Elephant in the Room

(Y/n) POV

I'm in the driver's seat of the Createrra, speeding across the savannah.

Chris: Whoa! Dude, slow down!

Martin: For our sakes!

(Y/n): Are you kidding?! There's a herd of elephants nearby. Elephants are my absolute favorite animals on the planet. Why wouldn't I be excited?!

Chris: From what we were told, that herd is probably a maternal herd, with moms and babies.

Martin: Speaking of girls, Mom called this morning.

Chris: She called me too.

(Y/n): Hey, my mom called me today as well.

Chris: Isn't it nice that our mom's check in on us every once in a while?

Martin: *casually* Yeah, I always thought of her like a cow.

(Y/n): Huh?

Chris: Did you just say what I think you just said?

Martin: Not that kind of cow, a female elephant is called a cow and she takes really good care of her kid, up to 10 years.

(Y/n): That image isn't going away anytime soon.

*baby elephant trumpet*

(Y/n): Uh-oh. Sounds like a baby elephant in trouble.

I step on the gas and head towards the call until I see a baby elephant walks out of the bushes next to a large boulder, I hit the brakes and the brothers fall forward into the front seat.

(Y/n): It is a baby elephant.

Martin: *recovers* And he is in trouble.

(Y/n): Get the first aid kit, Chris.

I hop out and can tell this baby is scared, so I approach with some caution.

(Y/n): Easy bud. We're here to help.

The baby suddenly ran towards me and wrapped it's trunk around my waist and pressed itself against me.

(Y/n): Okay? There, there, bud. You'll be okay now. Brothers, check his back right foot, I think he's limping.

Chris: Got it.

I continue stroking the baby's head and let him stay close to me, like he normally would do to his mom. Chris then let's me know what they found.

Chris: (Y/n), no wonder he was limping, he's got a thorn in his foot.

(Y/n): Elephant feet are really sensitive, it's strange because elephants are usually very careful about where they step, but accidents do happen.

Martin: That's why I'm gonna name him Thornsly.

Chris: Something else is wrong. He's alone, no sign of his mom anywhere.

(Y/n): He might've wandered away while playing and couldn't find his way back and became lost.

Martin: First things first. Let's get that thorn out of his foot. *pulls out a pair of tweezers* Last time I used these was to get a porcupine quill out of my foot and my arm.

Chris: And your nose. *both brothers laugh* Alright, there we go.

(Y/n): Now use my clay bucket to cover the wound.

Chris: Right. And... done. You'll feel better now.

Thornsly gave all of us a big hug and now we address the issue of him being alone.

Chris: So what do we do now. We can't leave Thornsly out here.

(Y/n): We'll have to take him back to the Tortuga HQ, *coughs* sorry, he'll be much safer there while we search for his mom's herd.

Chris: Sounds like a plan. Do you wanna load him in the back or me?

Martin: Well, baby African elephants can weigh up to 250 lbs. when their born.

Chris: Uh-oh.

(Y/n): *coughs* How 'bout this- *coughs* Crud. *clears throat* Martin, you drive slowly, Chris and I will hold a branch of leaves to get Thornsly to follow us.

Martin: Good idea and it's easier on our backs.

Chris and I grab several branches while my coughs get worse and I feel a headache coming on, Thornsly seemed to pick up on it and earnestly followed even without the branch of leaves as a lure.

Aviva POV

I am working on the miniturizer, while Jimmy makes his lunch.

Aviva: When I'm done adjusting these codes, the guys' miniturizer will be able to shrink them to the size of ants.

Koki: Sounds fun, especially when we're on a picnic.

Jimmy: As long as they don't eat my sandwich.

(Y/n): *coughs* That's it, Thornsly. *coughs* Right this way, bud.

(Y/n) walks in with a baby elephant following him and a tree branch he's holding. I am immediately smitten with Thornsly, as is Koki.

Aviva: Aw, look how precious he is.

Martin: Yeah, this is Thornsly. We found him lost with a hurt foot.

(Y/n): *speech sounds choppy* We already, *coughs* took care of his foot, but- *coughs violently*

Aviva: *worried* What's wrong?!

