Chapter 5

Sky walked into maths class and was surprised to see her usual seat empty. The new guy seemed to get the hint and had moved to the next seat.

She smiled slightly.

She saw him look up at her only to quickly look away. In him turning his head Sky was able to see the bruise on the side of his face. She felt bad for telling Jay about him last week, she knew she was the reason he got the bruise.

Sky found out the day after it happened. She walked into maths class and the new guy wasn't there yet she sat in her seat and when he walked in he didn't look at anyone. It wasn't until he sat down Sky noticed the bruise.

She knew no one would have hit him besides Jay.

"Why'd you hit him?" Sky asked Jay just after maths.

"He was gawking at you yesterday" Jay said as if it was obvious.

"He was looking at my drawings, never just at me. I was joking around with you" Sky said annoyed.

"Well you should have made it clearer next time" Jay said trying to make it seem like it was all her fault.

Sky was annoyed at Jay for a while but he always found a way to get her back. By the weekend they were all loved up again.

Every maths class though, seeing the new guy's bruise, Sky wished she could apologies but was worried it could lead to more trouble for him.

But here she was on a Monday in maths again. She didn't understand why she even came to this class, she never does anything.

"Ah yes class" The teacher started as she finished explaining a problem, that Sky was clearly not paying attention to. "I have to go to a meeting but you all should have enough work to do while I'm gone."

'Yeah like any of us are actually going to do work' Sky thought, smiling to herself

She continued her drawing as the class began to get noise. She didn't want to talk to anyone in the class; there were the snobby girl's and the loser boy's. She didn't want to wreck her reputation over a little conversation. Not after how hard she worked for it.

Sky continued her drawing when she noticed the new guy next to her. He wasn't talking to anyone either. She grew curious and looked over at what her was doing.

"Wow you really are a nerd" Sky said automatically with no thought.

She continued to look at the book. There was so many numbers written on the page.

"Why don't you do something better with your time then solve maths equations?" Sky asked looking up at him. He looked surprised by her second comment. He looked away from her just as quickly as she had looked at him.

Sky smiled at him, she then looked away to continue drawing in her book, seeing that the conversation wasn't going anywhere.

"I don't really have any friends in this class" he said. Sky smiled at his comment. He sounded so sweet but nervous.

"Well if you didn't spend all your time doing maths maybe you would."

---

The teacher came back 10 minutes before the end of class. The student knew what to do when a teacher went to a meeting during class. They would open all their books making it look like they had done work, and 15 or 10 minutes before the bell would go back to their seat and pretend to be doing work.

Sky watch as some student rushed around getting ready for the teachers return. And like clockwork, she walked in and everyone was back at work silently.

Sky watched as the teacher eyed the students. Making sure they were doing work. Everyone was so good a pretending that she probably couldn't tell the difference.

The teacher's eyes met Sky's and gave an annoyed look.

"Miss Lee" the teacher almost shouted. "Come up the front, I need to speak with you."

Sky got up and started to walk towards the teacher. Other student's eyes were locked on Sky. They were probably all hoping she didn't just get them all in trouble.

"Come with me" the teacher said as Sky got to the front of the room.

The two walked out of the room and the teacher closed the classroom door so other students wouldn't hear their conversation.

"Do you know why I pulled you out of class?" She asked Sky.

"No" Sky said confused by the teacher.

"The first test of the semester is coming up and it's come to my attention that you obviously don't focus in class." The teacher stated. She sounded more sympathetic then she did in class.

"Why does it matter?" Sky said still confused.

"Well I'm worried about you" The teacher said, "You used to be one of the best students and now your grades are dropping like crazy."

"Yeah and?" Sky said, trying not to give anything to the teacher.

"Well if you don't past this test, I can't see you passing for the rest of the year. This could mean you not moving up a grade next year."

Sky was shocked by this but tried not to show it. "So what can I do about it?"

"You could study?" the teacher suggested but saw that Sky was obviously not interested in the idea. "Or I could set up for one of the other students to tutor you?"

Sky didn't like either of the options but if she had to choose one...
