Chapter 7: Vetus Aurum, et Amiculos Pugionibus

It didn't take much time for Rascal to put on the harness and the muzzle, with me assisting of course. I wouldn't allow Mitch anywhere near Rascal.

Muttering apologies and comforting rubs, Rascal wasn't too upset. I could see Mitch watching from the corner of my eye, slightly impatient but interested in our little moment.

Examining Rascal, he seemed a bit distant, trying to figure something out.

"You really bonded with that thing?" Mitch asks, and Red seemed to be thinking the same thing too, if not, more.

Not once making eye contact with them, I press my forehead against Rascal's, caressing his cheek with my thumb.

It's weird to see it from someone else's point of view, but really, if you were close with an animal you would do this too.

Well, I am right about this being weird. I'm pretty sure almost all of the people around here never had any form of contact with an animal in their lives, ever.

Minus Mitch, Mitch always rode horses each time he patroled around each district, sometimes he would take time to feed it when he got to Equorum, the fifth district. I only saw him outside of the library a few times when he was taking a break to buy wheat, even Apple's and golden apple's for his favorite.

Which also brings up the question, where was his horse? Why did he have to carry me?

It's none of my business, some would say, but it is. The fact that he would rather carry me over his shoulder rather than just put me inside a cage as his horse pulls it doesn't make any sense.

What exactly is going on?

Sighing, I pull away and stand up from my crouching position, immediately locking eyes with Mitch. I quickly turn to Red.

"We uh, Rascal's a childhood buddy." I say, avoiding eye contact with Mitch.

Red looked surprised, and for a moment he looked like he was about to do a victory dance.

"Oh! Great! We have a badass wolf on our side!" Red exclaims and I couldn't help but laugh.

"Yes, we do. Though let's make sure we protect him too, kinda rare huh?" Surprisingly, Mitch seemed to have spoken up. It took atleast three seconds for the smile on my face to disappear.

"He's in your hands, I doubt you would do any protecting." I glare, looking at Mitch with wary. He doesn't seem to be too pleased with this, gripping the leash tighter.

"I know what I'm doing." Mitch practically growls.

Some part of me feels insulted, and the smallest, feels like I should trust him, and it's almost like I wanted to rip the leash from his hands, then give it back.

We began walking, Rascal now being led by Mitch as he walks in front of the group, not once ever breaking a sweat.

I turn to look at Red, and his expression gave away most of his confusion, but he didn't stop following.

We walked in silence for a few more moments, before I opened my mouth to speak.

"So uh..What did you want to say?" I ask, not bothering to notice the way he snapped out of whatever trance he was in.

I started to feel worried, even more than what I always felt about Archers being 'On guard.' Furrowing my eyebrows, he looks up, a shadow passing over us.

I look up, we were passing the gate, the floor was somewhat made out of marble underneath our feet.

"Isn't he the guard you always talked about...?" His voice was meek, as if afraid that Mitch would overhear. I nod, albeit too much.

It surprised me, to say the least. Remembering the fact that we would always make fun of him or joke about him without a cage, but I'm truth, I never once mentioned his name or what he looked like.

Red seems to tense up, though relaxing through calm breathes again. I don't question it.

"Yeah, you know. Kinda hard since we all made that promise." I say, looking down in a bliss of sadness, Red following.

A breeze passes us, and I close my eyes. My hair began to ruffle, loose curls landing back on my face in a matter of seconds. Realizing this, we were probably already in the castle grounds, but we can't actually reach the entrance to the castle just yet.

The castle was the highest peek in this region, though not as chilly as the ones from the winter or snow biome, it definitely was still cold up there.

We're not even halfway to the entrance and it was already starting to get a bit now chilly.

Red shook his head, as if remembering something, he suddenly jumps and reached in to his shoulder bag, which I haven't really noticed was expensive. Hell, everything he wears looks middle class now that I think about it.

I began to wonder.

"Hey, where'd you end up?" I question and he looks up from the bag with a 'huh?'

It took him a moment analyze what I meant, and he comments an 'oh'.

"Psshh--I uh, ended up as middle class messenger, not really a high pay but it still sufficed my food and clothes." I frown, he's still pretty lucky.

He focuses his attention back to the bag, muttering a 'where is it?'

I also noticed how he seemed to have gained freckles overtime, being a redhead and a messenger after all. You would gain those overtime in the heat.

Noticing plenty of scrolls stuffed in his bag, I raise my brow.