(Y/n) suddenly collapses as his coughing fit continues.

Aviva: Jimmy! Help me!

Jimmy helps me move (Y/n) to the table, Thornsly then comes up and starts gently poking (Y/n) with his trunk.

Aviva: *checks (Y/n)'s symptoms* Let's see, 100° fever, violent coughing causing shortness of breath from the inflammation of his throat, all this indicates he's got an bacterial infection.

Chris: What could've caused that though?

Aviva: Let's look.

I continue to look over (Y/n) for any potential open wounds, and find one underneath his left arm.

Aviva: Found it! How long ago did you get this?

(Y/n): Northern Europe. *coughs*

Aviva: Our last creature adventure. This is why I tell everyone to do a medicine check whenever a creature adventure is finished, you idiot!

(Y/n): I thought- *coughs* I could fight it off. *coughs*

Aviva: Obviously not. Koki, I'll find some medicine for (Y/n), you help the brothers find Thornsly's herd.

Koki: Got it.

Thornsly: *whines*

Martin: Oh Chris, Thornsly's probably hungry. Baby elephant's drink up to 3 gallons of milk a day.

Chris: But remember, elephant milk is different than the stuff we get at the store. A little soy milk is okay though.

Aviva: I'll find a recipe that matches elephant milk.

Martin: *gives Thornsly baby bottle* There we go, big guy. *Thornsly finishes bottle* Whew, that was fast.

Koki: Okay guys, I found a herd of elephants close by, I just sent the coordinates to your creature pods.

Chris: Great job. Hopefully, it's the one Thornsly belongs to.

But as the brother's try to leave with Thornsly, Thornsly breaks away and goes back to (Y/n)'s side, while also trampling Jimmy's sandwich.

Jimmy: No! *sandwich squished* If I wanted pancakes, I would've made pancakes.

Koki: Oh, Jimmy. He didn't mean to.

Jimmy: *as Thornsly takes jug of water* Great. No water either.

Chris: Wow! Watch how Thornsly uses his trunk to suck up the water and then spray it into his mouth like a hose.

Martin: Oh yeah, elephant's don't have to bend down to get a drink. Their trunk does all the work, it's like having a straw as a nose.

Thornsly sucks up the last bit of water from the jug and instead of drinking it, he walks over an sprays (Y/n) with it.

Koki: Whoa! Hey, he's sick leave him be!

Chris: Whoa! Easy bud.

Thornsly: *sorrowful whine*

Martin: I think he was trying cool (Y/n) down. That's so nice.

Chris: Thornsly, (Y/n) just needs rest, he'll be okay.

Koki: Leave him here, guys. We'll watch them.

Martin: Alright. Hope you get better, (Y/n).

Chris: Let's go, bro!

The brother's leave and I get Thornsly's milk formula ready and continue searching for some medicine for (Y/n).

Aviva: Maldito!

Jimmy: Whoa, I don't think I wanna know what you just said.

Aviva: I don't have anything that can help (Y/n) here, and we are too far from a town to go get any before that wound goes septic.

Jimmy: Septic?

Aviva: When the body responds to an infection damages the tissue surrounding it. The infection-fighting process turns on the body and causes internal organs to function poorly, this could eventually lead to shock then he's in real, life threatening, trouble. If only I had some Cape Aloe, it's used all over the world to act as an antibiotic, and it grows right here in Africa.

Jimmy: What does Aloe look like?

Aviva: It's a medium sized plant with red flowers and wide, thick, fleshy leaves. The leaves have a row of thorns running up the sides and they contain a gel that can act as a antibiotic. *pulls up photo*

Martin POV

We go to the location that Koki gave us and find a group of elephants.

Martin: Wow! You think this is Thornsly's herd, Chris?

Chris: No, this looks like a bachelor herd. Only guy elephants in this herd.

Martin: Oh yeah, male elephants are way bigger than the females and sport much larger tusks.

Chris: Thornsly belongs to the other kind of herd, matriarchal. Just moms and their babies. And they do that in large part to protect each other as well as their babies from predators.

