ShadowSong - If We Make It

A/N - I had feels and I'm trying to get back into the habit of writing.

This was intended as a "Ten years later, Olivia and Jason are snuggled up in bed when a Manifested happens and they spend the next five minutes trying to kick the other one out of bed to go deal with it" and then it turned into this.

Also I had no idea when to stop so it just kinda keeps going and I AM NOT TO BLAME FOR THE TRASH

On a late night, ten years after they'd officially 'saved the City' according to just about every person who lived in it, Olivia Shadowheart and Jason Frostsong were curled up under the covers of the large, fluffy King size bed in a hotel room that an unknown individual from the temple had paid for.

Olivia snuggled a little closer into Jason's chest, pressing her forehead against his collarbone. She felt his hand move from her back to stroke her hair, gently combing his fingers through what remained of her fancy hairdo.

"There's still bobby pins in here," he murmured, pulling yet another one free. Olivia heard the clink as he threw it on the bedside table. "How many did they use?"

"I stopped counting after the first hundred," said Olivia. She ran her hands over the all too familiar muscles in his back, tracing every curve and savouring the way he shivered when she pressed a kiss against his chest. "Today was fun, but I'm kinda glad I have you to myself right now."

"All you ever had to do was ask," said Jason, massaging her head with the tips of his fingers. "I'm all yours whenever you want me."

Olivia sank into his touch, the one thing that could relax her without fail. Here with him, she was safe. The one person she trusted enough to let her guard down. He could always--

Her tattoo went cold.

Olivia's eyes flashed open as soon as she felt it. She rolled over to look towards the window. Without her glasses, everything was blurry, but--

"Olivia," said Jason.

Olivia pressed her lips together. "There's a Manifested."

"And there's two other Luminary pairs capable of handling it."

"Raiju and Valkyrie have only been Luminaries for a month," said Olivia. "If they respond, they should have someone watching them."

"Which is what Pegasus and Nereid will be there for."

"But we're the elder Luminary pair now."

Jason planted his chin on top of her head, his hand resting on her shoulder. "The elder Luminary pair who are currently on their honeymoon, and under the threat of a slow and painful death from Harpy if we interrupt that by responding to a Manifested."

Olivia reached back, running her hand over his wrist. "I mean... only if Harpy knows that we've been there."

Jason sighed.

Olivia knew he only needed a little bit more of a push. "Aaaaand I mean, it's not like that we were intending on fighting the Manifested. Maybe we just felt like a bit of a nightly run. If Harpy did find out--"

"Are you telling me that you, Banshee, the Shadow of Skypillar and Saviour of the City, is scared of Harpy finding out that we were chasing Manifested?"

"Absolutely terrified of her and not ashamed to admit it."

Jason paused.

Olivia looked up at him. "Jase?"

He remained silent for a moment as the first chime of the bells rang out. "The Manifested sounds like it's in Aeledrae. Not too far from Kaladrel." He raised an eyebrow and gave her a conspiratorial look. "We could go, make sure Pegasus isn't teaching the newbies any bad habits."

"Or that Raiju doesn't electrocute Nereid again."

Jason nodded thoughtfully. "That did happen once."

They paused, listening to the silence as the bells fell flat.

"And you know," said Olivia, "It's the middle of the night. Always a slower reaction time for Luminaries, and we are already awake."

"That we are."

Another pause.

"So... we're going?" said Olivia.

Jason leaned down, planting a kiss on the tip of her nose. "Well, you seem to have your mind made up, and I'd be a poor husband if I let my wife go alone to do combat with strangers."

Olivia sat up. Jason went to follow her movement, but she pushed him back down with a finger.
"Excuse me, but I won't have you insulting my husband that way. Only I can decide whether he's doing a good job or not."

Jason raised an eyebrow as Olivia picked up a strand of his hand and ran it through her fingers. "Oh? And how has he been doing?"

