pinned to the wall.
"Of course." I smiled and turned to leave. "Oh and thank you." I turned back around just before he let the curtain fall.
"For what?" He asked.
"For not murdering Ezra." I answered with a sheepish grin.
He scoffed and let the curtain fall. I rolled my eyes and turned around. I could see the light from Ezra's candle about a yard or so ahead and began walking toward it.
"He's a bit 'off' isn't he?" Ezra said once I was a few feet away.
I motioned for him to keep walking before answering him. "Hey, if you lived in a sewer for most of your life and were shunned by the whole world I'd think you'd probably be a bit 'off' too."
"Ah but you forget darling, I am about as mad as it gets!" He laughed and pointed a finger to his head, making circles around his temple.
"Thanks for reminding me, I almost forgot." I laughed and thumbed the notes I held in my hands.
Ezra fell silent after that. I followed him quietly, not having much to say myself. I really hadn't expected Erik to be so calm. That man confuses the hell out of me, I suppose I don't know as much about him, or any of these people, as I thought I did. My mind reeled as I tried to remember how tomorrow was supposed to go. I thought Notes came first then Primma Donna, then Il Muto, and then All I Ask of You, but I couldn't say for sure. It seems like the longer I'm here, the more I forget. I tried to picture my grandma's house, but no matter how hard I tried all I could see was my room.
My hands had started to shake, causing the letters to fall to the floor. The noise startled Ezra, causing him to jump and curse under his breath. I ignored his complaints and bent down to pick them up, luckily they had fallen straight down. They were still perfectly stacked except for one thing, in between the third and second letter was a small slip of paper. It was barely poking out and I was surprised I had even seen it. I pulled it out and unfolded it as Ezra snuck up behind me to peer over my shoulder. It was written in perfect cursive and addressed to me. We both read it to ourselves quietly.
Kat,
Meet me on the roof during the gala tomorrow night. Come in costume and if at all possible please try to leave that blubbering fool behind.
Yours truly,
Erik
"Yours truly? Blubbering fool? Who does this guy think he is?" Ezra scoffed behind me and I rolled my eyes. "And why does he keep calling you 'my dear' or whatever. Is that his weird stalker guy way of coming on to you or something?"
"Coming on to-?" I blushed and began walking again. "Have you lost your mind?"
He stepped in front of me to light the way. "Oh c'mon! You like him and even though a large part of me thinks that is utterly repulsive, part of me also thinks it's pretty cute." He grinned at me, making my cheeks grow even redder.
"Can we just keep walking now?" I asked, my eyes directed toward the darkness before us.
Ezra slumped his shoulders. "Ugh! Fine."
We walked in silence after that until we came to a narrow door. Erik had been right, I turned the handle and found myself standing just before the dorms. Ezra made me go out first to make sure the coast was clear, and it was. He ran off to deliver his notes, saying something about meeting me on the roof tomorrow. I waited until he was out of sight before I marched off to deliver mine.
It was late and the opera house was quiet, but I stuck to the shadows anyhow. I brushed past the primma donna room and heard voices. I wondered if it was Erik and if he was having any luck.
I decided to deliver Madame Giry's first, so I headed downstairs hoping it was the right way. Once I found the room, I slipped the note under the door and crept away before I was noticed. One thing I knew for sure was that Giry sees all.
After I was back on the ground level I headed for the grand foyer, hoping that the manager's offices were near by. To my surprise they were located right next to the dressing rooms. I left a note on each of their desks, then went back to my room. I slipped off my mask and rolled it up in the cloak before I walked through the dorms.
Most of the girls were asleep while a select few sat up reading or chatting. I slipped through my bedroom door, practically unnoticed. I hid my disguise under the bed then changed into a nightgown. It was around eleven and I couldm't hardly believe we had been gone a whole two hours. Time passes so quickly when you're underground. Hopefully a little sleep will somewhat prepare me for tomorrow. I already knew that it was going to be a very long day.
