Chapter 8 The New Magic
A few days later, Hannah and her friends were in the cafeteria having lunch; however, the silence was very awkward as they all were worried about when Daniel would finally say something to his parents.
"Okay this silence is killing me so I'm going to say something right now! Hannah has your brother cracked yet?" Josh asked not to be able to stand the silence any longer.
Hannah, initially taken aback by the sudden question, didn't mind answering as the silence was eating away at her like a colony of red ants.
"Well he hasn't said anything yet, but he did try this morning but it was like his words got mixed up and he said something about school today instead," Hannah explained.
"Oh right... I forgot to tell you all about that," Iris said.
"Forgot to tell us what Iris?" Jane asked.
"Well there's a spell that the amulets cast whenever someone outside of the Rainbow Squads finds out about who they are. It's a safety precaution that's put in whenever the identities of the Rainbow Squads have to be kept a secret," Iris explained.
"Wait so Daniel is now incapable of telling anyone?" Erick asked.
"Unless he has permission from everyone, yes he can't say a word," Iris explained.
"... I feel like we should tell him that," Jake said.
"Yeah we should or else he might end up embarrassing himself," Hannah said concerned for her brother.
"We should and um... we might need to stay here a little after school. Apollo wanted me to get him something from the library here," Iris explained.
"Um, what does he need from the library because I can help?" Ed asked.
"Well I'll explain later when we're somewhere more private," Iris stated as she felt like they were talking too much about magic in the large crowd of the other students in school. The other squads all looked at each other before looking back to Iris and nodding their heads in agreement.
Later after school, the Squads were at the lockers, with Josh groaning out of frustration. "UGGGGHH! I swear science gets harder and harder by the day! UGHTHPFHE! I really hate physics," Josh cried out as his brain collapsed in on itself.
"Hehe we'll be grateful we have Ed to help us out when we get stuck," Lila remarked.
"Yeah, he's also a great friend to hang out with," Josh said, both agreeing with his sister and reminding her that they also like to hang out with Ed for fun.
"Hey Josh, how'd you do on the physics test?" the two heard Jake ask.
"Ugh! I got a 63 on it! I swear I hate it so much! I can't understand crap!" Josh exclaimed, frustrated with the subject.
"Well it's better than what you got last year and you don't need to retake it so it's better then nothing," Jake said, trying to help Josh feel better.
"Thanks but still I wish it was easier to understand and wasn't so hard!" Josh explained.
"Hey guys whats up?" Erick asked.
"Josh is complaining about the physics test we took," Jake explained.
"Ah I understand how you feel Josh. I hate that subject too," Erick said.
"Good to know, thanks man," Josh said while leaning his head on his locker and holding his fist out.
Erick smiled before fist bumping Josh, who smiled at that feeling a lot better now.
"Hey everyone!" the four heard Iris exclaim happily. They looked over to their right and saw Iris with the rest of their team and Daniel. They looked at Daniel and saw he had a disappointed look on his face, which made them believe that he was told about the spell.
"Hey Dan you good man?" Erick asked.
"Not really, Iris here told me about a spell that's keeping me hush hush about this," Daniel explains.
"Ah figured that was the case she told us about it as well, sorry about that," Jake said.
Daniel looked down, upset that he was unable to tell his parents anything about what's going on.
"Well you better get home Daniel we're going to stay late, as Apollo asked me to get something from the school," Iris explained.
"Oh no no no! I'm staying with you all! If I can tell Mom and Dad about this then I'll be here to make sure you all don't get hurt!" Daniel declared.
"WHAT?! Hannah, are you okay with this?!" Josh asked, surprised and worried.
"I cant talk him out of this, when Daniel makes up his mind on something nothing can make him stop, especially when it comes to me," Hannah explained while looking down.
"UGh!" Josh groaned frustrated.
"Well you don't need to worry Daniel, we'll just be getting something from the library then we'll be on our way," Iris explained.
"Um Iris I need to tell you this but we're not allowed to take books from the library home, they are school property after all," Ed explained.
"Oh no, that's the new one, the old one," Iris said, confusing everyone.
"Old one? But Iris what old library? As far as I'm aware this school only has one library and not an older one," Jane explained.
"Yeah Jane spends a lot of time reading during free period, whether it's for studying or her just reading for fun," Lila explained.
"Well I'll show you all what I'm talking about," Iris said.
