Top Princesses
I've been thinking about doing this, and decided why not tackle it?
I'm going to be rating all of the current official Disney princesses (from Snow White to Moana). For this list, I'll be considering their characters, talents, personal preference, and beliefs, not their looks. If anyone wants a 'who's the prettiest' list, I'll do that later.
I feel like Watch Mojo oh my gosh
Anyway.
Let's begin!
14. Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
All Aurora had going for her was her notoriety.
We know practically nothing about Aurora, other than that she lived in the woods for a while. She has eighteen lines in the entire film, and the only thing she actually does is fall asleep and remain completely unproductive while a random guy saved and in the original story raped her. Maybe I'm being unfair since people weren't as aware of girls being role models back then, but Aurora is a horrible role model.
Favorite song: Once Upon a Dream
13. Snow White (Snow White)
I do have to give Snow White some credit: She is talented and can take care of a house. Unfortunately, this was all people thought women were good for at the time, hence the "taking care of seven (!!) men" thing. Snow White also falls into the Aurora category of being rescused and swept off her feet by some random guy. Also, her voice is actually the worst. She gets more credit than Aurora because she has more than eighteen lines and is kind.
Favorite song: Heigh ho (because Snow White doesn't sing if memory serves me correctly)
12. Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
This movie is so problematic on so many different levels. I know a lot of people love Ariel (sorry, @Forever_Shadowhunter), but she's really . . . awful. In the Part of that World sequence, she admits to being a privileged, spoiled, rich brat, and then goes on to insist that she needs more. She becomes infatuated with a guy she doesn't know; he could be a serial killer but who cares, he's hot. I was going to credit her for saving Prince Eric, but I realized that the entire ship was sinking and she only saved Eric. She's a mermaid and could have rescued multiple people from death, and instead stares at Eric while everyone else is busy drowning. She sells her soul and her voice to a sea witch she knows to be dangerous (as if the garden of souls was not enough) in exchange for three days to make a guy lust over her. She can write (she wrote her name), but doesn't use this to communicate with Eric. Her father exchanges her soul with his, yet to say thank you, she ditches her family for the rest of her life FOR A GUY SHE JUST MET. Not to mention that I gives off the idea that girls are only useful to guys (and in general) if they're pretty. The only thing that saves her is her desire for adventure that Belle fulfilled much better.
Favorite song: Part of that World (her voice is spectacular)
11. Elsa (Frozen)
I swear I can hear the horrified gasps. Elsa is kind of a tyrant. She started a mess that Anna had to clean up, abandoned her country, and is generally not that great? But Let it Go, you say. But she's becoming an independent woman, you say.
She sends a monster after her sister, I say. She does not punch the bad guy, I reiterate.
I will give you that she was terrified of herself because she did hurt Anna. That's still no excuse for freezing a country and ditching.
Favorite song: Frozen Heart (I'm one of the only people to actually really like this one)
10. Cinderella (Cinderella)
Cinderella actually has a lot more going for her than I expected. First, she was kind to those who treated her as a servant and did not hold too much resentment towards them (though they probably needed a lesson). She respected and remembered her deceased mother. However, she did complain a lot in the film. "That old clock. Get up you say! I hear you, I hear you." She had her birds do most of her work, and she married the prince after a night of dancing.
Favorite song: A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes
9. Anna (Frozen)
Anna is spunky and more on the naïve side of the spectrum. For being the main character, she's pretty overshadowed by her sister Elsa. She cared for and sacrificed herself for her sister. After Elsa darted off, she went after her, helped unfreeze Arendalle, and punched Hans in the face.
Favorite song: Frozen Heart
8. Jasmine (Aladdin)
Jasmine is rebellious in the best sense. She doesn't want to be married off, wants to make her own decisions, and refuses to be treated as a prize. However, she does marry a complete liar. No offense, Aladdin.
Favorite song: A Whole New World
7. Merida (Brave)
Like Jasmine, Merida was not pleased with being someone's betrothed. She rejected that idea and shot for her own hand and ultimately won. She's a free spirit that cannot be tamed. She's fiery and has a temper. Sure, she got herself and her mother into trouble with the bear fiasco, but through it they were able to bond, and she remedied her mistakes on her own.
Favorite song: Touch the Sky (it's literally the only one)
6. Pocahontas (Pocahontas)
No matter what you say about the movie's historical inaccuracy, you've got to admit that Pocahontas is a great princess. She's adventurous and curious and she wants to choose her own path. She ceases the battle between the settlers and Native Americans (again, historically inaccurate, but that's a conversation for another time). She didn't break down when John Smith returned to England.
Favorite song: Colors of the Wind (!!)
5. Moana (Moana)
From here on out is where my bias kicks in. Because in all right Moana should get two or three for her deeds.
Sorry. She's really great, but she doesn't cut it for my ultimate favorites.
Moana is passionate, determined, and adventurous. She never strays from her destiny, nor does she spend any time worrying about a boy in any fashion. She's fascinated by her culture and by wayfaring, and she successfully restores the heart of Tafiti even after feeling her goal get stomped on (she is NONSTOP).
Favorite song: How Far I'll Go
4. Tiana (The Princess and the Frog)
Tiana is a fantastic role model. After long years of trial and error, she sticks to her dream and uses every bit of effort to earn it. She doesn't wait for a miracle, she creates it herself. She needs a blind voodoo lady to tell her that she needs to take it down a notch. She defeats the shadow man, learns about love being worth more than a goal, doesn't take crap from Naveen's womanizing, and achieves what she fought for. Plus, she can cook.
Favorite song: Down in New Orleans/Almost There
3. Rapunzel (Tangled)
Rapunzel is cheery, curious, and generally sweet. She's naïve, but for good reason, and not so much so that she comes across as annoying. Her personality is so refreshing and is what makes her such a great princess. Like Tiana, she is unwilling to give up on her dream which is really just a simple request. She doesn't judge Eugene for being a criminal. Once she discovers her royal lineage, she fights tooth and nail to return to her real family to distance herself from her kidnapper. When Eugene comes to rescue her, she is prepared to save him and doom herself to a lifetime of misery.
Favorite song: I See the Light
2. Mulan (Mulan)
In all rights, Mulan should be first. But I already mentioned bias, so . . .
Mulan is amazing. She's clumsy and cares about her family enough to take her father's place in war. She goes from an awkward failure to a war hero. She saves their lives on the mountain when there was a surety they would die. She breaks female stereotypes and proves that girls can fight and be awesome. She returned even when cast away and saved all of China and earned her honor.
Favorite song: I'll Make a Man Out of You
1. Belle (Beauty and the Beast)
Belle is my favorite Disney princess. I relate to her the most and aspire to be like her. She's compassionate, intelligent, she sees beneath the appearance of others. She yearns for a world beyond her own. "I want so much more than they have planned." She doesn't take crap from awful people who abuse books and is outcasted for both that and her adoration for the written word. She's defiant to the Beast until he reveals who he is behind the temper. She took her father's place as prisoner and saved him, and when he was in trouble she went to retrieve him. She returned to the Beast when he was in danger, and she broke the spell, saving them all.
Favorite song: Belle Reprise
Favorite song in live action: Evermore
