2 years ago - aka pre Gon, aka Nick time, aka Junior year, (they are now in their last year of senior year- I heard apperantly in most American systems the last two years are your senior year? Which makes sense kinda similar here I guess in highschool as well, but not exactly lol but yeah) So yeah they 16. AKA BACKSTORY TIME

Killua and Nick were cuddling on the couch as they watched Kogumi leave for her third date with Meruem. "They are so cute." Killua whispers to Nick. Nick grumbles and narrows his eyes feeling particularly protective of his sister. Killua rolls his eyes and kisses Nick's face all over. "Babe relax, she will be okay." Nick sighs but accepts the fate. And Killua was right for the most part that is. She was okay. Kogumi and Meruem became the IT couple at school, next to Killua and Nick that is. And they all hanged out together. A weird combination of a group sure but it worked. The Football players : Nick, Zushi, Knuckle, Leorio Mereum, Youpi and Pouf. The Cheerleader/ Softball player : Pitou. School council/ smartest kids in school: Killua, Kurapika and Ikalgo. The Artist/musician: Kogumi. It was a mixture of everything almost. And they worked. They hang out every lunch, every party. Were at every game, every cheer meet, every music performance, every debate, every mathathon, every art gallery. You name it. And they were there. They were inseparable. Until the party...

It was the end of football season, they have had the biggest winning streak in the history of the school, the celebrations and spirits were high. The party was at Ikalgo's place. His first and last party. Mereum and Pitou were the designated drivers of the two cars. And so the night began. The music was loud, the drinks were strong, the place was more then trashed. And Mereum was Challenged to a beer pong tournament. Kogumi at his side. No one else was in site at the moment so he went for it, Kogumi warned him against it, but he assured her he was fine. And so he played a round. And another round. And another round. Then he was playing Kings. Then another round of Beer Pong. He smoked a joint with Retz. And he was done for it. By the time it was 1am and people were passed out they finally left. Mereum insured he was fine to drive. Pitou drove ahead of them. Killua, Nick, Kogumi and Kurapika got into Mereum's car as arranged.

It happened so fast...

Mereum was dozing off the in the drivers seat. Killua and Nick were giggling at the back as Nick slurredly told jokes. Kurapika was video calling Leorio telling him to save him from the adorably gross two couples. Then Kogumi was yelling for Mereum to watch out. There was a flash. A very distinct scream heard. Everything seemed to slow down as everyone seemed to sober up fast. Mereum's eyes widened as he saw the trucks headlights, his head whips lightening fast in the direction of Kogumi. His hand automatically reaching out to give her extra protection. Another shrill scream heard as Killua, Nick and Kurapika seem to fly forward knocking their heads against the seats. Killua almost flying through the windshield, Leorio's voice ringing from the phone asking what's happening before the line cuts off, Nick grabbing Killua's waist bruisely hard to pull him back, causing his head to slap on the back seat. The car span, all their heads smashing against windows. Everyone seeming to black out, their hearing numb, as the car rolls into the trees, the cracked windshield allowing way for the branches to go through. Another scream heard as they slice through Kogumi's eyes.

Then silence.

Sirens.

Police cars.

Ambulances.

White bright lights.

Distant voices.

When Kurapika, Killua and Nick came to. They all had something bandaged feeling very lucky. In the triage room where they can all see each other. "Can you please tell us about our friends please." Killua asks hoarsely as he notices the clear shock and worry on Nick's face. "The driver Meruem is okay although his tox screen was way too high for someone his age he should be lucky he didn't have alcohol posioning. And he has a broken arm, in a cast. And is in the waiting room."

Killua was about to respond, to ask why. But Nick's hard voice beat him to it. "Why?" And then she explained about Kogumi. Her eyes were severely injured in the accident. She's still in surgery but the odds are slim. Nick stood up way too fast almost losing balance. "Sir please you all still have concussions." But Nick wasn't listening he was pissed. Pissed at Meruem. Nick ran straight to Mereum and grabbed his collar shirt. "How could you!?" He yells at him, Mereum quivers as he looks down. "I am sorry Nick- I just I was-"

"You were drunk! You were supposed to be the sober one! And now she is in surgery!" Mereum tried to say something but the words seemed to be caught his throat, Killua gently touches Nick's shoulder. "Nick, just let him go. Let's sit and wait to hear about Kogumi okay?" Nick scoffs and let's go off Mereum and sits five seats away from him, Killua and Kurapika by his side. Mereum threads his hands through his hair, his mind racing and his breathing ragged. Nick was right, Kogumi even warned him. Why did he have to drink. They sat for hours waiting and waiting. Seeing nurses, Doctors, patients and visitors walk in and out of the room. Everyone seeming to jerk everytime a doctor enters waiting for the bomb of truth. Nick's parents finally arrived at midnight, coming back from their trip to Italy early. They ran in so fast, panic clear on their faces. Nick ran to them embracing them in tight hugs. Nick's father. Ian glared briefly at Mereum but spoke no words.

