Chapter 6 - Unwanted Arrivals
The rest of the afternoon had mostly consisted of the order discussing what they were going to do about the situation next. Or more accurately, arguing about what they were going to do next.
Eventually they gave up, deciding to sleep on it and discuss it all the next day, fresh and full of energy. Petra especially, wasn't being a ton of help, considering she could barely keep her eyes open.
It was raining hard outside, wind howling through the jungle and around their tree-house. Everybody were sleeping peacefully through the growing storm, if woken up by the thunder every now and then.
Rascal was sound asleep on Petra's bed with her, his tail swishing slightly from side to side in his sleep. Petra was out cold beside him, her one arm wrapped around the wolf.
All of a sudden, Rascal's ears pricked in the dark and he lifted his head. His tail stopped wagging as he looked around the dark room.
A low growl sounded from deep in Rascal's throat, his fur raising slightly. He lowered his head, nudging Petra's cheek with his nose.
When Petra remained asleep, Rascal stood up on the bed, her arm slipping of him. He sniffed the air, growling again.
"Mmmph, Rascal?" Petra mumbled sleepily, her eyes opening slightly before closing again.
Rascal turned back to Petra, starting to lick her face to wake her up properly.
"No, boy." Petra pushed Rascal off, rolling over on the bed. "Go back to sleep."
Rascal pawed at her back again, before turning around. He jumped off the bed, his claws making clicking noises on the wooden floor. Running over to the window, Rascal leapt up on the window seat and pressed his snout through a gap in the curtains. A deep growl came from his throat as he leapt down from the window seat and ran back to the bed, leaping on.
Enthusiastically he began to lick Petra's face, trying to wake her up.
"Rascal, no." Petra mumbled sleepily. "It's the middle of the night for god's sake."
Rascal didn't care, he leapt down from the bed again only to jump back up after barely a few minutes. Petra groaned, rolling onto her back and looking up at Rascal with half-open eyes.
He yelped, looking over at the bedroom door and then at her again.
"Are you serious, Rascal?" Petra asked, yawning. "We have a doggy door for a reason. Go on your own!"
Rascal whined softly, pulling on Petra's pyjama top with his teeth. She sighed heavily, realising he wasn't about to let her have a good night's sleep.
"Rascal, what is up with you tonight?" Petra said, rubbing her eyes as she sat up on the bed. "I really need this rest, you know that right?"
Rascal whined, jumping down from the bed again. Petra sighed, getting up as well. She watched as Rascal ran over to the window, leaping onto the window seat and pressing his nose through the curtains.
Yawning again, Petra walked over to Rascal and pulled open the curtains. Instead of the usual night-time zombie or creeper Petra expected to see, there was a much more startling sight.
Immediately Petra's mind woke up and she pulled away from the window – now knowing exactly why Rascal had woken her.
"Wake up!" Petra's voice bellowed down the hallway. "We have a problem outside, everybody wake up!"
Jesse jolted awake from the screams, getting out of bed so quickly she nearly got tangled in her blanket. She grasped the windowsill to keep her balance, her eyes landing out the jungle floor beneath them.
"What in the nether?" Jesse gasped, her eyes widening at the mobs of monsters beneath her bedroom window. Zombies, Skeletons, creepers and spiders were crowding the woodland floor like a living carpet.
"What's going on?" Lukas asked as everybody bolted out of their rooms.
His question was soon answered by a loud banging noise, like fists on wood. Everybody's heads snapped towards the door.
"Look out of the window and you'll know!" Petra said as Rascal protectively circled around her, his ears pulled back.
Immediately Axel, Olivia and Lukas darted to the window, while Jesse walked up to Petra.
"What could have caused this?" She asked with wide eyes.
"I'll bet Miss Butter's life that it has something to do with the command black." Petra said, her eyebrows furrowing. "I just don't know what..."
A loud snap of thunder interrupted her voice, Rascal yelping and pulling his tail in between his legs.