Martin: With more adults around the less likely predators will think about attacking.

The male elephants are currently spraying mud onto their bodies.

Martin: Yeah, check out the way the elephants use their trunks to spray themselves with mud.

Chris: Yeah, the problem with being as big as an elephant is the fact that you have more trouble losing un-needed body heat and can easily become overheated. Elephant's use sand and mud to cover their bodies and cool themselves down on hot days like today.

Martin: That sounds like a great idea.

I get ready to jump into the mud wallow when one of the male elephants sprays me with mud.

Chris: *laughs* You feel cooler now?!

Martin: Yup! You should try it.

Chris: I think I will. *climbs nearby tree* Mud cannonball incomi- WHOA! What was that?!

Martin: The elephant is trying to get some leaves to eat from the tree!

Chris: Does it have to be this tree?

Chris jumps from the tree at the last second and lands face first in the mud wallow.

Chris: *resurfaces* Whoa!

The elephant then knocks the whole tree over in a impressive display of brute strength.

Martin: I can see why (Y/n) loves elephants.

Chris: *impressed* Yeah, elephants have the strength of a bulldozer!

Martin: If it can't reach the leaves it wants, which can be up to 20 ft off the ground, they just knock over the whole tree.

Chris: *as the elephant tears off thick branch with just it's trunk* Whoa! That's a huge branch he just ripped off.

Martin: Yeah, who needs hands when you have a trunk?

Chris: Yeah, trunks can do way more things than hands can.

Martin: *looks at sun* Well, it's getting late, Chris. Let's head back to the Tortuga and we'll start our search again first thing in the morning.

Chris: I'll bring back some branches for Thornsly to eat.

Aviva POV

Thornsly has been trying to leave the Tortuga and I can't figure out why for the life of me. I wish I could get (Y/n)'s input, but he's still sick, and honestly, getting worse. As the sun sets though, the brother's return and we have set up a bed for Thornsly and the brother's outside.

Martin: Okay, looking good!

Chris: Alright, so elephants only sleep for 4 hours a night, and not always in a row. *grabbed and dragged by Thornsly* Whoa! *laughs* And they need constant physical contact when they're away from their moms.

Thornsly then appears to yawn and puts his trunk into his mouth and this does get my mind off (Y/n) for a minute.

Aviva: Aw, look at how he sucks his trunk, like a baby sucks it's thumb. He is so sweet.

Martin: We'll take turns watching him while you guys get some rest and look after (Y/n).

Aviva: What harm can he do?

Martin: Well, he already fritzed out Koki's computer, sprayed (Y/n) and squished Jimmy's sandwich. Baby elephants can be pretty playful.

Aviva: And that's why we love him. Goodnight, Thornsly.

The sun finally sets and Koki and  Jimmy go to their hammocks while I stay up and stay next to (Y/n) and keep an eye on his vitals, until I fell asleep and unwittingly take his hand in mine.

3rd Person POV

Throughout the night, Thornsly tossed and turned in his sleep, keeping Martin and Chris from getting restful sleep. The brother's are now both fast asleep, when Thornsly wakes up and starts getting up and about. Thornsly pokes the brother's, when they do not wake up, Thornsly walks inside the Tortuga, the crew don't hear him walk in and Thornsly finds (Y/n) and sniffs him. Thornsly then wanders into the cockpit and playfully grabs the driving controls, causing the Tortuga to take off fast. This wakes up the crew inside the Tortuga in fright, Jimmy rushes to the cockpit and sees Thornsly driving.

This in turn, wakes the brother's sleeping outside, they see the Tortuga flying around.

Chris: Where are they going?

Martin: The Tortuga's out of control!

Chris/Martin: AHHH! *duck to avoid the Tortuga*

Chris: Tortuga, come in! What's going on up there?!

Aviva: *over comms* Thornsly's taken over the Tortuga! *feed cuts out*

Chris: Aviva, repeat! Thornsly's driving?

On board the Tortuga-

Jimmy: Thornsly, you've gotta move. I gotta drive! *strains as he tries to take control*

Aviva: When Martin said playful, I think he meant 'mischief maker'!