"Well, it's almost been a day now, and he's yet to disappoint me," said Olivia. She grinned as she stepped off the bed and stretched her arms to the ceiling. "But that might be about to change."

Jason swung his legs over the side of the bed, straight-backed as he always was while he watched her. "And why would that be?"

"Because he's always been a bit of a slowpoke," said Olivia, dashing to the doorway of the walk-in closet. Both Ascended were sitting on one of the larger shelves with a miniaturised game involving starstone pieces set out between them. They looked up, not at all surprised when Olivia reached out a hand and called, "Viri! Ascend, Shadow of--ah!"

Olivia was cut off as the blanket was thrown over her head from behind. Strong arms wrapped around her midsection and threw her over a shoulder. No matter how much she wiggled and poked, Jason's grip remained firm as through the blankets, she heard his muffled voice.

"The almighty Banshee, captured by a blanket," he said. "Sae, you ready?"

"Ready?" squawked Sae. "Ready? To what? Be murdered by Harpy for allowing you two to transform on the one holiday you've both had for the last... how many years? What, Envy wasn't enough for you, now you want to--"

"Ascend, Frost of Skypillar!"

Sae's protests were quickly absorbed into a fading squawk of desperation as the snows swirled around Jason's form, gathering him up in the protective ice as it hardened and froze.

Olivia wasn't about to give up that easily. She got an arm free and reached up, feeling her way towards his head, but Cryo was onto her. He grabbed her arm and locked it down, leaving her straight back to wriggling.

"What's your plan?" she called out through the fabric. "You gonna carry me all the way to the Manifested wrapped up in a blanket? You...you hotel blanket thief!"

"Oh, absolutely not," said Cryo. "I would never dream of such things, my love."

Which was right about the time that he dumped the blanket unceremoniously on the bed, leaving Olivia to untangle herself from the blanket as she heard the sound of the balcony door open and felt the rush of icy air on her bare feet as Cryo took off.

With the blanket finally off her head, her hair going every which way, and everything still just as blurry as it'd been two minutes ago, Olivia locked on to the familiar violet glow of Viri's eyes coming from the walk-in closet.

"Oh, I'm gonna get him for that later," said Olivia with a grin. "Ascend, Shadow of Skypillar!"

Banshee caught up to Cryo a few blocks from the Manifested, where he was lazily flapping his way through the sky.

"You decided to join me," said Cryo. "I was unsure if you were ever going to arrive."

With a well-calculated leap, Banshee jumped from the rooftop. Midair, Cryo adjusted, angling his back to just the right angle for her landing. Her boot caught on the small, shaped piece of ice he always froze just above where his tailbone sat, and she wrapped an arm around his shoulder before leaning in to press her cheek against his.

"That was cheating," said Banshee.

"I believe you called it a 'fair use of environmental assets' in the past when you used the blanket strategy against me."

Banshee pouted. "Then it's still cheating because you stole my strategy."

"I do learn from the best."

Banshee planted a kiss against the top of his ear. "You're lucky you're cute." She glanced down at the ground, where the telltale blue-white wings of Pegasus were swooping down to where Raiju waited. "How are the newbies doing?"

"Nereid isn't here yet." As Cryo spoke, Pegasus clapped Raiju on the shoulder, nearly knocking the poor boy over. "Though I do have concerns about what Pegasus might be saying to Raiju right about now."

"...Enough to go down there and sort them out?"

"Oh, Skypillar, no," said Cryo. "If Harpy finds out we were here, we'll have to leave the City." He made a quick gesture towards the canal. "Besides, here comes Nereid."

Cryo's gesture dropped their altitude, enough to get within hearing range of Pegasus's booming voice.

"Nere!" said Pegasus. "Now that you're here, the three of us can make a really cool lightning storm!"

Both Banshee and Cryo went quiet.

"Oh dear," said Cryo after a moment.

"Oh dear indeed," said Banshee, leaning forward over Cryo's shoulder. "Imagine if we hadn't transformed. We'd have missed the whole thing!"
