Chapter 11 The Journey

Two months later, two weeks before summer ended, Josh and Lila were sitting at the table with their parents having breakfast. However Josh was just picking at his food not feeling very hungry that day. Jason took notice of this and decided to ask his stepson if everything was alright.

"Hey Josh are you alright? You haven't touched your food and that's rare for you," Jason explained, worried.

"Yeah Dad I'm fine, just a little down, my mind just went to Katelyn that's all," Josh explained sadly.

"Oh her... I'm sorry she turned you down, but hey you'll find someone else," Abmel said, trying to reassure her son.

"I know Mom, but it's just so hard to accept. After all, I really liked her but when she told me she had a boyfriend it was just crushing," Josh explained as his eyes began to water a little.

Lila looked at her brother with worry and thought about how she could try to cheer him up. She then remembered that everyone in the team had no plans for today so she decided to have them all organize a day out together. So after they were done with breakfast Lila ran up to her and Josh's room and got on her laptop to video call the others.

"Hey Sis, what are you doing?" Josh asked as he entered the room with Lila.

"Oh just calling up the others! Since no one has any plans today I thought we could all hang out together!" Lila explained happily.

"Really? How come Sis? I'm not against it, I'm just curious to know," Josh asked.

"Well because you're feeling a bit blue today, so I decided that to help you feel better we're going out for friend bonding time! You always feel so much better when we all hang out together. So I thought if we all spent some time with each other we could just have some fun! Summer is almost over and things can get crazy for our families on the weekends during the school year so better not waste it!" Lila exclaimed as she went back to calling the rest of The Squads.

"Hehe thanks Sis, you always know how to help me feel better," Josh said as he climbed up on his sister's bed.

"Hey, why don't we also bring our animal guides along with us! I could bring Umang to the park. I'm sure he'll love to meet the other dogs there," Josh explained.

"Hehe sure I'm sure that they would love that," Lila said.

Meanwhile with Iris, she was practicing her magic in her garden when she heard someone coming up to her. She opened her eyes and saw Apollo walking up to her with a serious look on his face.

"Oh hey Apollo what's up?" Iris asked, wondering why he looked so stern.

"Iris, someone anonymous had just informed me that Adrienne is planning on stealing magical artifacts and invading the kingdoms they reside in. So I need you to take the Rainbow Squads to those kingdoms to alert the citizens and rulers of the invasion so they'll be more prepared for what is to come," Apollo explained.

"Really? Are you sure? A trip like that will take two weeks and that's how long summer will last," Iris explained.

"Yes I am sure, we can't allow those kingdoms to end up just like our own kingdom. Besides, consider this as a learning experience for the Squads as they will need to take on different forms if they want to master each world where the kingdoms reside," Apollo explained.

Iris nodded and got up to inform her friends about the news. However she wondered who had given Apollo the information about the invasions that were planned for those other kingdoms. Iris got on the laptop Jake bought for her as a gift and something that would allow her to play games with the group when they had game night. She turned it on and went on video chat and saw the whole squad in the chat room.

"Hey guys, how are you all doing?" Iris asked.

"Hey, not much Iris. Lila was just suggesting we all go out and have a day with one another," Jenny explained.

"I'm totally in for it after all. Who doesn't want to hang out with their friends?" Jake asked.

"Definitely not me! Whenever I get the chance to spend time with my friends I always take it!" Erick exclaimed.

"Well um I'm sorry to say but if we'll have to pack items that'll last us for two weeks and head out," Iris explained.

"Huh?! Wait, why do we have to do that Iris?" Jenny asked, confused.

"Yeah what's going on and why do we have to go for two weeks, that's the amount of time that we have left of summer," Ed explained.

"I know but Apollo informed me that someone anonymous had informed him that Adrienne plans on invading different kingdoms and stealing their magical artifacts. So we have to go there and alert them about the upcoming invasions so those kingdoms won't end up like my own," Iris explained.

"WHAT! Are you kidding?! We gotta go for two weeks on Rainbow Squad duty and it's gonna last the same amount of time as the rest of the summer!" Josh whined.

"Yeah sorry, but think of it as something really cool as you all will be taking different forms to be able to explore the other kingdoms," Iris explained.

"Yeah but still Iris, how are we going to explain this to our families after all we can't just disappear for two weeks and come back like nothing happened," Hannah explained.

"Don't worry I got an idea for that! We can say that we're going camping for two weeks!" Ed explained.

"Um camping? Ed you know that I'm not much of a camper, right? So it'll seem strange to my parents if I tell them I'm going camping for two weeks," Jake explained.

"Well it does seem like the most logical thing to do after all our parents are always telling us to get out more so if we say we're going camping it won't look strange," Jane explained.

"Alright it's settled then! Let's all start packing up our things and get going before anything bad happens to those kingdoms," Hannah declared.