Everyone was confused but decided to see what Iris was talking about as they were curious to see where she was taking them. So once some of the other students left the school they all went to the library. There were some other students there studying but it was only about two or three so the group didn't have anything to worry about. So Iris led them to the back of the Library that most students and teachers didn't enter as the books back there weren't related to the subjects that were taught in the modern days. They all wandered in the very dark and dusty part of the library as barely anyone bothered coming back there to care for the place.
Josh had to cover his nose and mouth with his hoodie to avoid going into an asthma attack.
Iris soon led them to the very back part of the library that led to a dead end, much to everyone's confusion.
"Um Iris what is this? I'm confused about what Apollo wants from here," Josh explained through his hoodie that made him sound a bit muffled.
"I'll show you all in just a moment," Iris said before raising her hand.
A white circle with a symbol that was in the shape of a key then appeared in front of Iris. After a while a key hole appeared in front of the wall; everyone heard a click before Iris put her hand down. The wall transformed into an old door that had gold around the frame of the door. The Squads and Daniel all stood there with their jaws practically hitting the floor.
"Wow! Iris what was that?! I've only seen stuff like this on anime!" Lila exclaimed, amazed by what happened.
"Well Apollo said that this school used to be a school for the young to learn how to use magic, both from my world, this world, and the kingdom of negativity. However as time passed and earth became more distant from the worlds of magic this part of the school was forgotten, since you needed a magic key in order to access it," Iris explained.
"Wait, our school used to teach kids magic?! Wow I'm so happy my parents had me attend this place!" Erick exclaimed.
"Me to this is awesome! Like something right out of a movie!" Josh exclaimed.
"It is but for me, it's from a book after all I've read this thing happening in fiction books," Jane said.
"Hey let's go Iris said that Apollo wanted something so let's go in so we can figure out what he wanted," Hannah was said, curious to see what Apollo had asked for.
"Yeah, let's go before the school closes for the day," Iris said then led everyone into the magical library.
When they went in the doors to the library closed behind them before returning to the normal wall it was before. As they wandered through the library they were amazed by the seemingly endless amount of books.
Ed was wondering if there were any books about history that the school didn't have as what Iris said about earth piqued his interest in seemingly forgotten history.
Jane meanwhile was wondering if there were any fiction books that she could enjoy reading, like some of the limited edition books she wasn't able to get from her favorite author.
"Wow this is amazing. I never thought I'd be seeing something like this in real life! I thought this was just fiction or stuff that you'd see in cartoons," Daniel explained, ecstatic by what he was seeing.
"Well magic is as real as humans are, humans just forgot about it as it hasn't been used on earth in many, many long years," Iris explained.
"But how do you know that Iris?" Jenny asked curiously.
"Well history about this is still well known in my world thanks to immortal beings like Apollo and other spirits," Iris explained.
"Really? What kind of spirits? I wanna take some notes on this!" Ed exclaimed while getting out a notebook and pencil.
"Well there are three celestial spirits and four elemental spirits. There's Sunblaze, she's the spirit of the sun. Moonstone, she's the spirit of the moon, And finally there's Earthbound, she's the spirit of the earth. Now for the elemental spirits, Fireblaze, he's the fire element. Aquamarine, she's the water element. Groundup, he's the nature element. And finally Air Breeze she's the wind element," Iris explained.
"Ahh fascinating! I can't wait to learn even more than what our school can teach us!" Ed exclaimed excitedly.
"Hehe I'm happy to hear that you're excited to learn more, that's what will allow you all to be great Rainbow Squads! Apollo always says that the more you know the better advantage you'll have," Iris explained.
"Well not always, sometimes you just need to have the upper hand and an insane mind!" Josh exclaimed while pointing to his head.
"Hehe, yeah I saw the inside of your head Josh and it is indeed crazy, you come up with the wildest escape ideas," Iris explained.
Josh smiled before he and the others all continued to follow Iris to where she was going.
"So Iris, what exactly are we looking for?" Daniel asked.
"Well after Hannah's amulet got stolen and the whole incident with that parasite thing, Apollo said that it's time for the old fashioned ways of magic on earth to be used again," Iris explained.
"Um, that kinda leaves us with more questions than answers. What does that mean Iris?" Hannah asked.
"Well it means that it's time for you all to start learning how to use magic without your amulets," Iris explained.
"Wait what?! I-Is that even possible?" Jane asked, surprised.
