Part 3

Irene found her eyes flickering suspiciously through the members of the family. While they seemed harmless, their desire to enter the house so early in the morning made her a little uneasy.

"I'm sorry," She politely declined, "But my husband and daughter are actually asleep at the moment, and I think it's much too early to be having neighbors over." Her eyes shifted to the clock in the kitchen, and sure enough, the time was only 5:18.

Hoseok's smile didn't falter; rather, it stayed plastered to his face as he looked her directly in the eye. "That's okay," He assured her, "If we could, we'd love to come back later. Is there a time that would suit you?"

Irene felt highly uncomfortable in his unblinking gaze and even more so knowing that he was putting her on the spot to make a decision without Namjoon's input. However, after just moving there the night before, she didn't want to seem nasty and cause hot water between them and neighbours already. She calculated the time that she and Namjoon usually awoke by and estimated how many hours they would need to get ready and feel comfortable before inviting the neighbours in.

Her rough guess was 12pm, and she repeated it back to the man in front of her.

Her confirmation only seemed to make Hoseok's smile widen. "Fabulous." He exclaimed, "We'll be back here by 12pm sharp." He patted his wife's shoulder as if gesturing for her to leave before him and then he turned back to Irene. "My apology for any inconvenience we caused." He apologised, with his words rolling off his tongue in an oddly sly way. Irene's eyebrow cocked in caution, but the man made no further conversation as he turned to follow his wife back to their house.

Still a little puzzled by the occurrence, Irene closed the door and instinctively locked it. While she assumed the neighbors had no ill intention by being at the house so early, she could assume that they didn't have much social etiquette. She was glad she was still wearing her clothes from the day before; otherwise she would have been severely embarrassed.

Still pondering about the situation, she made her way back to the table to find that her coffee was pretty cold. Opting to ditch it and find something for breakfast instead, she headed to the kitchen and poured it down the sink, looking through the pantry for a cereal or toast to eat. It was then that footsteps echoed down the staircase beside her and her husband's form appeared in the kitchen. His almond eyes met hers with a look of confusion.

"Who was at the door?"

Irene gave him a curt reply, turning away from him and to the pantry again. "The neighbours."

This only seemed to confuse Namjoon more and his eyes darted towards the clock. "What did the neighbors want at 5 in the morning?" He brushed past her to the coffee machine and her mug from the sink to rewash.

Irene shrugged, "They wanted to meet us."

He pulled a dishtowel from the rack beside the sink to dry the mug. "Pretty early to be meeting neighbours, don't you think?"

"That's what I said to them." Irene pulled a large, red box of Kellogg's cereal from the shelf in the pantry; her eyes skimming over the bright title that let her know it was a wholegrain option. She placed it on the counter beside her.

Namjoon's eyebrow rose. "And?"

Irene grabbed a bowl from one of the cupboards, "I told them to come back at noon."

"Did they seem okay?"

She nodded, remembering the man's heart shaped grin, along with the quiet wife and daughter. While they seemed a little strange for coming so early with such cheer, she concluded that there was honestly nothing about them that seemed malicious or conniving. "It was just a man with a wife and a daughter. They were pretty quiet, and they apologised for coming so early."

Namjoon hummed in response, all the while shoving a small canister of coffee into the coffee machine and turning it on. "At least they're nice." He remarked sending her a side glance, "Unlike the neighbours in New York."

Irene scoffed indignantly, "At least the neighbours in New York weren't on your doorstep at 5 in the morning asking to come in for a chat."

In response, Namjoon simply rolled his eyes, knowing that his wife would defend New York City with her every breath and against every argument. When it came to her hometown, he just couldn't win.

It was not long after that Lily awoke from her slumber and ran into the kitchen to joyously proclaim each of her new doll's names to her parents. Namjoon took the rest of the items out of the car and Irene tried to get the place looking as neat as she could for the guests.

At 12pm precisely, a ding of the doorbell resonated through the house. Irene and Namjoon exchanged glances, and seeing as how his wife was busy doing the finishing touches of cleaning at the time, Namjoon decided he would answer the door.

He quickly took a glance into the peephole and took notice of the three people standing in his doorway – a man, a woman, and a child, just as Irene had said. Namjoon swiftly unlocked the door and opened it to reveal the trio.

The first person to notice him was the man, who, upon seeing his face, grinned cheerily. "Hello there!" He greeted.

Namjoon returned the greeting just as heartily with a smile so wide his dimples showed through his skin. "Hello," He extended a large hand to the shorter male who shook it eagerly. "I'm Kim Namjoon."

"Jung Hoseok." The other man beamed. Despite their jolly greeting, Namjoon still found himself instinctively sizing the man up and had no clue why. He didn't seem to be much of a threat. He stood at an easy 5'10 in height and possessed a rather slim build, much smaller than Namjoon's burlier one. His raven hair was neatly combed and he and his other family members seemed rather well dressed.

His eyes scanned along his wife's face. She was an attractive Korean woman in her mid-30s, with the effortless porcelain skin and large glasses around her doe like eyes. Her small, red lips curled up into an even smaller smile and Namjoon couldn't help but think she looked as if she had been forced to come. It was the same for the much smaller daughter who, for the most part, hung out behind her father and watched butterflies and birds roam around the driveway.

Namjoon's eyes finally caught sight of the cookies in the man's wife's hands and that was all it took for him to open the door wider. Cookies had always been his weakness as he was a sucker for small desert like treats. He allowed the family in, and almost instantly their eyes were darting around the house and taking in the sight of all the furniture.

"This is a little bit different to our house's layout." Hoseok commented as he led his daughter and wife in. "I like the style you have going on here." He gestured with his eyes to the neat, modern design of the kitchen. Namjoon only nodded in response and followed them to the table where Irene sat.

Her eyes flickered up when she noticed them approach and she gave each of them a warm smile. While gesturing to a packet of biscuits she had found in the cupboard she apologised for not having anything made up for them to eat. Her apology was heartily received as Hoseok comfortably took a seat along his more robotic wife and daughter.

Seeing that the daughter looked bored out of her mind, Irene called out for Lily, who came dashing out of her obnoxiously pink bedroom and into the dining room. "Yes?" The little girl asked as she came panting into the room, her eyes scrutinizing each of the guests closely.

"Lily," Irene began, "this is Mr and Mrs Jung and their daughter...?"

"Mi-Cha." Hoseok intercepted, noticing her difficulty in remembering the girl's name. His gaze however, was stuck on Lily. It wasn't in a creepy perverted way, but rather, to Irene it seemed he was just curious to see what the girl looked like – being that she was half Korean and half Hispanic.

"Mi-Cha." Irene corrected herself before continuing with a commanding look, "Would you please take Mi-Cha and show her your room?"

Lily nodded in response, rather pleased to have someone to play with. Mi-Cha on the other hand sent a questioning look to her father, which didn't go unnoticed by Irene. Hoseok noticed the little girl looking at him for an answer and nodded his head. Within a second, the girl was off her chair and following Lily to her room.

By this point, Hoseok had already turned to Namjoon and Irene with another animated smile. "So, we noticed you just got here yesterday. Where are you two from?"

"New York." Irene was quick to answer, and it got her a scowl from Namjoon, who quickly interjected.

"We just came from New York - which is her hometown, but I was brought up here." He clarified to the couple across the table. Hoseok's eyebrows rose in surprise but quickly dropped. "Are you planning on staying here long?" He asked, "Do you have any family here?"

Namjoon nodded before explaining that his parents lived close by and that they weren't sure how long they were planning to stay. Hoseok didn't seem too interested to hear any of that, but he was quick to change the subject.

"Were you told about the guy that lived here before you?"