Koki: Whoa!

Thornsly turns the controls to make the Tortuga spin in circles, then flies off, somewhere. Back on the ground....

Martin: Where is the Tortuga going?

Chris: I don't know. But they headed off in that direction. Come on!

Back on the Tortuga...

Jimmy: Try moving him! I can't fly with Thornsly on the controls his trunk is too strong!

Koki: *strains* He won't budge!

(Y/n): Thornsly! Off! I've *cough* got a treat.

Thornsly actually listens and let's go of the controls, Jimmy assumes control as the Tortuga nose dives towards the ground.

Jimmy: We're going down fast! I don't think I can land this- AHHHH!

The Tortuga lands on it's belly hard and skids across the ground.

Jimmy: Without a crash landing. Ugh.

Koki: At least we're all in one piece.

(Y/n): *coughs*

Aviva: (Y/n) get back to the table. Now.

(Y/n) is moved back to the medical table and the crew assesses the damage.

Aviva: Bros, come in. *sigh* Our communication terminals are down.

Koki: My station still okay but I still can't figure out how Thornsly just waltzed in here without us hearing him.

(Y/n): *coughs* *weak* Their feet.

Aviva: Their feet? *accesses elephant footage* Oh, elephant's have thick pads in their feet which not only helps spread their enormous weight, but also surpresses any noise as they step.

Jimmy: But his trunk was like a super strong hand. I couldn't budge it off the lever.

Aviva: Let's see how strong the trunk really is. *pulls up feats of the trunk* Whoa! An elephant's trunk has over 140,000 muscles, so they're able to break branches off trees, hug their mom's neck at night and pick up a leaf.

Koki: Wow. Elephant trunks can hold things, lift things and grab things like levers. It's like having a hand on the end of your nose.

Aviva: Amazing! What else can their trunks do? *scrolls through footage* They also greet each other by wrapping their trunks around each other like a handshake.

Koki: And can be used as a weapon to chase away predators by creating loud sounds or throwing them if they manage to get a hold of them.

Jimmy: *hears his stomach growl* I've gotta get a sandwich. Emergency landings make me hungry.

Aviva: Incredible! I've gotta design elephant software for the creature power suits.

Koki: Hey! Thornsly, where are you going?! Get back here!

Indeed, as Aviva turns around, Thornsly's leaving the Tortuga, Aviva is quick to follow. Eventually, she catches up to him, strangely, at the same rock he was found at.

Aviva: Thornsly, where are you going? We have to get you back to the Tortuga before-

*loud Growl*

Aviva turns around and see three female lions approaching her and Thornsly.

Aviva: Uh-oh. Cut off from the Tortuga. And we can't outrun them, well Thornsly, looks like our goose is cooked.

*TRUMPET*

Suddenly, a huge male elephant charges from the nearby trees and goes after the lions. He puts himself between Aviva and the lions, using his massive size and strong trunk to toss the lions away. After a tense minute, all three lions limp away in defeat, the male elephant then turns to Aviva and Thornsly, looks at them, nods and casually walks away.

Aviva: Whew. I thought for a moment he was gonna squish us too. *Thornsly taps her shoulder* Thornsly, you nearly got us hurt, what in the world could you possibly-

She is cut off by Thornsly moving some bushes out of view to reveal-

Aviva: *gasp* Cape Aloe! Thornsly, you found some! How did you even know it was here? Nevermind, let's get this back to HQ so (Y/n) can start feeling better.

Thornsly happily walks back with Aviva and she gives (Y/n) the proper dose of medicine, thankfully, (Y/n) is already showing relief of pain and agony. Aviva then gets to work on the elephant creature power disc as Thornsly, once again, messes with Jimmy's sandwich by teleporting it to the middle of nowhere. An hour later, and Thornsly starts running around again, his foot catches on the miniturizer cable and accidently pulls the whole thing off the main table. Unfortunately, the miniturizer activates and shrinks Aviva, Jimmy and Koki.

Koki: What happened?!

Jimmy: *scared* We're minturized!

Aviva: *as Thornsly foot falls next to them* Oh no! Run!

