Chapter 23

I paced the floor of my cell like a caged tiger, slamming my body against the bars every now in then as I cried out in rage. "Hey!" I shouted, tugging on the bars.

A few humans in nearby cages stared at me, shaking their heads. Obviously they didn't want any attention. I huffed and tried to see where the closest door was. It was to my left about twenty feet away. Knowing that didn't do me much good when I was locked up, but I was trying to think outside the box.

I turned to the human boy sitting to my right. "Do they patrol? Are there guard shifts?" I asked.

His eyes were wide when I spoke and he shuffled back. I realized my fangs had come out from my anger which was probably scary for him considering what he had obviously been through. I took a deep breath and hid them back behind my lips. "I need you to tell me if anyone ever comes around here." I said.

He frowned and dropped his eyes with a small shrug. Okay... Another question. "Is anyone ever released? Or taken and brought back?"

A second shrug of uncertainty. This wasn't helpful. They were probably erasing some memories to keep the humans from knowing the whole truth of their captivity. I sighed and turned away from the boy. He wasn't going to be any help.

I leaned on the bars as I tried to think of what to do. There was no way I could break the lock, I had already tried and been unsuccessful. I wasn't sure how long I'd already been here, but it was long enough to suspect there weren't any guards on regular duty. They probably didn't think it was necessary to guard humans. If I couldn't break the locks, they certainly wouldn't be able to. That didn't leave me many options.

Sighing, I dropped to the ground to wait. I frowned as I thought back to the man who'd grabbed me. He had been smiling like it was a game when he caught me, but his eyes had been so cold. I almost shivered just thinking about them.

He looked familiar too, like I'd seen him somewhere before. It was strange, I knew I'd never met him before, but something about him made me feel sick. He looked like an old enemy, I just couldn't place my finger on who. It might've just been my imagination. I decided that was the best excuse and put the thought out of my mind.

My wait wasn't as long as I expected and soon a someone in a hood came to fetch me. They opened the door to my cell and waved a hand at me. With hesitation, but no other options, I stepped out of the cage and began following him through the door on the right.

Soon we came to a smaller room than the one before. A vertical table sat in the corner and a few sanitized counters were against one wall. The rest of the room was empty, save for the two chairs sitting alone in the center of the floor. The guard shoved me towards them. With little choice, I sat down, crossing my arms with defiance.

"Lunas will be here soon." The guard told me before leaving.

Lunas... An unfamiliar name to me. I wondered if it was that guy. My suspicions turned out to be true when the door opened a short time later and the cloaked man stepped into the room. His entire aura read of dominance and power. It wasn't hard to guess he was used to having control. That was an unhealthy way to live if you asked me. Way too much arrogance.

I narrowed my eyes and lifted my chin. "Who're you?" I asked.

He grinned, a savage slice. "Lunas, the head of this congregation." He said.

I raised an eyebrow. "This is no church." I said. "More of a cult by he looks of it."

He shrugged. "Call us what you will. We are merely a community. But details are very overrated. Let's not stray from the topic at hand."

I watched him closely as he walked around behind me and started filling glasses with blood. "I would like to do this as civilized people." He held out one of the glasses for me to take. "One vampire to another, yes?"

I scanned his expression for deception, but it was all to fake for me read. My eyes dropped too the glass of blood and I took it. He seemed pleased and pulled up the other chair to sit across from me. Once he was settled, he said, "You appear to be a straightforward sort of person so I'll get straight to the point." He peered at me. "What do you know about changing a human into a vampire?"

I had expected that question and snorted, scanning the floor. "There's nothing to be known. It's impossible." I said.

"Come now, Jasper. Let's not play games." Lunas urged. "Tell me what you know and maybe I'll let you see Vladimir." I raised my eyes. Lunas was smiling at me and swirling the blood in his glass. "That is why you followed me here, isn't it? You're obviously smart enough to know he was here so don't feign ignorance."

I sighed heavily and set my glass of blood on the floor. "Are you threatening Vlad's life?" I asked.

"No, of course not. I would never risk Vladimir's life, he is very important to our cause." Lunas paused. "Your life however... not so much."

I crossed my arms. "What does he have to do with your 'cause'?"

"World domination." Lunas responded instantly, looking excited just saying the words. "Old fashion, I know, but it's an honest aspiration. Vladimir is a God send. He will bring about the end of human reign and so will begin the darkness that vampires shall rule."

Rule. Is that how he saw it? The world would be in chaos. There would be no order to anything. Vampires were bred for stealth and power. We were not meant to stand above the rest. He was insane if he thought this would ever work.

I laughed despite myself. "That's what this is all about? Some sort of power play?" I stood up and glared down at him. "Humans are stronger than you think. They won't go down that easily."

"Neither will you, apparently." Lunas was growing agitated. He stood up as well and went to put his glass down with less gentleness than before. "If you refuse to tell me, I'll beat it out of you."

"You won't make me talk." I said.

He scoffed. "That's was obvious from the moment I entered the room." He went to the door. "Fortunately, you won't be the one talking."