"Yeah can we even use magic without our amulets?" Jenny asked, feeling a bit worried.
"Yes you can, but it won't be easy as humans haven't used magic in that way for a long, long time," Iris explained.
After hearing Iris' explanation Daniel thought that if humans had used magic in the past, what if he could try learning magic?
"Well I hope it won't be as stressful as trying to explain to Miss Celine about where the experiment for the science fair went," Hannah said.
"Ohh right I almost forgot about that," Erick said.
"Yeah, how are we going to explain that to her?" Jake asked.
"Actually guys I don't think we have to," Ed said.
"Huh? Why don't we have to, Ed?" Jenny asked.
"Well I talked to her earlier today and apparently she doesn't have any recollection of it at all. When I asked her about it she told me she never entered anything into the science fair, but a kid in our class named Jeff had entered something he had been working on into the science fair," Ed explained.
"Really? That's strange. I wonder why she doesn't even remember it?" Josh asked.
"Well that thing could have some kind of influence on everyone's memories so it must've erased itself out of everyone's memories except for us," Ed theorized.
"I wouldn't put it past that thing to do something like that," Hannah said.
"Well I'm shocked that thing did what it did to you, and I swear if it goes after you again I'll destroy it!" Daniel exclaimed angrily, still mad at what that parasite did to his little sister.
"Hey guys I found what I came here for!" Iris called out to the group who didn't even notice that she wandered away from the group. The group walked up to where they heard her and saw she was standing next to a book podium holding a large old book in her hands.
The tips of the book had gold embedded in them, the cover itself was made from beautiful rainbow colored silk. The title of it was made with different colored crystals that were each a part of the rainbow. The title itself read "Rainbow Squad Spell book, Both with and without Amulets."
"This is what Apollo asked me for. He needed this spell book so he could teach you all how to use magic and cast spells with and without your amulets!" Iris explained happily.
"Ohh it's pretty!" Jenny exclaimed.
"Yeah whoever made it knew what they were doing! I wonder if the person who wrote it could give me some tips?" Lila asked.
"Actually this was written and made by previous Rainbow Squads," Iris explained.
"What what? The Squads before us?" Josh asked, surprised.
"Yeah most of them made up their own spells and added them into the book! I can't wait to see if you all will do the same thing!" Iris exclaimed while hugging the book.
Daniel then checked his phone and saw a text from his and Hannah's mom saying, "Hey when are you two coming back?"
Daniel then started texting back, "Oh we're on our way Iris just needed our help finding something."
After he sent the text his mother replied, "Alright but be home soon, I'm making shrimp and noodles for dinner tonight."
After Daniel read the text he just sent a simple, "Okay" before putting his phone back in his pocket.
"Hey guys I hate to rain on the parade but we gotta get going. Mom just asked me about where we are and she also said she's making shrimp and noodles for dinner so we gotta get home," Daniel explained.
"Aww, well I guess we can talk about this tomorrow after the fair," Iris said as she stepped away from the podium and led everyone out of the secret Library.
Meanwhile in the shadow realm, Adrienne was in her room doing her nightly routine before she enjoyed her dinner. However she was interrupted by a sudden presence right behind her. Just then a pair of arms with black, white, and red striped sleeves wrapped around her sliding right up to her shoulders.
"Why hello my darling queen, you've grown up so much since the last time I saw you~" a high male voice said seductively.
Adrienne groaned as she knew all too well who her new uninvited guest was. She was also annoyed as she knew all too well that he was so egotistical that he didn't even bother knocking and just came in whenever he wanted. So she pushed his hands off of her and turned to face the one who entered her room.
"Hello Jack, how are you doing?" Adrienne asked, making it clear how annoyed she was.
The Jester who wore a casual clown costume that was colored red, white, and black. The main chest area had the three colors decorating it, the upper half was black and white, while the bottom half of it was red. His head was split into three tails and each section of it was the three colors. His shoes were curled at the tips with bells on them and they were a dark black.
"So what took you so long and where is your brother? I requested his presence as well!" Adrienne demanded to know.
"Oh he's outside of the room but I came here as I wanted to see you again after all this time~" Jack explained seductively.
"Ugh well you know why I requested for, you right?" Adrienne asked, annoyed.
"Oh yes you're having trouble with the new Rainbow Squads so you called me and my brother in for reinforcements right?" Jack asked.
"Yes. Now how long will it take for the two of you to be ready to fight them?" Adrienne demanded to know.