The three are strung around trying not to get trampled and end up in Chris' old tennis shoes. Thornsly continues stomping around destroying everything he runs into, and there's nothing (Y/n) can do to help, at least, until the brothers arrive.

Chris/Martin: *exclaim in shock*

Martin: What happened here?

Chris: It looks like a tornado blew through here.

Martin: Hey, are those my lost blue jeans?

Chris: Yup, and what are my sneakers doing here? I put them on the top cupboard.

Martin: *hears small scream* I don't know, but it sounds like you've got loud ants in there.

(Y/n): *groans* It's the crew, bros. They've been miniturized.

Martin: What?!

(Y/n): Can you guys prop the Miniturizer back up on the table, please?

(Y/n) picks up all three crew members and sets them on the miniturizer and the crew are returned to normal sized.

Aviva: Whew. Thanks guys. Good to see you back on your feet, (Y/n).

(Y/n): Well, I still feel like crap, but I'm well enough to help out.

Thornsly: *sad whine*

Jimmy: Is he laughing at me?

Chris: Actually, Thornsly seems upset.

Koki: Not as upset as us. At least my station is still intact after all this.

Martin: When I named him Thornsly, I didn't know he'd be such thorn in our side. *laughs*

Aviva: *whines* All of our work is ruined. I'm sorry, but Thornsly can't stay here if he's gonna destroy everything. You guys better-

Aviva is cut off by Thornsly nuzzling his head against her, she loses her frustration and forgives Thornsly.

Aviva: Aw, it's hard to stay mad at you Thornsly.

(Y/n): Aviva's right about one thing, we need to find Thornsly's mom, and soon.

Koki: Hey guys, I'm picking up a low frequency rumble traveling along the air.

Jimmy: I don't hear any rumbling, other than my stomach.

(Y/n): Amplify?

Koki: *amplifies* What is that?

(Y/n): *slight cough* It's infrasound. Another elephant is making that sound.

Aviva: Really?

(Y/n): Yeah, elephants can make all sorts of sounds, most of which we can't even hear. And it can travel very far, up to 10 miles, it's used as communication between different herds or as a distress call.

Chris: Kinda like if you listen to music with lots of bass, it makes the glass shake.

Jimmy: *as (Y/n) demonstrates* Cool.

Chris: Aw man, Thornsly's really upset.

(Y/n): Koki, where did you say that sound is coming from? That elephant could be Thornsly's mom.

Koki: Northeast of here.

(Y/n): *Thornsly tries to leave* Brother's follow that elephant. We'll come to you when you find the elephant in trouble.

Chris: Got it.

Martin: Right behind you bro.

(Y/n): Aviva *coughs* how are the creature power discs coming?

Aviva: Working on them.

(Y/n): Jimmy, ready the Createrra for when the bros call Koki.

Jimmy: Aye sir.

Martin POV

We follow Thornsly for several meters until he slows down and listens.

Chris: Check it out, Martin. Even baby elephants can listen to infrasound. And their sense of smell is better than a bloodhound.

Martin: He definitely knows another elephant is in trouble.

*distressed elephant call*

Chris: That sounds like an adult elephant. Let's go!

Martin: Right behind you!

We continue following Thornsly until we come over a hill and see-

Martin: A matriarchal herd, and one of them is stuck in the mud.

Chris: And look she's also the only one that doesn't have a baby. It is Thornsly's mom!

Martin: *calls on comms* Koki! We found the distressed elephant, Thornsly's mom is stuck in the mud and the rest of the herd can't reach her.

(Y/n) POV

(Y/n): Aviva, we need those discs like yesterday.

Aviva: Just give me two minutes!

(Y/n): Hang tight, bros. We'll come to you. Everyone load up, we're doing this offroad.

Everyone loads into the Createrra and I hit the gas, I may not be back to full strength, but I definitely have enough strength to help an elephant in need. I drive fast until we find the brothers.

(Y/n): Aviva?

Aviva: I've never worked so fast, but all three power discs are ready.

(Y/n): Koki, Jimmy, start stretching the winch cable. Aviva get ready to pull when I say so. Female elephants can weigh 8000 lbs!

