Chapter 33 - Playing the Part

*** TWO WEEKS LATER***

"How are you feeling?" Dean asked as he stood with Paige and I backstage. We'd been told our fight was next and as we all stood listening to the crowd cheering Cesaro and Tyson Kidd vs The Ascension, I could feel my heart beating in my ears.

"I'm terrified." I said honestly, twiddling my fingers in anxiety. Nothing could prepare me for this. No amount of training was going to help me conquer these nerves. My limbs were shaking. I could barely stand.

"I'd be fine if I knew where the hell Seth was!" Paige said, looking to her left and right. "He does know this won’t work without him?" I pictured myself stood on the stage with Dean squaring up to me and no music sounding, no Seth running out to help me. This wasn't going to go down well. I swallowed that horrible feeling down just as a stagehand walked up.

"Two minutes guys." He said, holding his earpiece like it was treasure. He must have been new. He walked off without another word.

"Seth's been acting really strange regarding this storyline." Dean carried on our conversation. "I mean when we all met to practice he was really half-assed with it."

"Yeah I noticed that too!" Paige said. "Have you guys practiced your backstage bit for Smackdown?" My mind wandered to our attempt of practicing that backstage part and talking about the kiss.

"What do you mean 'take this seriously'?" Seth said, anger in his voice despite trying to act calm.

"You're not even bothering!" I said back. "You look like you'd rather be elsewhere."

"I would like to be elsewhere!" Seth said, to which my jaw dropped. "How can I practice this scene when I know damn well Roman is going to split me in half after it? He isn't happy!" He had a very good point. Roman had threatened him down the phone and said if he even looked at me the wrong way there would be trouble, yet here we are trying to rehearse a scene where he is meant to kiss me. It’s not meant to be a loving kiss though, just an 'I'm doing this to annoy everyone and prove a point' kiss.

"I told him not to do that." I shook my head in disbelief. "Roman hates this storyline." Roman kept going on about it for days. He hated the idea as soon as he'd read it and called everyone he could think of to tell them he didn't like it. It was embarrassing.

"Yeah I gathered that when he barked orders down the phone at me." Seth said, rolling his eyes and folding his arms across his chest.

"I'm sorry about him." I said, not knowing what to say. "I was telling him to get off the phone to you but he wasn't having it. He said I was sticking up for you." I shrugged. It looks like we aren't going to be practicing the script that much today. Once again we were in a room together, gazing at each other with a weirdly nice tension between us.

"I heard you." Seth said with a half-assed laugh. "I hated that he didn't listen to you." My heart skipped a beat and my breath hitched. I shouldn't be having these kind of feelings towards Seth but somehow we always ended up like this with each other.

"Its fine. He had things on his mind. He's about to see me kiss you live on TV for everyone to see." I said, nerves squeezing and tugging at my stomach.

"Well when you say it like that..." He said, nodding in agreement. "We'd best practice the day away." He said with a half-smile.

"Yeah, its gone pretty well so far." I said, recovering from my dream state to see Paige and Dean staring at me, awaiting an answer. "We're quite confident with it."

"How's Roman taking it?" Dean asked carefully. I shook my head.

"Not well at all." I said, thinking about his reaction to first reading it. "He's warned Seth, had a go at the Creative team and moaned to just about everyone that they even wrote me into a storyline like that." Paige and Dean shook their heads. "But I can't blame him. He's about to see his girlfriend kiss his friend knowing its going out live on TV."

"Good point..." Paige said. "I didn't think of it like that." She looked to her left and right once more for Seth but he still wasn't anywhere to be seen.

"Me neither..." Dean said as the same stagehand walked up to us for a second time.

"It's time!" He said with a smile on his face. I wondered how long he'd thought about saying that line and never had the chance. He seemed so smug after he said it like he'd just achieved his lifetime goal. We all took a deep breath in and out and walked closer to the stage. We all exchanged hugs as the four guys from the previous fight ran past us with huge sighs of relief and grins on their faces.