Everyone nodded and ended the call to begin packing up their gear for the journey ahead.

In the shadow realm, Adrienne was fuming with rage and destroying the training room. She threw training dummies and spears everywhere and tore up the walls. "AGH! WHEN I FIND THAT TRAITOR! I WILL DESTROY THEM!!!!!" Adrienne screamed furiously.

"Um your majesty w-what h-happened?" a shadow shifter asked as they eased into the room.

"Someone within our ranks is a filthy traitor! I just found out that they leaked very vital information to our enemies and they now know about our invasion plans for those other kingdoms," Adrienne explained very angrily.

"O-Oh I see... well if this is a bad time I can inform you later," the shadow shifter explained.

"Inform me of what?" Adrienne asked.

"W-Well the others along with the royal counsel are in the meeting room waiting for you as you did schedule a meeting for today regarding the invasions," the shadow shifter explained.

"Ah right, well I let out all the rage I was feeling so I'm in the mood to do something that should be easy enough," Adrienne explained.

She tidied up her hair and brushed her dress off, as she wanted to look appropriate for the meeting. She immediately left with the anxious shadow shifter outside the meeting room. When she got there she saw her five main generals sitting on one side of the long oval shaped table and the royal council on the other side. She walked into the room, sat down, and slammed her hands on the table as hard as she could, thus getting everyone's attention.

"Alright now that I have your full attention I'm going to explain the plans for the invasion," Adrienne explained.

"Um your highness I hate to say this, but are you sure you still wanna go through with the plans? After all, now that the Squads know they will surely try to stop us, as they do now have a dimensional key," one of the council members explained.

"Yes I am aware however we are not ones to give up, all we have to do is invade either before the Squads inform the Royals or before they even have a chance to defend themselves," Adrienne explained.

"So the invasions are still on?" Shade asked.

"Yes they are, you all don't see it, but when it comes to the concept of war well it's like a card game. I've studied human war and I've seen many mistakes that were made that could've led to victory for the ones who were on the opposite side. Like World War II, I studied many of the strategies of this human Hitler. However there were many flaws in his planning. If he had played his cards right then he would've won and all those pathetic Jews, along with all those other inferior humans, would've been erased from the world! Much like him I want to conquer as much land and destroy all those who are positive. So we play our cards right and we will come out victorious in this battle of war," Adrienne explained.

"Alright so where should we go first your majesty?" Jack asked while wrestling his head on his hands.

"We'll be invading under the sea! First up is... the Merpeople!" Adrienne declared.

Meanwhile back on earth, the Squads all made it to Iris's home with the gear they would need for the long two week long trip. They also had their animal guides with them and they were all so excited.

"This is incredible! We're going to see other dimensions again after two long years! Akira exclaimed.

"I know oh I wonder where we're going first? The Amazons? Or The Fairies! Oh Oh! Maybe even the trolls!" Dillion exclaimed excitedly.

"Wow Dillion calm down a little, let'sss let Irisss tell usss where we're going," Katie explained.

"Well I don't care where we're going! I just wanna see the fairies again!" Paccia explained.

"Hey, you all seem to be excited," Ed stated as he walked over to the animal guides.

"Yeah we are!" Amara exclaimed as she flew up to Ed and landed on his shoulder.

"It's been so long since we last went to other worlds aside from this one so it's exciting to do this again!" Amara exclaimed.

"I'm just hoping that when we get to our first destination it'll be a place where I can chase my tail!" Umang explained while wagging his tail, then instantly chasing it.

"Hehe Umang you're cute, but I just wanna have a bit of a peace of mind for a while as we've been working hard teaching you all, and Daniel hasn't been doing so well with his own magic has he?" Faith asked.

"Sigh... Not really, he's still trying to use levitation but his magic isn't responding that much," Hannah explained sadly.

"Yeah that's why both me and him are staying here," Apollo explained as he came into the room. "Daniel needs to stay here and practice more as right now he isn't suited to go out to other dimensions and he needs to control his powers so he won't use them involuntarily as I've noticed that happens at times."

"Aww Apollo do you have to say? After all, you might know more about those other worlds than the rest of us," Josh complained.

"I do but Iris will be leading you all through these worlds, this isn't just a training exercise for you all but also a test for her royal duties in the future. After all Iris will need to practice her skills with communicating with other royal families for the future when she becomes queen. I'm also hoping that another good thing will come out of this once you all return," Apollo explained.

"What's that Apollo?" Hannah asked.

"I'm hoping that when you all return one of you will be deemed the leader of the Rainbow Squads," Apollo explained.

"Wha? Leader? But isn't Iris the leader?" Hannah asked, confused.

"Yeah after all she is the princess so isn't she the leader?" Jenny asked.

