After Dinner

We shared dessert

and the dinner ended

Lean bent down and whispered

"Did it go as intended?"

She poured the last of the wine

into our glasses

then waltzed away humming

Young Lads and Lasses

I pulled out her chair

and we went to the door

"The bill?" She inquired

"I paid it before."

We strolled through the town

past the Smithy's and stables

past the saloon

with the chairs on the tables

"I didn't realize

it was getting so late."

"It's what happens when

you have fun on a date."

She blushed and her fingers

toyed with the locket

put his hand in his pocket

"Busy day tomorrow,

three shows are new.

Think you might come

if you have nuthin' to do?"

She smiled, with no answer.

But then he already knew

Time to fish or cut bait

before the evening was through

He touched her arm

and spoke her name

but before he continued

he saw the flame

In the church was a raging fire

With no fire department

the situation was dire

With one last helpless look

he muttered, "Good night."

then grabbed a bucket and joined in the fight.