I hop out and give the brothers their discs, we slip the discs into the suits and-

Chris/Martin/(Y/n): *touch Thornsly* Activate Creature Powers!

(Y/n): *suit forms* *marvels* Whoa! I feel so strong and I've got the most versatile appendage on the planet! This is the best, ever!

Aviva: Quit standing there gawking!

(Y/n): *recomposes himself* Right. Alright, Martin, you pull her trunk with your trunk. Chris and I will do the pushing.

Martin: *talks to mother elephant through suit* Not bad for a fake elephant call.

(Y/n): Now, PUSH!

Martin pulls, Chris and I push and we slowly start moving Thornsly's mom closer to the bank, when we slip.

Chris: Wow, this stuff is really thick. She's stuck again.

(Y/n): Koki, Jimmy, the cables!

The pair throw the cables to us, Chris and I attach them to the back of our suits.

(Y/n): Try again. PUSH! *strains*

Aviva puts the Createrra in reverse and pulls.

Chris: That's it.

Martin: We're moving again.

(Y/n): Don't let up! Go, go!

We keep moving the elephant with all our might until-

Martin: Yes! She's free!

(Y/n): Alright! Way to go everyone!

Chris: Aw, look at that.

Aviva: Thornsly and his mom are back together. Aw.

*Elephant herd trumpet loud*

Chris: Now that sounds like one happy herd of elephants.

(Y/n): I'd say that's Creature Mission accomplished.

Martin: Yup, Thornsly is reunited with his mom.

Chris: Living free and in the wild.

Aviva: Whew, what a day. I will never say 'What harm can he do?' about a baby elephant again.

(Y/n): Having Thornsly in the Tortuga was a good lesson wasn't it?

Wild Kratts Crew: Don't keep wild animals in your house.

(Y/n): And no matter how old an elephant is, their trunk is like having a whole hardware store on their face.

Chris: They can smell, touch and grab things.

Martin: Spray water, sand and mud.

Aviva: Drive Tortuga's.

Koki: Smash and trash them.

Aviva: Miniturize us.

Jimmy: And teleport sandwiches too.

*everyone laughs*

Jimmy: *stomach growls* Speaking of sandwiches, I'm starved. And now that Thornsly is busy drinking his mother's milk, I can finally have my lunch.

Jimmy is about to eat said sandwich until-

Thornsly: *grabs sandwich*

Jimmy: *begs* Thornsly. Please, tell me you're not gonna eat my last sandwich?

Thornsly: *stuffs sandwich into Jimmy's mouth*

Jimmy: *as everyone laughs* Thanks Thornsly, you're the best. *laughs along*

Timeskip Later that Night

(Y/n): Think I've had enough?

Aviva: Sorry, but your wound was almost at the septic stage, you're lucky Thornsly found that Cape Aloe when he did.

(Y/n): He didn't find it by accident.

Aviva: Huh?

(Y/n): Elephants have insanely good memories. When you showed the image of that cape aloe, Thornsly, remembered what it looked like, then he also remembered where he had last seen one.

Aviva: *gasp* He knew the aloe was there! No wonder he was constantly trying to leave. He knew he could help you. *groans* Can't believe I didn't see that.

(Y/n): When you've had an obsession with elephants as long as I have, you kinda get to know everything about them, and there's still a lot to learn. But that will have to wait until our next elephant creature adventure.

Aviva: *giggles* Alright, until then though, always do a check over in case you need medicine again, please?

(Y/n): For you, I'll do my best, Captain. *smiles*

Aviva: *blushes heavily* W-Well, um, g-goodnight, (Y/n).

Aviva went to her hammock rather quickly and I couldn't quite tell why, oh well.

(Y/n): Goodnight, Aviva.

(A/N): I don't know how many apologies I can say, but I am sorry for my tardiness. I am dealing life events and there's a new DLC for game I really like to play that I have been preparing for.

Anyways, I am back to writing not just this but also my other unfinished books so stay tuned for all. I hope you can forgive me and have a great day/night and I'll see you in the next one. PEACE OUT!!!
