First Dates

Castiel's siblings, except for Gabriel, since he was still salty, were extremely excited that their brother was going on a date.

"Where are you going?" Michael questioned, lounging on Castiel's bed as Hannah and Balthazar tore through their brother's closet, and Anna messed with Cas's hair.

"Just out to the movies," Castiel shrugged. "I figured I'd take him to Harvelle's afterward."

"Awwww," Hannah squealed. "I ship it!"

"Just remember, Cassie," Lucifer insisted. "If at any point, he starts being a dick or you just want to bail, shoot me a text. I'll be there to take you home and rip him apart if needed."

"I don't think that'll be necessary," Cas replied.

"No, take the offer," Anna said. "It's gotten me out of three horrible dates so far, and it's worth it."

"And if you two fall in love and get married, then you'll have me to thank!" Gabriel proclaimed, waltzing into the room and flopping down on Cas's bed, despite the fact that Michael was already laying there.

"If you say so," Castiel smiled. He was excited. Nervous, of course, because he had never been on a date before, but Dean seemed so nice. It was bound to be a fun night.

Hannah and Balthazar selected a date appropriate outfit- Hannah's words, not his- of a pair of black jeans and a white button down. Anna slicked his hair in a style she deemed 'sex hair', and Chuck just grinned at his son and told him to be home by 11.

And as a old black Chevy rumbled up to the front of the house, Cas darted outside to meet it.

"Hey," Dean grinned.

"Hello,"

"Hop in," Castiel eagerly climbed in the car, trying not to blush at the feeling. He was on a date. With DEAN WINCHESTER, no less. What were the odds of that?

Dean reached for the radio and promptly paused.

"Um, how do you feel about classic rock?" He asked tentatively, not wanting to blast the music if Cas hated it.

But then again, if Cas hated classic rock, then there was a decent chance this date would be over before it even began.

"What band we talking?" Cas questioned. Lucifer had blasted heavy metal on a daily basis until Michael convinced him to dial things back to classic rock. Most of it was good, although there were a few bands that still made everyone in the Novak house slam their hands over their ears.

"AC/DC mostly. Metallica, Motorhead, Bob Seger..."

"I love Bob Seger!"

"Really?" Dean blinked in surprise and Cas nodded eagerly.

"Night moves, Old time Rock n' Roll? Bob Seger is the best," Dean grinned and clicked on his music, switching the song until a Bob Seger one came on.

They sang along to it the whole way to the movies, and fought over whether John Fogerty or Freddie Mercury was the better singer.

They were still debating as they walked into the theater.

"EVERYONE knows Freddie Mercury is the better singer!" Cas declared. "Queen is iconic!"

"Oh, and Creedence Clearwater Revival isn't?" Dean insisted. "John Fogerty is incredible."

"Agreed, but Freddie is better!"

"I think John could take him."

"Queen is a thousand times more iconic than Creedence Clearwater Revival. I could start singing Bohemian Rhapsody right now, and everyone in here would know the words and sing with me. They're that iconic."

"I'm not debating Queen's iconic-ness with you because Queen is insanely influential, but so is CCR!"

"Does anyone actually call Creedence Clearwater Revival CCR?"

"I don't know, but I do because it's easier than saying Creedence Clearwater Revival over and over again. And they're iconic too! Name ONE movie about the Vietnam war that DOESN'T play Fortunate Son."

"Name ONE other iconic song then, if they're so popular."

"Bad Moon Rising."

"....Name another."

"Have You Ever Seen The Rain." Cas scowled.

"Okay, fine, I'll admit CCR is awesome."

"AND that John Fogerty could totally take Freddie Mercury in a singing battle."

"Freddie would win."

"Well no duh, you can't just beat the Queen."

"Freddie Mercury. The original drama queen."

"You got that right."

"Hell yeah I do, Fortunate son." Dean smirked.

"I'm more of a wayward son than a fortunate one."

"Did you just make a Kansas joke-"

"I just made a Kansas joke."

"Oh my god." Dean laughed, and they headed into the movie theater, picking seats way in the back as previews starting playing.

"Now here's the real question," Cas whispered. "Who's a better band- AC/DC or Metallica?" Dean gasped.

"How could you CHOOSE?"

"Exactly."

"The Eagles or the Clash?"

"Oh my gosh, I don't know.... Warrant or Motley Crue?"

"Aerosmith or Foreigner?"

"Bob Seger or George Thorogood?"

"How about Bob Seger AND George Thorogood?"

"That...." Cas blinked. "That would break the world."

"I know." People in the row in front of them started to shush them as the movie started, and Dean and Cas exchanged a small smile before falling silent.

Dean wrapped his arm around Cas halfway through the movie, and Cas tried not to freak out. There was just something exhilarating about it all. He found himself wondering if all first dates felt like this, or it was just Dean.

He had a feeling it was the latter.

"What do you want to do now?" Dean asked as the movie let out. Cas checked his watch. It was only 10 o'clock. He had an hour until he had to be home, and he definitely didn't want to go back so early.

