A Breath of Fresh Air

Jimmy's Perspective-

Friday Night-

"Glad your folks let you stay over." Joel said, letting me into his house.

"Why do you want me to go to work with you?" I asked.

"Well, I don't work on the weekends, but...you'll see."

I tilted my head and Joel ushered me in, closing the door behind me.

"Here," He said, leading me into a guest room, "You can sleep here. And you might wanna go to bed in a couple of hours since we'll be waking up early."

"Why?"

"Because I wanna get out there before everyone else does."

I raised an eyebrow, but Joel waved me down.

"You'll see in the morning."

The Next Day-

"Wake up kid, I just made breakfast."

I groaned as I woke up.

"Huh?" I asked sleepily, confused at where I was.

Joel chuckled, "You're at my place, remember?"

"Oh yeah." I said, getting up.

I followed Joel out into the dining room where two plates of pancakes, eggs, and bacon sat.

"Wow! Thanks Joel!" I smiled, sitting down.

Joel smiled softly, "Course!"

I poured syrup over the pancakes and dug in.

"This is really good!" I said, shoving more into my mouth.

Joel chuckled, "I'm glad you like it! Made them the way Etho likes them."

"And how's that?"

Joel smiled, "With love."

I giggled and Joel ruffled my hair.

"Now hurry up and eat, we gotta get out there."

-

"You work here?" I asked, stepping out of Joel's car and following him to a row of boats.

"Yep." Joel said, smiling.

He walked over to a boat and pulled the cover off.

"Come on, I'm gonna teach you how to sail."

My eyes widened, "I'm sorry?"

Joel chuckled, grabbing some sails and stepping onto his boat.

"Etho taught me how to sail years ago and it's become my favorite thing to do."

I hoped on the boat with Joel and helped him rig up the sails.

"It's not too hard once you learn the basics." Joel said once we finished.

He then pushed the boat out into the water, and I saw that the words 'Boat Boys Forever' were written on the side.

"'Boat Boys'? What's that?" I asked and Joel smiled faintly.

"It's a nickname me and Etho have. I called him a Boat Boy once after he taught me how to sail and the name kind of stuck."

"Now come on." He said, clapping his hands, "Let's start."

-

It wasn't easy.

In fact, it was really difficult.

There were so many terms and tricks to learn, and I got lost several times.

Luckily, Joel didn't seem to get mad and would happily repeat things or help me remember them.

After a couple of hours, we ended up going back to shore.

I yawned as we took the sails off of the boat.

"So?" Joel asked as we stepped into his car, "Did you have fun?"

I shrugged, "Kind of. It was very confusing."

Joel chuckled as he backed out, "Yeah. I remember the first time Etho took me out on a boat. I thought I would never get the hang of it, but here I am."

"The world works in mysterious ways."

"Exactly." Joel smiled.

After a couple minutes of silent driving, Joel said,

"You know? I think I was right."

"Right about what?" I asked.

He smiled at me, "Right about how getting fresh air would help."

I shrugged, "I guess."

"Did you think of Tango at all while we were out there?"

I thought for a second and then shook my head.

"Exactly, getting outside and distracting yourself is going to help you get over him. It'll take time, but trust me, it'll help."

I nodded.

"When does your school get out?" He asked.

"Er- June 1st, so like in a month."

Joel nodded, "Well I'm going to check with your folks and see if you can stay over for the summer. I want to get you out on the boat every day."

My eyes widened, "Every day?!"

"Well, most days. Trust me kid, this is going to help you."

He then pulled up into a Wendy's drive-through and said, "Alright kid, what do you want?"