At that point Kurapika was on the phone with Illumi explaining to him the situation so that he could cover for them and tell Kurapika's parents they were safe at Illumi's place. When the doctor finally came out asking for the Sinclair family. Everyone stood all at once waiting for the news. "Your daughter, Kogumi is okay. There were however some complications during the surgery. I am afraid. She will no longer be able to see." Everyone stood dead still. No one uttered a word as the Doctor looked at everyone with sympathy. "She's in ICU, recovering you can see her now, but I suggest letting her rest." Then all hell broke lose. Ian and Catherine broke down into tears, Nick cried into Killua's shoulders as Mereum seemed to be broken. "I am so sorry." Mereum whispers so softly. But those words seemed to hit a nerve.

"You!" Nick hissed he stormed striaght to Mereum. "You will never hurt her again. Do you understand? I won't let you." Mereum opens his mouth to respond, his facial expression seeming hopeless. "No! YOU WILL STAY AWAY FROM HER!" Nick shouted at the top of his lungs. Mereum shook his head tears rolling down his face. "Nick please-" Nick shook his head. "Leave." Nick said softly. But his voice hard. It wasn't a request. And so Mereum left.

And so did the Sinclairs. They left for Kogumi's recovery, for her protection and because the pain of what happened in this town was too much for them to bare. Killua, Ikalgo and Kurapika avoided Mereum them. Leorio, Knuckle and Zushi seemed to slowly pull away as well. Mereum never fully healed and let the pain turn him into a complete asshole. Something his entire group seemed to adopt and inhabit. And the rest was history.

-PRESENT DAY-

Mereum's world was changed twice in his life. The first time when he caused Kogumi to lose her sight. The second time. Was her return. Watching her walk through the halls of the school, Nick by her side. A walking stick in hand. Was surreal to him. When they walked past him, he felt the intense glare of Nick, but that's not what truly caught his attention it was the way Kogumi turned her body to face him, almost as if she could sense him...see him. His hand almost automatically reached out lingering in the air as she passed him. That's when Pitou trotted towards him. "Hey what's up with you? Are you still upset that Gon has opted to ignore us now? Look he made his choice-" Mereum quickly told Pitou to shut up. Because that was not it. Gon was right to leave them. He knew that. Heck he knew he became a dick he never wanted to be. But now she's back. And he wasn't sure what to do anymore. He felt stupid for the way he acted. The way he treated his old friends. All because of what? He wouldn't accept the blame? Wouldn't accept what happened. That night hit him in the face again today, and he couldn't deny it anymore. It happened. He lost her. And he must get her back.

Kurapika stood with his arms folded as he seemed to be analyzing Gon's every move. Every twitch of the eyebrow. Every breath. It was unsettling to Gon and it made him a nervous wreck. He shivered deciding that once he gets Killua back, he wouldn't dare get on Kurapika's bad side. "You say you want Killua back and you need my help. I will ask you this. Answer honestly and I will consider helping you." Gon gulps and nods. "Do you love him?" Gon's entire face seemed to turn red as he stutters. Kurapika smirks and nods. "Very well what's your plan to get Killua back?" Gon sighs relieved before scratching the back of his neck and chuckling nervously. "I don't know?"

Kurapika laughs and pushes off the wall. "You're telling me you haven't thought of a single idea?" Kurapika rose his perfect eyebrow in question and Gon bit his lip because he has thought of an idea, he just wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not. "I do- its just-"

"Let's hear it." Kurapika says cutting him off. Gon releases a breath and tells Kurapika the plan. Kurapika smirks and nods. "I like it. I will message Ikalgo and Zushi. We will make sure everything is set in motion." Gon smiles and crushes Kurapika in a hug, seeming to lift him off the ground. Kurapika rolls his eyes and hugs Gon back. "Okay put me down, I am still pissed at you." So Gon puts him down and Kurapika starts making his calls leaving Gon more hopeful then before.

A/n so there's the long awaited backstory. Next chapter we are back to Gon and Killua interacting! Good or bad. Hehe.