"The rain!" Lukas gasped, raising his hands and grasping strands of his blonde hair. "They must have left the cave after me and Petra, and the rain stopped them from burning!"
"How smart are these things?" Axel asked with wide eyes.
"Smarter than the average, that's for sure." Olivia replied, pressing her face up against the window as she peered down at the endless crowds of monsters.
There was another loud thud against the front door, causing Lukas's ocelot to scurry in beneath one of the couches.
"They're going to break down the door." Jesse said anxiously, darting into the living room. She ripped open one of the curtains, craning her neck to see the front door. Sure enough, their entire front porch was swamped with zombies, about five of them clawing at the wooden oak door.
"I told you guys the staircase was a safety risk! If we had a ladder, this wouldn't be a problem!" Olivia said, throwing her hands in the air.
"Oh yeah, because a ladder is so much more practical to get things up and down." Petra snapped back. "What about Rascal, huh? You want me to carry him up and down that thing every day?"
"Jesse used to carry Reuben up and down!" Axel chipped in.
"Now is not the time, guys!" Jesse said as she pulled the curtains closed. "If we don't do something, those zombies will break down that door."
"It'll be suicide to go out into the horde." Lukas pointed out. "Especially if they're as strong as the ones Petra and I dealt with today."
"Oh don't be a wimp, it wasn't that bad!" Petra snapped over at Lukas.
"Not that bad? Hello!?" Lukas threw his hands up in exasperation.
"Uh, guys, maybe not now?" Axel spoke up, peering out of the window again anxiously.
"Well we have to do something right now!" Petra argued.
"Okay, shut up!" Jesse stepped right in between the others, holding up her hands. "Everybody just take a deep breath and stop fighting, already! We're not going to get anywhere at this rate."
Lukas just awkwardly scratched the back of his head, while Petra had her arms crossed and her foot tapping the wooden floor. Olivia just looked like she'd rather be anywhere but there at that moment, while Axel has just turned his back again to stare out of the window.
Jesse took a deep breath, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Olivia. You're the biggest redstone expert among us, do you have any idea what our next move could be?"
"Uh..." Olivia began stressfully rubbing her temples. "The command block would stop at a certain capacity, and not start spawning them again unless the mobs are removed from its radar or it malfunctioned."
"How is that supposed to help us?" Petra asked, earning a 'shush' from Jesse.
"More mobs wouldn't have spawned in the cave until these were a bit away." Olivia explained. "Meaning the newly spawned mobs back at the command block wouldn't know to just follow the slip stream with the ones that are coming after us."
"So what you're saying is, if we wipe these out...?" Jesse began slowly.
"Theoretically, yes." Olivia confirmed. "But I can't see how the five of us couldn't possibly accomplish that."
"Could we wait it out till morning?" Axel suggested. "It's like 3 AM already."
"Not if it continues to rain." Lukas pointed out thoughtfully. "After all, I doubt we could wait much longer, or-" his voice was cut off by another loud bang against their front door.
"We fought hoards of mobs before, not to even mention the freaky things the admin has concocted." Jesse spoke up. "We're the Order of the Stone – we can do this."
"Jesse are you certain?" Olivia asked anxiously.
"She's right." Petra said, crossing her arms again. "These guys are tough, but they're no match for us. Not now that we know what we're dealing with."
A smile slunk onto Jesse's face, determination brewing in her brown eyes. "Armour up, guys."
Nobody needed telling twice, all of them immediately heading in the direction of their upstairs armoury. No matter how bizarre or crazy a situation was, no matter how easily circumstances could stop somebody dead in their tracks – Jesse had a way of boosting others' confidence with only a few words.
"When you're fighting these guys, go for the head or throat." Petra said, fastening her chest plate. "And hold onto your weapon – they can very easily disarm you."
The others nodded, some looking anxious as they took in the redhead's advice.
