As Young as We Are Now

When you're young you do some stupid things. But one boy knows that those things won't get you far in life.

------------------------------------------

Everyone told me that what I did as a teenager wouldn't effect me. But I knew it would. My brother Luke is a living example of that. When we were teenagers he did all kinds of things. He smoked weed, drank consistently, and had sex whenever he could. It seems like nothing, but where it got him is what hurts me the most.

Its been ten years since I admitted him into the mental hospital. All the shit he did caused damage in his brain, causing him to go crazy. While he was there I settled down and found a beautiful girl to marry. Right now I'm taking my son to go see Luke.

"So Luke, are you ready to go see your uncle?" I asked him, nervous about his reply.

The small boy nodded, "Why do we have to drive so far?"

I sighed, "You're too young to understand. He has the same name as you, did mommy ever tell you?"

"I think so..."

I smiled and reached back, ruffling his hair, "He was a good guy."

The rest of the ride was silent besides Luke's soft humming. I recalled a time when I was 10 and Beau would teach Luke and I new songs, we would end up humming them for hours before our mum told us to stop. With the asylum drawing nearer I sat more upright in my seat.

"Alright Luke, gather you things into your bag. We are almost there." I informed him.

I could hear him fumbling around before his soft voice spoke up, "What about the box next to you?"

I sighed, "Its just a gift from me to him. Don't worry about it. Did you bring anything for him?"

"Yeah, but you will have to wait and see."

I smiled, he is just like Luke was. Pulling into the lot my smile quickly faded. I hadn't visited in awhile so this was not going to fun for the first ten minutes. Jumping out of the car I walked over to the back door and picked Luke out of his car seat. Handing him his backpack I closed the door and walked over to the passengers seat, pulling out the box.

I looked down at my son, "Ready?"

-----

We walked inside and Luke's eyes instantly widened. The place looked much nicer since I'd last been here. New flooring, new desk, new everything.

"Luke sit down and I'll go check us in."

He did as I told him and I walked over to the desk.

"Two to see Luke Brooks."

The lady looked up at me and sighed, "I'll get you in five minutes. You're his brother right?"

I nodded, "Yeah. Thanks."

Walking back over to my son I noticed he was staring at my package. I sit down next to him and pat his head.

"Curious huh?"

"Little bit."

I laughed, "Don't worry. I am curious about what you brought."

He clutched his bag and I smiled even more. I pulled him onto my lap and he pushed into me. I kissed his head and soon enough the lady from the desk came over. We exchanged looks and I put Luke on the floor and stood up. Grabbing my package, Luke put his hand in mine. "Ready?" She asked us.

"Ready as I'll ever be."

The three of us walked through the lobby to a set of elevators.

"This is as far as I can take you. Someone will be waiting for you at the fourth floor."

"Thanks." I stated before pulling my son in with me.

I pressed the "4" button and watched as the doors closed us in. There was no turning back now. I looked down at Luke and noticed he was tapping his foot lightly. The elevator stopped and the doors opened, revealing a smiling lady with blonde hair.

"You must be Jai." She kneeled down and looked at Luke, "And you are?"

He looked up at me and I nodded, "I'm Luke."

"Well follow me and you'll see your uncle in no time."

She stood up and whispered into my ear, "Your brother is pretty happy you're coming. Are you sure you want your son to come?"

I nodded, "Okay Luke you ready?"

The lady led us throw the hall to a door in the middle labeled "Brooks L". She unlocked the door and motioned for us to go in. I figured it would be better if I called out to him like old times, so thats what I did.

"Luke! Where are you?"

I heard shuffling from somewhere and I figure stepped out. He looked almost the same as last time I saw him. The spot on his nose almost seemed more visible. His facial features were almost more chiseled, sort of the way mine are now.

"Hey." He finally said.

"Hi, how are you?" I questioned.

"Besides still being here, great, wonderful, couldn't be better." His sarcasm noticeable.

I looked down at my son and beckoned for him to say something. So he stuck out his hand and my brother shook it and knelt down.

"You must be Jai's son. Whats your name?"

"Luke. My daddy said that I was named after you."

He laughed, "Well it seems that you are. You look just like your father."

Standing back up he took my hand and led us to a table. Sitting down I put Luke into a seat next to me. Placing my box on the table I pushed it towards him.

"I thought I'd bring you something. The little one brought you something as well."

Luke smiled and looked lovingly at my son, "Well, do you want to give it to me first? Or daddy go first?"

"Ummm, one second." He then reached into his bag and pulled out a smaller bag.

He placed it onto the table then proceeded to close his bag. Looking back up he pushed the small bag towards Luke. Luke then opened it carefully and pulled out its contents. He put a small wind up robot on the table and a photo on the table.

He studied the photo and looked at me, "Your wife?"

I nodded, "Sadly she passed two years ago."

"How old was he?"

"Five."

He nodded and looked down at Luke, "Thank you so much."

My son smiled, "Your welcome."

I pushed my box towards him, "Its nothing. But I figured you'd want it."

While he unwrapped it I quickly pulled one of my old beanies out of my pocket and over my head. He lifted the lid off the box and I watched as his eyes widened.

"Where did you find these?" He asked.

I scratched my now covered head, "Well mum found them and told me to throw them out. But I couldn't bring myself to do so. I hope you don't mind but I kept one of them."

"No worries. I just cant get over the fact that she wanted to throw them out."

I shrugged, "I guess she didn't want to be reminded."

He sighed, "You know, in the ten years I've been here she hasn't visited once. Beau comes every so often, but I understand his job is demanding. But she cant bother to see her son just once?"

I stood up and walked behind him and grabbed a beanie out of his hand. Carefully I pulled it over his head and sat back down.

"Luke and I have to go, he's got a doctors appointment in an hour." I stated.

My brother nodded, "I understand."

We all stood up and he walked us to the door, almost as if it was his house. I guess in a way it has been for ten years.

"Well thanks for stopping by." He knelt down once again, "And it was a pleasure to meet you Luke."

My son smiled and gave Luke a big hug, "I love you."

Luke was stunned, "I love you too."

He then stood up and I pulled him into a hug, "I promise it wont be such a big gap in-between visits next time."

He smiled, "Bring the boy next time too. He's a ray of sunshine. Don't let him do what I did."

"Never in a million years." I promised.

I opened the door and stepped outside.

"Until next time?" He cocked his head.

"Until next time."

With the the door closed and the lady locked the door. She led us back to the elevator and we walked out to the car.

For once in my many visits to this place, I finally thought my brother was finally back.