"Not really, I'm going to be busy with queen stuff when I become the queen of my kingdom so I can't be leader. So that's why one of you will need to show your strengths in the team and that's how you all will be judged on who will be the leader," Iris explained.

"Wait, so one of us will be chosen to become the leader of the Rainbow Squads?" Jake asked.

Apollo nodded his head lightly, when the squads got the answer they became a little anxious to who will become the leader.

"Um... Hey Hannah you still havent had any nightmares have you?" Josh asked, hoping to change the topic to help them feel a little less anxious.

"Huh? Oh yeah, after we ran into those creeps back at Vidcon they stopped completely," Hannah explained.

"Well if they had stopped then I'm guessing it was to warn you of them," Amanda added.

"What? Why? Amanda you've been with the previous owner of my amulet. Do you know who Jack and John are as they seemed to know who the previous owner was based on what they had said?" Hannah asked.

"Not much as the last owner hung out with them during his down time and I would be reporting about his progress as the Rainbow Squads system was very different from what you all are doing. However one day when I was in a meeting there was an accident in one of the workshops Jack and John worked at and after that he never spoke to them again," Amanda explained feeling confused about the whole thing.

"That's strange? I wonder why they stopped talking and practically stopped being friends," Jane mused, feeling confused.

"I think we should ask them, they might tell us more," Ed suggested, making everyone look at him, surprised.

"Well I guess it never hurts to ask them, right?" Jenny asked.

"I'm actually hoping we never run into them again as I have a bad fear of clowns and that Jack guy freaked me out badly," Jake explained.

"True and I also don't want to see them again," Iris said while looking down and rubbing her arms.

The Squads all looked at her confused by what she said as it was rare for her to say something like that.

"Iris, why don't you want to see them again? Don't you think, like Light, Mary, and Smith? Jack and John might also be under the control of Adrienne and her father," Lila inquired.

"I honestly don't know when we first met them I got this horrific sense of an enormous amount of hate. It wasn't anything like what Adrienne or even her father have. It's also not like what's corrupting my people, my fiance, my friend, and my uncle. Whatever it was, it wasn't good and I felt sick when I was near them," Iris explained, feeling scared as she recalled how she felt.

Hannah frowned and walked up to Iris and put her hand on her friend's shoulder, comforting her. Iris looked up at Hannah and saw she had a reassuring look on her face; she smiled and hugged Hannah, who hugged her right back. The whole Squads all joined in the hug allowing Iris to feel a lot better then how she did before.

"Princess, Squads, Animal Guides, I want you all to straighten up and listen to me before you all go!" Apollo called out.

Everyone stood up immediately after Apollo said that, and the guides went to their assigned Squad.

"I want you all to understand that the journey ahead will be long and dangerous, so you all will need to work together as a team, for any turf. This journey will challenge you all physically, mentally, and it will challenge how you all work with each other. I wish you all the best of luck and I pray you all can prevent the other kingdoms from ending up like how our own did. With that I shall entrust the dimensional key to you Iris. You shall guide them through the worlds, but when battle comes I want you to allow the Squads to work together and allow one of them to show if they can be a leader or not," Apollo announced as he handed Iris the key.

"Wow, t-thanks Apollo having this key is amazing! Don't worry Apollo! We won't let you down! We'll stop Adrienne and save those other kingdoms from becoming just like our own!" Iris declared, as she remembered that the key was the safest way to travel between worlds. Apollo could open a portal himself but only for five seconds and he'd pass out for a whole month afterwards. It was also dangerous to open a portal without a frame to keep it stable as there was a risk of a portal collapse which could be harmful or even deadly to those who were still inside and didn't make it all the way through.

She then looked towards her friends who all now looked very anxious about this trip. She didn't blame them after all, something like this wasn't going to be easy, from the stories she's heard about how it was for the previous Rainbow Squads she knew they would be pushed to their limits for adapting, surviving, and working together. However from what Iris saw in how they all interacted with each other she knew they could do it.

"Alright you guys are you all ready to go?" Iris asked.

"Yeah I am! I can't wait to see the new sights and learn the kind of music they play there!" Erick exclaimed excitedly.

"Yeah and I can't wait to try the new foods they got!" Josh exclaimed.

"I'm hoping to learn something new in the new world," Ed said excitedly.

"I wanna learn the kinds of cooking techniques they have!" Jenny exclaimed.

"I'm hoping to see what they have for entertainment there," Jake said.

"I'm hoping to see what kind of books they have, and if I can bring them home," Jane said.

"I'm wondering what kind of art and fashion they have the same with!" Lila exclaimed.

"Well I don't know what to find there but I am hoping for the best for everyone," Hannah said.

"Alright, good for all of you! Now let's go to... the Mermaids!" Iris exclaimed as she readied the key and used it to open a doorway to the mermaid realm.