Olivia reached for her bow, but then hesitated. "Guys?" She asked, turning to the others. Everybody lifted their heads to meet the engineer's gaze.
Olivia bit her lip slightly. "What about Jesse?"
"I can't be affected, can I?" Jesse asked. "The command block is miles from here."
"The mobs were still created by the command block." Olivia pointed out slightly. "What if you're more vulnerable to them than the rest of us?"
"I think if Jesse was in any danger because of their presence, we'd know it already." Petra pointed out. "She looks fine to me."
"It's still just a big gamble." Lukas pointed out, pulling on his boots. "A hit from one of these monsters might just..."
"I've got my armour on." Jesse pointed out. "The only places that I'm really at risk for injury, is my head and neck. I'm sure I'll be fine."
"Keep close to the house, okay?" Olivia said. "The more experienced fighters like Petra and Axel can take the mobs that are furthest away. If anything happens, you need to only have to take a few strides into safety."
Jesse took a deep breath and nodded. As leader, it was hard for her to stand down and watch her friends take the riskier fields. But she also wasn't stupid.
Everybody swiftly finished armouring up, equipping their weapons. Jesse was still amazed at how light her new armour was on her, fitting even more comfortably than the Star Shield – and that was a set she was comfortable enough to sleep in on occasions.
As Jesse picked up her Nether Star sword, she carefully removed the tiny gem from it's helm, inserting it into a matching slot in her belt. She smiled to herself, knowing that the enchantments bound her to her sword with the gem. If she lost it, she could summon it back to her hand with a mere flick of her wrist – just like Soren used to.
"Be careful, everybody." Lukas said, exchanging glances with the others.
"You too, man." Axel said, giving Lukas a rather rough pat on the back.
"I have one concern to raise." Jesse spoke up, causing everybody to turn in her direction. "The front porch is currently swamped by a zombie hoard. How will we-'
Her voice was unexpectedly cut off by a sickening crack, the sound of wood splintering beneath a heavy impact.
"I think that answers your question." Petra said, raising Miss Butter. "Let's do this thing."
The five of them ran down to the lower level of the treehouse, with Rascal taking the lead. The wooden door hung off it's hinges, the mobs of zombies beginning to move into their living room. Lukas's ocelot was perched on one of the highest bookcases, hissing.
Olivia was the first to raise her bow, an arrow soaring through the air split seconds later. Piercing the skull of the one the zombies, causing it to fall down with a dying moan.
The others all charged forward, weapons raised. Blood staining the tree-house's fine wooden floor within seconds as the intruding zombies were all swiftly ended.
Unlike the on-hand iron weapons they had carried on them first time around, the Order's enchanted weapons made quick work of every mob that had gotten into their home. Even Rascal played his part, his sharp fangs ripping apart the creatures' rotten flesh.
"How many would you say are outside?" Jesse asked as Axel promptly decapitated the last zombie with his axe. They all bundled out onto the porch, eyes scanning the mob invested jungle.
"More than a hundred." Petra replied matter-of-factly, narrowing her blue eyes. "I'd say below two-hundred though, not counting that there may be some into the jungle."
"That's not too bad, is it?" Axel asked.
"No, it isn't." Jesse said firmly, twisting the the Nether star blade in her hand. "Let's show these creatures that they chose to mess with the wrong group of friends."
___
Hi, yeah, I'm not actually dead even though this was updated like 10 days ago. I promptly forgot to mention that I was going on holiday and wifi was a bit tricky- but I'm back now!
I'll try and give ya'll the next few chapters a bit quicker to make up for it lol.
Fun fact about this chapter - this fight the Order's about to walk into, was originally the grand final battle of Night of the Mobs! Yeah, the story would originally have ended here and then there would have been a third book. It didn't end on chapter 6 though, there was a lot more story before this point that I cut out, because it became irrelevant to the plot when I combined Night of the Mobs and the third book.
Anyways, back to the chapter! How do you guys think this will play out?
