Chapter Six - Can't or Won't

Hi none-exictant reader!

-------------------------

It was the end of the day and Astoria was out on the quidditch pitch thinking about how she would never get the chance to play. It was a rather depressing thought, but she really didn't have much to live for if her sister wrapped her in bubble wrap and refused to let her do anything that might speed up the blood curses effect. Of course, she appreciated her sisters concern, but she would much rather a sister that listened instead of protected. Astoria had occasionally thought of just ending her pain and stopping her sister from worrying so much.

She never acted on those thoughts knowing there would be plenty of people missing her and that some might say she was just overreacting. She liked flying because it helped her clear her mind, but she had to fly very slow in order to not harm herself. She thought it was a rather sad existence, living through torturous nightmares just to die soon after her school life ended. She still had a life and she - more than anything - wanted to live it her way.

She hopped onto her Nimbus two-thousand and kicked of the ground floating into the sky. It was a gift from a relative who knew she'd always wanted to experience the adrenaline of soring through the clouds. Her sister didn't like that Astoria was gifted with the broomstick but didn't ask her to return it. Daphne wasn't much of an athlete but had always enjoyed watching quidditch nonetheless.

Astoria flew into the clouds and glided around the stands just clearing her mind from the terrible thoughts that plagued her mind everyday. She hadn't noticed that someone else was on the pitch and would come to thank Merlin for him being there. Because when he saw how skilled the sixth year girl was on a broom he got an idea. She flew around and eventually noticed the presence of the second person.

She was always very embarrassed when she was caught on broom because she knew they'd suggest joining the quidditch team and she'd have to make an excuse. The other student was a Slytherin she didn't recognise and guessed he was younger than her. He dashed off and she hoped that he wouldn't say anything about her being on her broom. Astoria's nerves caused her to get off her broom and went back inside to go back to her common room.

When she arrived she was bombarded be an excited Blaise Zabini and angry Daphne Greengrass. The Slytherin from earlier left and Astoria guessed what had happened and knew Daphne would yell at her.

"Is it true?" Blaise asked, "Can you fly?"

"No," Daphne cut in, "she cannot."

"What are you talking about?" A fourth year interjected, "I've seen her on a broom and she's brilliant."

"Please join the team?" Blaise begged.

"I can't -"

"Can't or won't?" Theodore interrupted Astoria, "Because there's an open spot and you don't have any excused we can't poke holes in."

"She won't join -"

"This is a matter of if she wants to join," Blaise cut Daphne off. "Do you?"

"Um..." Astoria bit her lip worried but excited at the opportunity. "I'll think about it."

"Thank you."

Blaise hugged Astoria and Daphne looked at me disapproval painted on her face with worry clouding her gaze as she knew the young girl might not be able to resist. She wanted to consult someone who might understand but that wouldn't tell her off for saying maybe. All the Slytherins would say yes because they wanted a chance to win and she really only had two friends outside of Slytherin. She decided to ask the first one that she found.

Hermione and Ron were having a conversation about school and how difficult or easy classes were while Harry talked to Neville and Ginny. Ginny and Neville were both quite curious about what Hannah had wanted and when they asked Harry he suddenly became very interested in the why the school was named Hogwarts. Of course none of the three Gryffindors knew the answer to that.

"They wanted an interesting name?" Neville suggested.

"Harry," Ginny started, "don't avoid the question. What did Hannah ask about when she talked to you during lunch?"

"Homework," Harry replied. The other two didn't buy it.

They kept harassing Harry until dinner was over and they left. It wasn't quite curfew yet and Ginny didn't really want to wait around in the common room. She eventually bumped into Astoria and walked up to the younger girl. Astoria was shocked when someone tapped on her shoulder but seemed relieved that it was Ginny.

The two girls walked through the corridors talking about the day they had just faced and Astoria mentioned Blaise asking her to join the quidditch team. Ginny was stunned that Astoria could ride a broom when she knew the Slytherin never went to flying class. Astoria asked for advice about whether to accept the offer. Ginny was torn; she wanted her friend to be happy but if she really was good Harry might have trouble beating her.

"What do you wanna do?" The red head asked.

"I don't know," Astoria admitted, "I've always wanted to join, but I also don't want to because I don't know if I would help much."

"It sounds like you've already made up your mind."

Astoria knew she had and Ginny noticed the joy Astoria experienced when thinking of joining the quidditch team. Astoria looked at the red head beside her and Ginny smiled at the brunette looking for an answer. Astoria bit her lip thinking of the consequences playing quidditch would bring and how worried her sister would be. Another, much larger part of her wanted her to join and live the lie she wanted to live.

"Join," Ginny whispered to the Slytherin.

Astoria nodded her head knowing she regret it but deciding it was her life and that she wouldn't let a stupid blood curse stop her. Ginny liked that the girl beside her was smiling since she knew it must've been a tough decision. The red head couldn't stop herself before kissing the brunetted on the cheek and saying goodnight. Astoria burnt up and turned redder than Ginny's tie and knew she had somehow let herself fall for the nice Gryffindor.

Ginny left and went back to her common room because she was tired and it was almost curfew. She ignored all the questions about where she had been and walked up to her dorm. She had to process why she kissed the girl on the cheek. She had never liked girls before and never showed any signs of liking them. But, when she was around Astoria she felt an urge to just kiss the girl and questioned herself for it. Guess I'm bisexual?