"Aren't you supposed to be delivering those?" I point to the stash of scrolls and he smirks.

"I'm on break. I was lucky to find you here because that means I wouldn't have to travel all the way down to equorum."

It was my turn to roll my eyes, pushing away my curly strands so that were tucked behind my ear.

"Lucky you." Sarcasm.

"How about you? I saw the clothes and all but I thought you were a high class citizen because of this," he paused, still searching for something in his bag. He suddenly pulls out a scroll-- a scroll encased in a golden scroll case. I stop walking.

Carefully, I look ahead and Mitch was still walking with Rascal, a few people now snickering at the large wolf. Rascal suddenly snarls at a brat who tried to to make fun of him right in front of his snout.

The child runs as if he was getting chased by a pack of wolves.

He runs right pass me and Red, not before Red suddenly pulls back hard enough make the child stumble. The child then stuck his tongue out, and like any same, responsible adult would do, Red stuck his tongue out right back.

Wait what?

He huffs, checking to see if the scroll was somewhat damaged or disappeared, he hands of over to me. Then it became obvious what that kid was trying to do.

I scowl at the boy's retreating form and turn my attention back to the scroll, taking it in my hands and holding it as if it was very delicate.

"Red--"

"Ah ah ah, don't thank me yet." He cuts me off and suddenly pulls out a dagger, golden one to be exact. I jump back, almost bumping into the guard guarding the gate.

"What are you--" I didn't get to finish my sentence, because Red's chuckling, holding the dagger in his palms until I noticed a type of cloth wrapped around it.

I look at him skeptically.

"I found it laying on the floor, but,"He turns the dagger over, 'Adam' written in ink on the cloth.

"Jesus, Red." I said, walking back over to where he was standing before taking the dagger and examining it.

It was a hidden hang knife, made out of gold. The handle had lot's of markings that resembles lions, snakes, and even a Dragon. They were all abstract however, so you really wouldn't notice until you looked closely.

It's nice to grip, the hand grooves were definitely comfortable.

Red grins.

"Cool huh?" I nod, turning the dagger around and examining each detail, from the very sharp tip to the tail.

I noticed the small little amethyst embedded in the middle of the booster. A nice little detail. I smile.

I suddenly felt Mitch glare daggers at me, even from a distance. I shuddered, and Red seems to have got on too.

Geez, can't I just get one last moment before I get sent to whatever death penalty the kingdom has for me?

Looking down at the scroll, I gripped it, the soft markings felt like marble, but broken up into a billion pieces.

I hand it back to Red, his expression dropping into confusion. He takes it and looks up at me in utter confusion.

"Adam?"

"Can't carry this to the kingdom, will probably get confiscated." I say, though not before hiding the knife in my boot, even the guard was busy greeting someone.

"I'll take the knife though, for multiple reasons." I stare and he nods in understanding, putting the scroll back.

"Don't wanna read the scroll right now I suppose?" He asks with sarcasm, and I grin.

"Correct."

I turn back to look at Mitch, who seems to be getting more and more impatient as seconds pass. The same kind of stern look now once again in his expression.

It seems forced, whether he really needed to do it or he was gonna be a walking timebob each second I take a step.

I wave a goodbye at Red, looking back in front of me as I jog up to Mitch, stopping right in front of him.

Awkwardly, we share at each other, as if waiting to see what each would do.

It was getting awkward real fast.

After a moment of hesitation, he sighs.

Mitch grumbles, muttering a few incoherent things under his breath as he then grabs my arm.

"Ow!" I yell, clearly not expecting the sting of caused. I pulled back, only creating more painful friction.

His armour dug into the fabric, also squeezing my skin as I try not to scream because Notch, that hurt like a bitch.

Mitch began dragging me over to the entrance, which was still plenty of meters away.

I wanted to ask him where Rascal is, bastard said he would be the only one with him and not hand him to other people as well. Not once succeeding as it went from mutual tugging to dragging.

He noticed this and tugs, a little too hard if I do say so myself. Making me follow begrudgingly, glaring at the back of his head the entire time.

If I make it back out alive, then maybe I can see what the scroll had.

I thought, cursing as I pass a sign which held cursive letters;

Regnante Avaritia.

(A/N: Is it just me or are the chapters going too fast? I really wanted to do something similar to "The Shy Girl has a Gun." With all the slow process of bonding and stuff but I am still not that skilled :'

When wattpad doesn't let you have any beta readers so you just sit there and re-read your work atleast 3 times.)