"Have you ever been to Harvelle's?" He asked. He figured Dean hadn't, seeing as he was still new to town. But Lawrence was a small town, so maybe he had been.

"Is that the diner Ellen Harvelle runs?" Dean asked.

"Yeah, home of the best root-beer floats in Kansas."

"I don't think I've been there since the last time I was in Lawrence," Dean commented. "So..... like a decade ago."

"Well then it's about time you went back," Cas declared.

So Dean drove them to Harvelle's, Cas pointing directions along the way.

"Do you know Ellen?" Cas asked, figuring Dean had to if he had known her name.

"She's an old family friend." Dean said. "She and Bobby Singer used to be really close to my parents when they grew up here. Mom always talks about how much she loved it here."

"If your parents loved it so much, why did they move away in the first place?" Dean shrugged.

"Wanted to believe they ran away from the little town, but didn't really want to leave the little town. Lebanon is just like Lawrence, so they were happy to move there."

"Then why move back now?" Dean's smile faded, and a strange look passed over his face. Cas got the feeling he had unknowingly crossed a line, said something he shouldn't. Brought up something Dean didn't want to mention.

"Um," Dean cleared his throat awkwardly. "Mom just wanted a fresh start. It was a good idea for all of us, really." His hands tightened on the steering wheel, and Dean forced a smile back on his face. "I guess it's a really good thing though. After all, if we hadn't moved, then I wouldn't be here talking to you, now would I?"

"True," Cas smiled.

They found a booth at Harvelle's, and Cas insisted that they get root-beer floats, just so Dean could experience how amazing they were.

They talked a little bit about everything, learning more about each other.

Cas relayed the basics of all his siblings, and Dean told him about his little brother. They talked about sports teams and old movies, favorite songs and places, things they hated and things they loved.

Dean liked cars and old music, Cas learned. He was a sucker for pie and leather jackets, and had played football at his old school in Lebanon. He hated fighting and people that wore sunglasses indoors, but he loved his family and car more than anything else in the world. He wasn't the best student, but he always made sure to pass so that his mom wouldn't worry. His brother Sam was the smart one, he insisted, always interested in books. His mom was a horrible cook, but they ate her food anyway.

He mentioned nothing about his father, and very little about his friends and life in Lebanon.

Cas liked old books and board games, Dean learned. He couldn't turn down ice cream, and he had never lost a game of chess in his life. He didn't like sports much, but he had been on the wrestling team at Lawrence High for two years now. His brothers had given him a lot of practice with wrestling, so it only seemed right for him to join the team. His family was ridiculously close, so if his siblings hated somebody, then Cas didn't like them either. He hated unnecessary arguing and people who said li-BERRY instead of li-BRARY, but he loved musicals and his few friends. He was a bright student, and used to get paid by his siblings to do their homework. His dad was over-stressed and overworked, but he was the best parent in the world, according to Cas, and he was sure his siblings agreed.

They lost track of time talking away, to the point where it was midnight by the time Dean's car showed back up at the Novak's house.

"This was fun," Dean grinned.

"Yeah," Cas smiled back. He blushed. "Maybe we should go out again." Dean nodded.

"I'll go make a bet with my brother. See if I can get you to go out with me by the end of next week." Cas laughed as he climbed out of the car.

"See you on Monday," He waved.

"See you!" Dean waved back, and drove off, honking the horn even though it was midnight and most people were sleeping.

****

Well, no one in the Novak house was sleeping, of course. Not when it was A) Saturday night and B) The lone innocent Novak left was out on a date with a stranger and an hour late for curfew.

So they were all waiting and lounging around the living room when Cas walked in.

"You are exactly 61 minutes and 37 seconds late for curfew," Hannah announced, stopping the clock on her phone.

"Sorry," Cas apologized sheepishly. "Lost track of time."

"Oh DID YOU NOW?" Gabriel said, waggling his eyebrows suggestively. Michael and Anna smacked him in unison.

"So I take it the date went well," Chuck commented.

"He didn't need me to kill anyone, so I assume so," Lucifer piped up.

"It was great," Cas grinned. "Dean's awesome." He flopped down on the couch next to Balthazar and Gabriel, a dopey grin still plastered on his face.

"Well shit, he's in love," Michael commented. "LUCI! Add Dean's name to the 'Brothers need to violently dismember this person' list!"

"You don't have to-" Cas started, but Lucifer had already grabbed the list. He grabbed a red pen.

"Dean Winchester," Satan wrote, adding the name right below Nick Jonas, Carlos Penavega, Harry Styles, and all the other pointless boy band crushes Hannah and Anna had had over the years.

Justin Bieber was also on the list, simply because no one in the house -except for Anna- could stand him.

"Don't kill him please," Cas insisted. "He was really nice!"

"Cassie," Chuck warned. "If he brings you home after curfew again, I give Satan and his cronies full permission to kill him." Cas's eyes widened.

"I'LL NEVER BE LATE AGAIN, I SWEAR."