"Let's kill this!" Paige said, preparing to go out.

Paige's music sounded and she ran out and down the ramp to the screams and cheers of the crowd. She high-fived some of the crowd before she got into the ring, it set out with a table and two chairs. We were about to sign the contract for the TLC title match. Paige grabbed a microphone and made her way to the centre of the ring. She held the title up with the other hand.

"See this? This is the Divas Title. Who is holding it right now? Me. Who will be holding it after this TLC match? Me. Just because I lost a couple of stupid matches against you, Lucy, doesn't mean you're getting anywhere near the title! Its leaving with its rightful owner." She put the belt down on the table and smirked. "So, you'd better get out here and sign this contract if you really want to give it a go, but you'll just lose and embarrass yourself." She let out a devious laugh. My music sounded and I ran out and down the ramp, high-fiving the crowd before skidding into the ring. The nerves were growing and slowly taking over my body. I don't think I can do this. I took a deep breath in and out and thought about how far I'd come already. I wasn't prepared to ruin it just because of some nerves.

"Oh give it a rest, Paige." I spat, receiving cheers from the crowd. "You did all this before and then you lost two matches against me. You're the one embarrassing yourself! You asked for two matches and I gave you two - I've got the marks to prove it." I said pointing at the kendo stick bruise on my face. "Put your title where your mouth is and watch me win it off you." Paige grabbed the pen and scribbled her name on the contract, throwing the pen in my direction.

"Go on then. Unless you're too chicken." Paige said, pointing down to the contract. I grabbed the pen and scribbled my name down too.

"There we are then, Paige. Looks like we have a TLC title match coming up. I hope you're ready to give me the title!" I laughed. Paige dropped the microphone and leapt over the table, striking me with the belt. I fell to the floor but got up with more adrenaline and anger. I jumped her to the floor and punched her repeatedly, before grabbing her hair and hitting her head against the floor over and over again. Dean's music sounded and he ran down the ramp in his jeans and black Unstable shirt pulling me off Paige as soon as he entered the ring. I escaped his grip and ran back to Paige, who was just on her feet, and delivered a drop kick to her chest. Dean grabbed me by my shirt and flung me away from Paige. I walked up to him and he squared up to me, protecting Paige from me.

"Scared I'll break her in half?" I shouted at him. "She's meant to be the champion and she can’t even defend herself, she has to get you to do it!" Dean shoved me backwards but I shoved him back. He gritted his teeth at me and clenched his fists.

"Just walk back down the ramp." He threatened.

"Or what?" I said with an evil smirk. I took another step towards Dean and Paige and he shook his head.

"I won’t be responsible for my actions." Dean threatened again. With a grin on my face, I pushed Dean away and went for Paige again but this time he managed to grab hold of my arm and pull me back towards him, delivering a punch to the side of my head. I fell to the floor and looked down the ramp. Please come out Seth. Please don’t leave us to make this up. "I warned you!" Dean said, also quickly looking down the ramp. My heartbeat felt like it slowed down as I thought my dreaded dream was going to come true. He wasn't coming out. "I don't want to hurt you." Seth's music sounded and my heart began beating normally again, relief washing over me. He ran down the ramp and slid into the ring, shoving Dean away from me.

"Now Dean, we know it’s not fair for you to fight a woman. Let Paige and Lucy fight." Seth smirked at Dean.

"They've got no reason to fight now." Dean said. Seth shook his head and laughed.

"Why? Scared Lucy will beat her to a pulp?” Seth looked down at me, then towards Paige and back to Dean. “I mean it’s not really a competition is it? Lucy has won the last two fights against her…” Dean shoved him backwards and walked over to Paige, helping her up and out of the ring. Paige limped up the ramp using Dean’s shoulder as stability, both of them looking round at us in the ring. Seth’s music played and he held is hand out to help me up. We walked up the ramp cockily, with me gesturing to everyone I was going to be holding the title soon.
