Memory Lane
Killua wakes up feeling empty. However today isn't the same stinging pain as always because now he has an extra thing to mourn.
It's the 14 of April. The anniversary of the fire. The day their world collapsed. Killua sighs as he crawls out of bed, he doesn't bother showering as he trots down stairs. Killua finds Illumi in the kitchen, staring blankly at his coffee as he seems to stir it continuously. Today is the hardest on Illumi. Illumi constantly blames himself for this day. When the anniversary of it comes along, no one can so much as give him a word of affirmation. He won't believe it. Killua automatically hugs his older brother, who breaks down sobbing in his arms. Killua always found it unfair for Illumi to blame himself. The was nothing Illumi could do at the time. He was only sixteen when the incident occurred. There's only so much a teenager can do by himself.
Hisoka enters the kitchen with some comfort food. He hates seeing Illumi like this. He hates seeing any of the Zoldyck's like this, he is their rock on this day. And he will be as strong as he can. He will always ensure to be there for them. He joins the hug. Illumi exhales shakily and tightens the hug from his end. The memories flashing in his brain. Something he can't control. Something he feels controls him at times.
The house caught on fire, Mother and Father were trapped, they couldn't find an escape no matter how hard they tried. They had told Illumi to get the others out. To forget them and save his younger siblings. Illumi was a mess as he cried and panicked. He couldn't seem to breathe but told himself to push through it as he went to grab the twins who were only ten at the time. Carrying both of them out while sobbing. The twins crying and asking Illumi what's happening or why aren't mom and dad following. Illumi couldn't answer he refused to answer. He couldn't. Otherwise he would get choked up and not on the smoke. Illumi had made it for Killua next, once he gets Killua out. The firemen and policemen arrive, allowing Illumi to breathe. He had help. So he ran back in assured that he would be able to save everyone, only to be pulled back by the firemen, telling him to stay out here and they would go in. Telling Illumi he needs to stay with Killua and The twins. But when the screams started Illumi just had to rush in. Hearing Kalluto, Milluki and his own parents scream in horror, in agony, as they suffocated and were being burnt alive. It terrified him more then anything. Illumi had to save them. That's all he could think about. Illumi suffocates himself attempting to get to them. He had gotten burnt on the side of his rib. A simple scar now. A reminder of the event, it never allows him to forget. Not that he could even if he tried. The firemen had gotten him out in time. Just before the building collapsed before their eyes. When the Cops and social workers attempted to separate them, Illumi had gotten them and made a run for it. Getting on a bus. Essentially moving to where they were now. Illumi had gotten a job at sixteen, giving up on school for his siblings. They were staying in an abandon building at the time. Illumi was constantly giving ideas to the restaurant to better improve it. So it was no surpise when Illumi caught interest of a company. He was extremely smart and quick on his feet. They set him up as an intern at first but he quickly rose to the top. He became the CEO when he was 18. Got them a new house. He couldn't spend a lot of time with his family, feeling like crap. For not being there most of the time. It was also one of the reasons he didn't want to date Hisoka he only had a few nights with them already as it was. So when he turned 19, he negotiated with the board and managed to get more free time since they trusted him.
The twins trudge down stairs as they check the time. "We ready?" They whisper. Killua was not ready. Illumi was not ready. No one was. Since there were no remains from their actual family they made their own memorial spot somewhere in town that they always visit. These days were always just so stressful, and hard. Killua nodded anyways. But Hisoka shook his head. "All of you get washed up and ready. I will get everything ready. Okay?" He says sweetly before kissing the top of Illumi's forehead. We all slowly go upstairs to get ready.
Even showering feels like too much of a task today. Once Killua was done. He put on a baggy shirt and some sweat pants. He checks his phone, seeing some messages from the assfucks, and one from Kurapika. They all knew what this day meant for Killua, they never put a lot of pressure on him today and would simply ask if he was okay. And Pika would offer bringing him and snacks and food, which he would agree to after they visit their family memorial podium. Killua sent a thumbs up emoji. He glances at Gon's messages. And reads them but doesn't respond. It's just the same old crap.
He leaves his phone at home and trudges down the stairs again. They all pile into the car while Hisoka drives them to the spot. Once they get to their makeshift family burial, they all kinda sit around it in silence. Alluka and Nanika set up candles around the burial and lights them. Taking their time to honour their family.
Once they make it back. Every family member kinda goes their own way. Illumi walks to his room, hisoka following for comfort, the twins leave to their room. Killua trudges to his room. He smiles when he finds Kurapika on the bed. A bunch of fast food and snacks surrounding him. "Hey Kil. I got all your favourites." Pika whispers. Killua smiles and sniffles before breaking down, Kurapika hugging him tightly.
They spend the rest of the night just cuddled up, eating junk food.