"Oh well possibly... carry the two... about a few weeks," Jack said.
"Hmm well you better make it quicker then a few weeks as they are growing stronger by the day," Adrienne explained.
"Ohh don't worry my dear princess we'll have what you need ready before you know it~" Jack said seductively as he traced a finger under Adrienne's chin only to have her smack his hand away.
"Get out of my room, I prefer to enjoy my dinner alone," Adrienne stated very clearly.
Jack raised his hands before leaving the room feeling proud of himself but also a little annoyed at Adrienne's attitude to him.
"Ha nice one Jokester!" Jack heard his brother say in his southern accent.
"Pardon me you snake tail but I was just saying hello to our queen and letting her know that we were here," Jack explained to his brother.
"Uh yeah you were, let's just get to work. Just the thought of those Rainbow Squads wandering the earth makes me sick," Jack's brother said as he went to the rooms he and Jack would be staying in.
In the shadows Samuel was watching the two brothers, feeling angry that they were called in. In his opinion the two weren't necessary as he knew what they needed to do in order to stop the Rainbow Squads once and for all.
"Using normal animals that still exist is too small, but what about something more prehistoric in human history? Such as creatures that once roamed the earth but are now extinct? Oh hehe, after I'm done with the Rainbow Squads Adrienne will see that these two aren't needed," Samuel claimed to himself before heading to bed planning on attacking tomorrow.
The next day at the Science fair, The Squads were chilling at one of the stands near the booth for their school. "Ugh I'm bored I wonder what this new science fair project this Jeff kid made?" Josh asked.
"Well I'm not sure but he is a smart guy like me," Ed said.
"He's not as smart as he comes in second in class from you," Erick explained.
"Even if he does he's still worth praise as he works hard on what he does," Ed explains.
"What I want is to have this fair be over with so we can go home and get ready!" Josh exclaimed.
"Ready for what?" Iris asked.
"Um VidCon! And Guess what! I got an invite! I also managed to get tickets for us all!" Josh exclaimed excitedly.
"Ohh really! I've never been to Vidcon before! I can't wait to go there!" Jenny exclaimed.
"Um hey what's Vidcon?" Iris asked.
"It's where Youtubers and content creators go to meet up with their fans! I have a little blog I've been doing for about two years now. I normally do some harmless but funny prank videos on there but my friends here also do their own thing. Erick sings, Jane tells stories, Jake does let's plays, Jenny does cooking tutorials, Ed does science experiments, and Lila here does DIY clothing crafts and drawings and recently Hannah here shows off some impressive martial arts on them!" Josh explained happily.
"Wow, that sounds like a lot of fun!" Iris exclaimed.
"It is! And I can't wait to go to Vidcon this weekend!" Josh exclaimed.
"Yeah and when Josh told me last night I told my dad and he said he'll prepare everything that we'll need for the week ahead!" Ed explained.
"Ohh! Can I come?" Iris asked.
"Do you even need to ask? Of course you can come Iris!" Josh exclaimed.
Iris smiled at that, then Danile came up to the stand the Squads were at and looked around for Apollo, but didn't see him.
"Um hey Iris where's Apollo?" Daniel asked.
"Oh him, he's over there talking to the other adults," Iris said while pointing over to Apollo.
"Okay thanks," Daniel said before walking over to Apollo and tugging lightly on his suit getting his attention.
"Hmm? Oh Daniel how nice to see you again," Apollo said.
"Hey Son, what's up you need something?" Daniel's father asked.
"Um yeah I want to ask Apollo something if that's alright," Daniel explained.
"Ah I see excuse me I'll be right back," Apollo said before taking Daniel aside to talk to him.
"So Dan, what is it that you want to talk about?" Apollo asked.
"Well I was wondering if um... could it be possible if I learned how to use magic?" Daniel asked.
Apollo hummed for a bit thinking about what Daniel had asked of him, something like this was a very big thing to ask and very hard to learn for those who weren't exposed to magical artifacts.
"Are you sure you want to learn how to use magic? It won't be easy, it will possibly be the hardest task of your entire life. After all humans haven't used our kind of magic for almost millions of years so I'm not even sure if you can even use it," Apollo explained.
"Well I thought that someone outside of the Rainbow Squads could be there as backup incase of an emergency," Daniel explained.
