Ellen - The Discussion
*Wow, It's really hard trying to re-write a romantic relationship into a platonic one. Ellen and Luke are now BESTIES!*
"If you stay calm, I can help you."
Ellen crosses her arms and stands up, not bothering to look at him.
"You must be glad you finally found me, Luke. God knows what they paid for you to turn me in. I just have to know, when did they turn you against me? How long exactly did you plan to stab me in the back?"
Luke places a hand on Ellen's shoulder, which she angrily shoves away. "I was never 'turned' Ellen, I was undercover. I'm sorry, but this was never about you. Lives are at stake here, and we have to make a few sacrifices to bring peace back. I promise, I'm not lying."
Finally, Ellen turns around to face him, now crying. She screams at him with heartbroken fury. "You told me that you would be there for me! You said that you would protect me, as I said I'd do the same for you! But you were lying this whole time?! You just played me, this whole time!"
"Like you've been playing all the men I've helped you rob." Ellen finally quiets down, still crying a little. "Ellen, I'm sorry. I'll be honest, I admired you from day one. You were one of those noble Robin Hood types. It's why I never tried to stop you. I hoped that someday after all this civil war mess was over we could both just go back to a normal life. Be friends anyway, despite our... side jobs."
Ellen starts to back away slowly into the darkness, away from the safety of the city lights. Luke follows her, not quite thinking. "I swear that despite my position, I did care about you. Through all this time, all I wanted to do was keep you safe. Ellen, please understand, as much as I want to protect you, lives depend on finishing what I began. Please, Ellen. Just take my hand and let me save you."
But as soon as Ellen saw that outstretched hand, she was reminded of the brutal knife to her heart that was Luke's betrayal. She stumbled backwards, once again screaming in anger, eyes filled with tears that would not stop.
"You actually expect me to believe you now?! As far as I know, everything you've ever said to me has been a lie! And every word you told me, about how you cared about me, how we were best friends, now every time I think about it, it breaks my heart in a new way! And fine, maybe I deserve that. But I really cared about you, and you ripped me apart!" Ellen takes a second to breathe, wiping the tears from her eyes, to which the only result is turning to screaming to simple "tearing up."
Luke reaches out for her again, when the pair hears a familiar chanting coming from all around them. The familiar eerie yet joyous chanting of "Doll-ay, Doll-ay, Doll-ay." Luke recoils his hand quickly, looking around in fear.
"No!"
Ellen's sadness quickly turns to confusion. "What?"
"It has to be them. You don't know what they'll do to me if they find me here." Luke turns around, searching for anyone else who may be around.
"Who?"
Luke turns around to face Ellen, giving a sort of whisper-shout. "The Voodoopunks!" But when he turns to face her, he sees a woman standing behind her. Ellen notices him looking over her shoulder and turns around to see a familiar face.
"Aunt Jane?"
Jane forcefully takes Luke's hand and shakes it. He tries to squirm away, but there are already two other people behind him. "Policeman, it's wonderful to finally meet you. I can see you've made my dear niece cry."
"You- you- your AUNT is a VOODOOPUNK?!" Luke shouts towards Ellen, who just stands still and silent, totally bewildered.
"High Priestess, actually, Policeman. But don't worry about that for now, because I've brought some friends to say hello. We're so glad that you've thought to pay us a visit. You see, we're all afraid to go up into the city, as we know you'll kill us in cold blood. But that's no problem now, because now you're on our turf. And because it's so rare that someone actually bothers to visit, the Voodoopunks request your presence at our soiree."
As the two other Voodoopunks gently nudge Luke forward, he looks to Ellen for help. Ellen goes to the side of her Aunt Jane, looking away from the man that was once her most trusted friend. Once Luke is gone, Jane pauses before hugging her niece. She pulls away slowly after a while.
"I'm sorry. I never wanted something like this to happen."
"I know. I should never have been so trusting. I should have known better. Now I've lost everything."
Jane kisses Ellen's forehead sweetly. "Even so, you will always have a home with me."
"Thank you, Aunt Jane. But for now, I just... I want to get this over with."
"Of course. Come, let me show you the soirees of the Voodoopunks."
