Unmasking and Returning
Once on solid ground again, Chat was given a towel, and the teens got a chance to rest.
Abbie opened their home to them both, and after a hot meal, the two quickly fell asleep on the couches.
Morning came soon enough, however, and now that they'd found each other, the two sat down to work out how to get home.
"Unless we can recreate what Warpster did, I don't know what to try." Marinette murmured.
"Well, at least neither of us was seriously hurt." Chat replied. He looked at his feet as they shuffled across the floor. He knew the question was coming.
"...How did you know my name was Marinette?"
He leaned back in the chair. "I'd seen you before...your parents run a bakery, and you're frequently standing out on the balcony...you have the same hairstyle as that girl."
Marinette blushed. "I suppose..."
"Your parents don't know it's you, right?"
"No...do yours?"
"Nah..." He sighed. "My dad's too busy to care, anyway..."
"You won't tell anyone, right Chat?"
"Not if you keep my name a secret too... If I know your name, it's only fair that you know mine."
"Chat...if you don't want to tell, you don't have to-"
"We're partners, right? Partners don't keep secrets from each other... My name isn't Chat Noir...It's Adrian Agreste."
Marinette's antennae, normally curled, straightened upwards as she gasped, covering her mouth. She had suddenly reverted to her shy, seemingly mute self.
"Oh come on! You could talk to me just fine a second ago!"
Marinette cleared her throat. "You're right, I'm sorry...But how come you don't act-"
"Like I do at school? That's the fun part, you don't have to act like your normal self when people don't know who you are. You should know that, you're a shy, clumsy high schooler by day."
Marinette blushed even more. "So... which is the real you...?"
"The one who doesn't have to worry about appearances, the one who can act recklessly and it never points back to his father...the father he wishes wasn't so busy..."
Marinette slumped in her chair a little. "...I can't pretend to know how you feel."
"It's not your fault...I just wish...Wish I knew what happened to my mom...ever since she..."
He couldn't say anymore, his throat clenched as he fought back tears.
"Look..." Marinette put her hand on his shoulder. "...I might not be able to sympathize with you, but I can at least be there for you...right?"
Chat smiled, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. "Of course, my lady..."
Suddenly Plagg came flying in, yelling fearfully as Abbie chased him out of the kitchen. "Did you raid the fridge again!?"
"Almost...!" Abbie grumbled. "I caught him this time."
"When are you going to stop thinking with your stomach, Plagg...?" Tikki sighed.
"Hey! You're one to talk!"
"Excuse me?" The two kwamis got up in each other's faces. "I don't go looking for food every chance I get!"
"You would, if you worked as hard as me!"
"Glutton!"
"Spoilsport!"
Stinky!"
"Annoying little bug!"
"Whoa!" Chat announced as Marinette pulled Tikki away, while his hands clapped over Plagg like a trap. "Whoa... And I thought Plagg and I were hostile!"
Tikki crossed her arms and looked away, while Plagg stuck his tongue out at her.
"Good luck and Bad Luck never mix." Marinette replied, stroking Tikki's head gently. "They're opposites."
"I see your point."
"It's like Sonic and Shadow, only smaller..." Abbie murmured.
Chat hadn't met Sonic yet, but from what he'd heard, he was a fun-loving hedgehog that had a hard time getting along with the more serious Shadow.
The doorbell rang, and Abbie went to answer it. "...Adrian, Marinette, there's seven people here to see you."
Chat got up, seeing the seven shapes stepping in. "The Chaos Emeralds...!"
"We didn't get a chance to introduce ourselves." The dark blue emerald explained. "I'm Denim, then this is Ruby, Frost, Sky, Violet, Sunny and Peridot."
"You did so much for us, back there." Peridot explained. "And when we heard you four needed help getting home, well..."
"We thought we'd return the favor." Sky finished. "We can teleport you all back to Paris, if you'd like."
Chat smiled, "You'd do that for us?"
"It's the least we could do." Ruby replied. "But let us warn you, time moves differently here than it does there."
"You mean we won't have been gone for three days when we get back?" Marinette asked.
"Correct." Sunny answered. "At the current rotations, you'll be arriving...eight days after you left."
"My parents must be worried sick!" Marinette whimpered. "And Warpster is probably still causing havoc back home!"
Chat nodded. "Paris needs us back...!"
"Then hold hands."
Chat saw Marinette blush, but she took his hand as the Chaos Emeralds circled around them. Tikki and Plagg clung to their respective partners, closing their eyes tightly.
The servers are the seven chaos... The emeralds recited. ...the power comes from the heart...the users are meant to unify the chaos...Chaos...Control!
Energy swirled around the two teenagers, and Chat held Marinette close as once again they fell into the portal vortex.
But this time, they clung tightly to each other, refusing to let go under any circumstance...