"Hmm are you sure this isn't about your sister?" Apollo asked Daniel, wanting to know if he's genuine about learning magic for his own interest or if it was to protect his sister. While he didnt object to him wanting to protect his sister he wanted Daniel to learn through his own interest as he knew that Hannah could protect herself.
"Well it's-" CRASH BANG!!" Daniel was interrupted when a crash was heard and people started to panic and run away from the area.
Concerned, Apollo ran to the area where the noise was coming from and Daniel ran after him wanting to see what was going on. When the two got there they saw a giant shadow T-rex roaring and destroying the area.
"What in the world!" Daniel exclaimed.
"Dan! Stay there, I'll go help the Squads!" Apollo commanded as he went back into his peacock form and flew off to help the rest of the Squads.
Meanwhile the Squads had already transformed and were now fighting the shadow. "Okay, how on earth can a shadow turn into a dinosaur? I thought it was only their spirit animal?!" Erick exclaimed, confused.
"Oh I can explain that," Samuel stated as he flew into view.
"Oh yeah well guess what I was being sarcastic!" Erick exclaimed.
Samuel groaned and rolled his eyes before commanding his shadow to attack them again. The T-Rex roared before attacking and Daniel was getting anxious over the fight.
"Guys, let's take care of this thing with Rainbow Collision!" Hannah exclaimed.
"Aww Yeah! Let's do this! We haven't done that in a while, let's go!" Josh exclaimed.
"Yeah, let's go and it's so pretty and awesome!" Lila exclaimed as she got into the position to use Rainbow Collision. However before any of them could do anything the Shadow started pounding on the ground causing the group to lose their balance and fall to the ground.
"Ugh! Ow that wasn't very nice!" Jenny exclaimed.
"Hehe well I never knew of playing fair Shadow crush them!" Samuel commanded his shadow monster. The Shadow roared before lifting its foot up in the air and was about to crush the squads.
When Daniel saw this his eyes widened and without thinking he started running to the Squads and his little sister. 'I gotta do something! Iris said humans probably still can use magic so I gotta try!' Daniel thought to himself as he ran up to the shadow and stood in front of the Shadow.
When Hannah saw her brother standing in front of her and her friends she got scared and tried to get up to stop him. However a red glow immediately came from Daniel's chest and his hair started glowing red. A red force field was formed around them and it stopped the shadow right in its tracks before it could've done anything to them.
"W-What the?! A human using magic?! B-But that's impossible. No human here has used magic in ages. How is this possible?!" Samuel questioned, surprised and confused.
"W-What the?! Daniel, how did you do?" Jake asked but trailed off from the shock.
"Guys I can't keep this up forever! Get rid of this thing now!" Daniel exclaimed as he struggled to keep the forcefield up, not used to this new feeling of magic flowing through him.
"Oh right we'll ask later. Guys let's go!" Hannah commanded as she and the others got back in position.
They all then formed a heart and shouted "RAINBOW COLLISION!" And a rainbow blast hit the Shadow turning it back into a regular person.
"AGH! NONO NO! I can't believe this! Now humans are going back to using magic! Ugh Adrienne won't like this one bit!" Samuel exclaimed as he left.
After Samuel left Daniel let the force field down before collapsing feeling drained and exhausted from what he just did. "Oh god! I didn't think using magic was that draining!" Daniel exclaimed.
"Dude! That was awesome!" Josh exclaimed.
"Yeah gotta say I didn't expect you to suddenly use magic!" Jane exclaimed, just as surprised.
"M-Me neither! But that felt so good for some reason!" Daniel exclaimed.
"Just like how I felt when I used magic for the first time," Erick said while smiling.
"And I must say that was quite unexpected," the gang heard Apollo say. They looked over and saw him flying there and he looked quite amazed. "I didn't not expect you to use magic so suddenly like that, Daniel. However I feel like there might be more than what it seems," Apollo explained.
"Y-Yeah I just wanted to protect Hannah and her friends so badly and I just felt it!" Daniel explained.
"Hmm well whatever the case, it's clear that you can use magic Daniel; therefore, I believe that you should indeed learn how to use it," Apollo said, accepting Daniel's request to learn how to use magic.
"Really! Y-You mean it?" Daniel asked.
Apollo nodded and Daniel smiled and jumped for joy as he genuinely wanted to learn how to use magic. Hannah smiled happily that she and her brother can learn how to use magic together. However she felt that there was more to how Daniel used magic than just the idea that humans used it in the past like the two of them were somehow connected directly to it.
