Ever since the death of their brother, Luke and Beau have had to celebrate Christmas alone. The love in the house slowly dwindling, until one Christmas morn when everything fell into place...

The death of my brother was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Well, we don't really know if he died but we had a funeral for him... If that counts as dying. He's been 'dead' for three years now. Everyday my burning love for him slows, almost as if my heart is giving up.

I'm Luke by the way, Jai's twin brother. Mum has gotten over Jai, which pains me. Beau and I celebrate Christmas together, since mum is hardly ever home. She uses the extra money to get away from home, to travel the world. But this Christmas was different. This Christmas she stayed home. The fourth year without him.

"Oh cmon Beau!" I yelled, throwing a small stone at him.

He laughed and launched one at me, "You asked for it!"

We continued to throw stones at one another, until we heard a car pull into the drive. Both us of stopped instantly and ran up the hill to the front of the house. A small blue car sat on the drive, a very familiar car. I walked closer to it to get a better look, the shape of a woman sat in the drivers seat.

I backed up towards Beau, "It's mum."

His eyes lit up, "Wait really? You can't be serious."

"I hope I know what my mother's car looks like."

Beau ran up to the car right as the door was opening.

"Boys!" Our mother yelled.

"Mum, what brings you home for the holidays?" We both asked.

She sighed, "Well its been four years today so I decided to come home for this one."

Beau and I walked up the car to grab her bags, the proceeded to carry them to the house. We brought them to her room and the settled in the living room. I began to look around the room, reminiscing in the childhood memories when Jai was around.

"Luke you always get the best gifts!" Jai half yelled.

I smirked, "But the gift I give you is the best."

"You're right." He answered

"Jai what have you done! You ruin everything!" I screamed at him.

His gaze shot downward, "It was an accident."

"Oh yeah, running around the china cabinet while shooting Nerf guns. You broke Mum's favorite plate." I retorted.

"I said I'm sorry! Mum said it was fine, just let go if it!" Jai yelled back.

I took a step back, Jai never yelled, "Yeah well maybe you should just leave then."

He frowned, "Maybe I will."

Then he stormed into our room and within seconds came back with a backpack.

"Merry Christmas. I hope you got what you wanted."

That was the last we saw of him. My last memory of him was when I yelled at him. Mum forgot, Beau remembers but never talks about it. Everything is always my fault. Jai never ruined anything, I always blamed it on him.

"Okay boys. I brought you gifts!" Mum's voice rang through the house as she walked to wear Beau and I were.

"I'm sorry about the wrap job, I was in a rush."

Beau was first to speak, "No worries Mum, thanks for coming home."

I added on, "Yeah, thanks for this. Beau and I really missed family holidays."

Tears formed in her eyes, "Well I needed to see my little boys' faces as they opened their gifts."

I took the box of presents and began to sort through them. Giving the gifts to the respected person. When all the gifts were passed out, even the ones Beau and I bought, there was one left in the bottom of the box.

I carefully took the small box out and dropped the larger box to the floor. Beau became curious and took it from me.

"Well Beau, what is it." Mum questioned.

He cleared his that before handing me the box, "We'll save it for last yeah?"

I nodded and placed it next to my pile. Mum then pulled out her phone, snapping some pics of us smiling and a bunch of other cheesy things. We then began to open our presents. Beau and I got things from Mum's travels, pretty cool things as well. As for Mum, Beau and I pooled money together to buy her a really fancy necklace.

"Thank you boys. I love it so much, its very beautiful."

We smiled and I grabbed the small box. Beau looked at me and I gave a subtle nod.

"So mum, to answer your question. It's from Jai."

Her jaw dropped and her hand covered her mouth.

"Its for me." I added.

I carefully tore the paper off to reveal a small red box. I opened it only to reveal a note.

Clearing my throat I read it aloud, "Dear Luke, By the time you are reading this it must be Christmas. I hope mum is home by now, she should have realized you two need a family Christmas. This may have come as a surprise to you but I gave this to Beau before I left. Well not exactly, I left it on my bed but I guess you never saw. Sorry its really hard to write past tense, because I don't know what will happen exactly. But what I do know is that you are blaming yourself for whatever happened between us. Don't. I left and that's all that matters. Merry Christmas, I hope you got everything you wanted. Love, Jai."

By this time mum was crying uncontrollably. I had so much guilt, I almost cried. Beau was nodding the whole time. The evening was like a normal Christmas. We watched Christmas movies and played video games.

Our fun was cut short when we heard a knock on the door and someone singing. Mum ran to the window and Beau had to run to catch her before she fell.

"Mum what is it?" Beau questioned.

Tears fell down her cheeks but she managed to find her words, "He's home."

I ran to the door and yanked it open, what I saw left me speechless. There on the path to the house stood Jai, all dressed up, a santa hat sat atop his head.

"Merry Christmas." He choked out.

I ran outside and engulfed him in a hug. His arms wrapped around me and his head rest on my shoulder.

"Merry Christmas to you too."

Finally, after three years of waiting, my brother came home.
