Ellen - The Bust

Ellen and Luke whisper to each other, making sure Ethan doesn't overhear.

"Have you got it?"

"Got it right here. Hang on, I need to go freshen up. Be back in a minute." Luke nods as Ellen head to the bathrooms. As soon as she closes the door behind her, she hears the loud slam of metal. Shocked, she peaks out the door through the keyhole. The front door has been barred and a large group of government soldiers are standing guard, armed with guns.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please keep calm as we adress you all." The man at the front scans the crowd, his eyes landing on Ethan. He points to him and the crowd parts. "That man is a rebel. Bring him to the front."

Before Ethan can even try to run, the crowd forces him to the front where he is forced onto his knees by two soldiers.

"Bet you regret helping out your buddy now, huh? 7285 isn't here to save you this time." The lead man says.

"His name is Mark. And at least he had the courage to stand up to you monsters."

"Soldiers, shoot him." Ethan scowls at the lead man before he is shot. Ellen gasps from inside the bathroom. She watches in horror as the soldiers look through Ethan's body. She cups the device in her hand, aware of what they are looking for.

"The thief got it before us." A soldier says. The lead man shouts to the panicked crowd. "There's a device we have been seeking. And we know that it is somewhere in this room. There is a thief among you tonight, and we are aware that she has beat us to it."

Ellen looks around. How did they know about her? For the time being, she had to get out. She spies a window above the toilet. Ellen climbs up and pulls herself through just before a soldier comes into the room looking for her.

"She's not here!" The soldier shouts.

"What do you mean she's gone?! Well find her! Go!"

Outside, Ellen runs for her dear life, as a bit of rain starts to pick up. Her dress wet, she pulls into an alleyway as soldiers begin to close in the area. An arm grabs her and she screams. Turning around, she sees a dark-haired woman shushing her.

"Aunt Jane?"

"Quick, get in." Jane whispers.

She sneaks Ellen into the building where she closes the door behind them.

"Aunt Jane, what are you doing here?"

"The cops are looking everywhere for you. You've become the most hunted person in the city." Jane says.

Ellen tries to play dumb. "Why? What's going on?"

"Ellen, I know. You've been busy with your life of thievery. I had my hunches, but now it's confirmed."

"How did you know?"

"Ellen, I've been in the resistance for a long time. My friends in the resistance caught wind of this little device called the MCG. They hired a thief to get it for them, and lo and behold, you show, all dolled up." Jane says.

"Aunt Jane, I'm sorry. I know you've raised me since my parents died, but so much has been going on. I got this gig, I've made a new friend, I've even changed my name. Lauren now."

Oh, good one, Ellen. Thank for bailing me out of that since I've been slipping up on your name.

"You're welcome, Mike."

"Yeah well, the cops are tearing apart your new life now. And if they catch you they'll kill you right in the streets. The only way this can go down is if we get you underground. Deliver the MCG to the facility, and we'll be able to protect you."

Ellen backs away from her aunt. "I don't care about your plan. I only care about Luke. When the cops came in he was stuck inside. If they find out who he is, he'll be beaten, tortured, killed... what's stopping me from trading this stupid thing to save his life?"

"Your friend is not important. We've worked for years to bring these men down, and you have the key right in your hand. Listen, I'll admit, your aunt has long since found religion. Under the streets, where I meet with my resistance friends? They're not just any resistance. We're known as Voodoopunks. I'm high priestess as of now, which means that if you get underground, we can help you."

"I... I'm sorry Aunt Jane. But I have to find Luke first."

"Wait, Ellen! Come back!" But it's too late. Ellen has already bolted out the door. She runs through the now pouring rain, back in the direction of the soiree, looking for her friend.

"Luke! Luke!"

"Lauren! I'm right here!" Luke calls to her, using her fake name in case someone is listening. They slip around the back of the building.

"How did you escape?"

"Same way you did. Do you still have it?"

Ellen pulls the precious device out of her purse. "It's right here. I know where to bring it. Then we can blow this town."

Ellen starts to leave, but Luke doesn't follow. Ellen turns around. "Luke?"

"On the day we come it's over." He speaks under his breath. Ellen's confusion suddenly turns to fear as the places click in her mind.

"No..."

Luke slowly pulls a gun out of his coat. He doesn't point it directly at Ellen, but he does raise it enough for her to get the idea.

"I can help you, if you just stay calm." He speaks slowly and calmly, noticing Ellen's increasingly panicked breathing and wide, fear-struck eyes. "There are bigger things here than you realize. I'm sorry, but this must be done."

"No, no, no!" She starts to shout. As she looks around, she sees several other policemen stationed in various places, hidden in the dark. All pointing guns at her.

"The party's over, Ellen. It's time to wake up, we have a war to win." Luke, trying to keep her still, grabs her wrist.

Ellen tries to get away, screaming. Luke futility tries to calm her down. "Ellen, if you run, these men will shoot you."

"This isn't real, this can't be happening! How did they turn you? How long since-"

Luke cuts her off. "Just take my hand, and I'll help you live."

But Ellen doesn't. Now crying, she instead bolts off in the other direction as the sound of gunfire sounds behind her. Luke hesitates, his finger shaking on the trigger, until another solider shouts to him.

"Remember what happened to 7285, Westaway!" With that painful threat shouted to him, Luke turns his head and shoots blindly at Ellen. But she is already long gone by this point. She runs through the city, crying and panting. Betrayed by the only friend she ever knew. Now, she only has one option left. Run.
