chapter 6

Two days later, it is now the day of the festival, also Imani's birthday. Dikeleti and Damyra were scrambling through the house, looking for the perfect dress. Damyra found a yellow west african dress and Dikeleti found a red dress. Imani went to go ask her stepmother for the last time if she could go.

"Why would anyone want to look at an ugly wench like you, especially since your so violent", Damyra answered (referring to what happened a couple of days ago).

"Now daughter, that is enough...Imani, you can go...but I have a list of things you need to do", Dikeleti said while she handed Imani a list of about twenty five things to do.

Imani signed sadly.

"Is there a problem?"

"No stepmother"

"Great, well get started now"

Once Imani was done all of her chores, it was evening and it was time to get ready. She put on one of her favorite blue dresses and knee high sandals and gold hoop earrings, and put her afro into two puffy pigtails.

Once the stepmother and daughter were about to leave, Imani shouted "WAIT..WAIT!"

Once they turned around to see Imani, they were disgusted.

"Oh no Imani you can possibly be going like that, you look ugly", said the stepmother.

"This is one of my favorite dresses, please let me go"

"Oh Imani, Prince Ahkmenrah doesn't want anyone who looks like....THIS!"

Once Damyra said those words, she ripped part of Imani's dress.

Imani gasped in shock.

Then the stepmother jumped in and ripped another piece of Imani's dress while laughing. They kept going and going until Imani's dress looked like a huge mess.

"Remember, nobody wants a wench like you, have a unhappy birthday", Dikeleti said while she and Damyra walked out the door laughing.

Imani was so upset and angry, she ran outside crying.

She ran and ran and ran until she saw her mother's burial place. She got on her knees and cried out to her.

"Oh mother, I am so upset, they ripped one of my favorite dresses, plus they treat me like crap and call me names, I don't know what else to do, mother please, today is my sixteenth birthday, and it is terrible. I am on the verge of commiting suicide, MOTHER PLEASE HELP ME!"

Imani started to wail again.

But what she didnt know was that the spirit of her mother was behind her.

The spirit reached out and touched Imani's shoulder. When Imani turned around to see who touched her, she saw a bright light, which looked like the figure of a person. Then the light dimmed and she saw that it was her mother. Imani got up and ran to her and hugged her.

"Oh Imani, I am here, I've always been there for you. Now what is the problem my daughter?".

Imani told the spirit of her mother everything that has happened from the time she died to now, and how she really wanted to go to the festival.

"Aw, don't worry my child, you will go to the festival. Now let's see, OH IDEA! You can use that camel over there for transportation to the festival, it only takes thirty minutes to get there"

With the point of her finger, she put a pillow on top of the camel's hump, ready for Imani.

"I will use my powers to speed up the camel, that way you should get there in fifteen minutes instead of thirty"

"Thank you mother, but umm, what about my clothes, they are ripped very badly, and I have a minor black eye", Imani said sadly.

"Oh, my dear, we can fix that"

With the spirit's powers, she turned Imani's dress into a beautiful gold sparkling cleopatra-like dress, with gold sandals, gold nail polish, and gold eyeshadow with a egyptian makeup wing near the eye. She got rid of her black eye. Her afro turned into long african box braids with shiny gold beads. The top half of her braids were in a bun, the rest of her braids were out.

"OH MOTHER, THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH!", Imani said while climbing on top of the camel.

"Wait my daughter, there is another thing I have to tell you"

"Yes mother?"

"You have to be back home by two fifteen in the morning. By then, the spell will end and you will be back to normal. You have five in a half hours till then"

"That is plenty of time, thank you for telling that mother"

"Oh, by the way Imani, you are beautiful". Imani smiled in a way of saying thank you and headed out to  the festival. She memorized what the spirit of her mother had told her.

"Make sure you are back here by two fifteen Imani", Imani thought to herself. She smiled at the fact that all this time, her mother WAS there for her, right by her side.
