Chapter 6
"Absolutely not."
He frowned. "What do you mean? You are hungry, right?"
"Yeah but, I'm not about to kill someone just to eat." I countered.
"Then what do you suggest? It's not like you can eat anything else. You won't even have to kill anyone. If you're careful, you can take blood and leave them unconscious."
I shook my head. "I will not kill or hurt another human being."
"You aren't human."
I clenched my fists. "I never said i was a vampire. I don't even know if i can trust you. You're a complete stranger."
He crossed his arms. "Okay then. Fine. What do you want to know?"
I looked him up and down. "It won't make a difference. There is such a thing as lying to gain one's trust."
He gave an exasperated sigh. "You're ridiculous. I wouldn't lie. I have no reason to."
I grunted. "Fine. How old are you?"
"Sixteen."
"Name."
"I told you-"
"Name." I said more harshly.
He sighed. "Jasper Reeds."
"What school do you go to?"
"I don't go to school. I used to but, then i quit."
I pursed my lips. I still didn't want to trust him. "How do you find your 'prey'?"
He shrugged. "It depends on the vampire. Me personally, I use my mind control to lure them to me."
"Do you kill them?"
He shook his head. "No. There are some vampires that kill their prey for the fun of it but, i think it's cruel and unfair to them."
I was silent as i stared at him in thought. He groaned in annoyance. "If you don't want to do it i can't force you but, at least watch me so you know how." He said as he grabbed my arm and pulled me with him.
I frowned but, decided, as long as i didn't hurt anyone, it was okay. I followed him away from the building and down the same dark alley i had been attacked in.
Jasper seemed to notice my curious eyes and said, "Most vampires like to find food close to home so they don't anger other vampires by being in their territory. It's polite."
I nodded in understanding.
He put a hand to my chest, without turning to look at me, to slow me down. He peeked around the corner and glanced around. I looked over his shoulder.
His eyes scanned the area and rested on a younger looking guy. He looked to be about twenty or so. Jasper looked like he was concentrating really hard as he stared at the guy.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
He waved a hand to silence me. I huffed and leaned back against the wall, crossing my arms in annoyance.
Out of the corner of my eye i saw him smile. Then the guy he had been watching walked right down the alley. After he got far enough in the shadows he stopped and looked around. He seemed confused as to how he got where he was and i realized Jasper must have used his mind control.
Jasper moved towards him silently. The guy turned around just as Jasper got right behind him and raised an eyebrow when he saw him. "Who-"
His voice was cut off as Jasper placed a hand on his neck and the guy dropped to the ground.
I rushed forward and nelt down next to the guy. "What did you do?!" I hissed, checking his pulse.
Jasper scoffed. "He's just sleeping. I made him fall asleep so he wouldn't freak out."
I had finished checking him and found what he said was true. "Okay? Now what?"
He shrugged. "Now, i usually drink as much blood as i need and leave them here to wake up. That's all."
I stood up and started walking away. "Hey! Wait!" He ran up to me and stood in front of me. "Where are you going?"
"You showed me and now I'm going home." I stated bluntly.
He rolled his eyes. "Yeah but, i thought that, after i showed you, you'd want to at least try it."
I shook my head. "I told you earlier that i wouldn't."
"Wow. You are going to die."
I glared at him.
"If you don't eat you're going to die and I'm going to say i told you so."
I walked right past him. He sighed and followed me. "Are you seriously going to just walk away?"
"Yes. Why?"
He was quiet as he walked behind me. When we got back to the end of the alley i stopped and turned to face him. "Well, are you going to tell me what ability i have?"
He shrugged. "If you want me to. It'll only take a few minutes."
I nodded. He grabbed my hand and bit down on my palm. I gasped and tried to yank my hand away. "What the hell?!"
He stepped on my foot to shut me up. A few seconds later he pulled away and licked the bit marks. He let go and i pulled my hand to my chest. "What was that for?" I growled, rubbing my, surprisingly, already healed palm.
"You're like me. You have the ability of the mind."
I frowned. "How do you know that?"
"By your blood. Vampires can tell the difference between the blood types."
I raised a eyebrow. "Really?"
He nodded. "Yeah. Most don't drink other vampire's blood but, it helps in situations like this."
I thought for a minute. "But, if i do then why couldn't i read people's minds?"
"Well, you can't read mine since we have the same power but, you probably haven't been able to read other's because you haven't tried."
I bit my lip. "So, will i have little voices in my head now that i know i can do it?"
"Nah. Even the best have to give a small amount of concentration to read minds. You won't be able to hear their thoughts unless you try."
I gave a small sigh of relief. He grinned. "So, now that you know, what are you going to do?"
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Well, are you going to try living like a human or are you going to be a vampire? You have to drink blood either way so i guess it doesn't really matter."
I looked down. "I do not want to drink blood. I will not hurt anyone no matter what and i finding repulsive that other people can."
Jasper frowned. "Like i said before, it doesn't hurt them and you don't have to kill them."
"Still..."
I didn't say anything for a while but, then looked at my watch. 2:00am. "I better get home. My parents don't know I'm out and they probably wouldn't be happy if the found out."
He nodded. "Okay. Guess I'll see you around. If you ever need anything just ask. I'll always be here and you can talk to me anytime."
"Thanks. Bye." I waved as i walked away.
I heard the wall to the building slide sideways and then it slide back and i knew he had gone inside. I made my way home and jumped up to my window, climbing inside before shutting and locking it.
I listened at my door to make sure i hadn't woken anyone up. Not a sound. I walked back to my bed and sat down. I was exhausted but, didn't really feel like sleeping.
I went over to my desk. I pulled out some of my homework and worked for about an hour before i sighed and put everything away. I layed back down and closed my eyes.
I don't really know if i dreamed or not... If i did it was probably all nightmares.
