Atatiana
Sitting down in this small cafe on the outskirts of town, I looked around at the people inside. They were all talking and chattering away about their busy lives.
Sat in front of the window I watched people pass by, hoping he'd walk in. I always come here every morning before work. It was almost like a ritual I did. Having a few cups of coffee always made me ready for the day to come, but he was what I really came here for.
He saw me sitting alone a few weeks ago and every time he came in I would notice. How could I not? He had stunning blue eyes that you could get lost in and his clipped jet black hair was always perfect. His smooth, shaven face was another aspect I loved as beards never attracted me. I always thought about how beards would get in the way and feel uncomfortable to feel.
Looking down at my watch, I saw it was 9:30am. I would have to leave in another 30 minutes and my heart rate quickened as the thought of not seeing him made my heart ache. I wasn't usually the girl who would hope to see a man every day. In fact, I was usually the opposite, not caring if the best looking man in the world was right next to me.
Turning around, I stared around the cafe to make sure I hadn't missed him somewhere. The brick walls had paintings hung on them on some shelves holding plant pots that were over grown. Metal chairs and small grey armchairs with round tables were full to the brim with people. People were looking in at the cakes in the display cabinet, asking themselves which one they should have.
Sandra – the person who owned the cafe – was busy behind the counter. She had memorised my order and always had it ready for me when I walked in. We weren't close, but she was the closet person to a friend that I had.
Come to think about it, my life was quite bland, simple and boring. Some people would be married and potentially having kids. They had exciting jobs and lives that they would tell anyone about if someone showed interest. But not me. My life was nothing like that. I wasn't married, I'm not even in a relationship, and I certainly have no exciting stories to tell people. It made me sad to think about how empty my life was and that all I did was wake up, go to work and come back to an empty home.
The bell on the door jingled and I turned my head around to see him sat beside me. He brought the excitement I was missing into my life. He was the one thing that made my life different from what it normally was before I met him. He never ordered anything or went up to the counter. He had a mysterious presence to him, which drew me into him even more.
"Are you going to keep staring at me or say something?" he chuckled.
My cheeks began to blush and I quickly looked down at the spotless white floor.
"I wasn't staring," I lied, "and for a moment I thought you weren't going to show up."
"Would you have been disappointed if I didn't?"
The truth was, I would have been, but obviously I wasn't going to let him know that, so I shook my head. He laughed and it lit of the room, making butterflies fly around in my stomach.
"I haven't seen you anywhere, but this cafe."
"Neither have I. You know more about me than I do about you." I asked, hoping he would tell me something about him.
"Maybe we should change that. What are you doing later on tonight?" he wondered and I laughed, finding it funny that he would think I had something planned later tonight, which I didn't.
"Absolutely nothing. My life isn't as exciting as you may think."
"Oh, I'm sure that's not true, but if you are doing nothing, then let's go somewhere. Maybe a date?"
I was shocked. He asked me out, after all this time he had finally asked me out. Nodding, I could feel a smile form on my face. A smile formed on his face too.
Looking down at my watch, it was 09:50am. I had time to grab another drink. Getting off my chair, I walked over to the counter and asked for a coffee. Sandra had already got me it ready. She always had a way of knowing when I was about to ask for another cup of coffee, before I had even asked for it.
"Something good must have happened. You're practically glowing." she said.
"I'm going on a date. Can you believe it?"
"It's about time. You two have been talking for weeks. Be careful though, you never know who to trust these days."
Smiling back at her, I turned around to see he was gone. His seat was empty and seemed to have left as soon as I got up. My smile slowly disappeared from my face and as I walked back to my chair, I saw a napkin with something scribbled on it.
Picking it up with my spare hand, it had the words, I'll text you the details. Make sure to wear something nice.- your mystery man.
Folding the napkin up, I placed it in my pocket and turned my volume up on my phone, hoping he would text. Even though I didn't know his name, I didn't want to. It felt dangerous and that was what I loved about it.
Leaving the cafe, I got into my car and began driving to work. I was ready for the day to come, and I couldn't be happier.
