Part 3: Under The Surface

Mystery Person (L) 2 POV:

I carry R to safety as I'd done countless times before. We made code names that we called each other; she goes by R and I go by L. It was a letter of our names that we thought separated us from the rest.

"Thank you for that show baby, I loved it." I knew she'd be absolutely elated to see the fight between the pathetic so-called couple. I was happy to see it because I needed her to be motivated. I'd started to set the whole plan in motion and there was no going back now, I needed her focused and dedicated. I saved her and brought her into my life and planned for this moment and even though I had to admit I'd grown accustomed to her presence, I needed her to fulfill her part of plan. I didn't have the luxury of falling in love and being out in the open like Blade, but I aimed to change that. I was fighting for my independence and to get my power back. After Blade was gone, I could be my true evil self without anyone standing in my way. He may think he's gotten away with messing with me but he hasn't. Nobody stands in my way and lives to tell the tale.

I guess I'd been silent for awhile because R grabs my arm, trying to recapture my attention. "L, what's on that magnificent mind of yours?"

"Nothing to worry about my dear, I'm just thinking about the future, our future." I look into her hazel eyes and trialed my eyes along down her long silky red hair. She was beautiful no doubt, a rare beauty. Learning how immaculate she is was just a bonus after I saved her.

She nods. "Smasher is in some serious trouble with that hideous woman, they basically broke up." The excitement radiates off of her.

"I'm glad you enjoyed the display I created for you, but remember who our first target is, Amaya." I refocus her. She needs to move Smasher out of her mind for now, thoughts of him will only hold her back.

She held my gaze, her eyes full of interest. "What do you plan to do to her?"

My fingers tingle with anticipation. "We need her for leverage." I begin to walk back and forth. "Lucky for her, she's more valuable alive than dead to us right now. We'll spare her pathetic life for a small time as long as she's useful to us."

"Ooh, what are you suggesting?" R stares at me giddily. This was her life as well as mine. Revenge is what kept me going.

I take a climatic pause before I speak again. "I'm going to kidnap the girl." I can practically hear the dramatic music as thunder sounded in the distance. "She will be ours by tomorrow, the rest of our enemies will follow shortly."

She claps her hands together excitedly. "Your a genius my love!"

The way R hyped me up was powerful, I felt like the most important person on the planet. It was one of the reasons I kept her around. Her powers and bedroom skills were definitely factors too though. "I must go, I have a letter to write, but I'll come back to you soon." I pulled her into a brief kiss before I headed to my layer.

I pick up a red ink pen and blank piece of paper. These poor, pathetic fools had no idea what was coming their way. They didn't know anything about this world, the world I lived in but they would shortly learn what it was like to be me. I was all too confident they couldn't handle it. I tapped the pen on my desk as I worked to conjure up the right words for the message I would send Amaya. It was minutes before my twisted brain formed the encrypted note:

Amaya,
I know all about your boyfriend and his secrets. He is not who you think. He will die if you don't meet with me. I will be at 1852 Willow Street in the abandoned building across from the GetGo gas station at 8pm tomorrow and so will you or your beloved boyfriend will get what he deserves. If you tell him or anyone else I will kill him myself.

P.S. Bring this note with you.
-L

I fold the letter neatly and placed it  into a blank envelope. I walk downstairs, put my sunglasses on and grab my coat, rushing out the door. "R, I'm leaving. Do not leave this building until I get back, things are about to go down."

She is in front of me, rubbing her hands together. "Ooh, I can't wait. I'll be here when you get back, prepared for your next order."

R is obedient almost to a fault, making my life so much easier. She had been dying for someone to grab her and pull her into the darkness she'd be dreaming of. We we're navigating through the darkness together like professionals. It was proof that it was where we belonged. We kissed goodbye and I was off to track down Amaya and plant the note. Little did she know that her life was going to change within the hour. It made me feel powerful to be the one in charge of changing her life.

I get into my black Subaru and went to the college Amaya attended. I drive way faster than what's safe, feeling invincible. In about fifteen minutes I pull next to her vehicle, watching her get out with her books. She doesn't even spare me a passing glance as she walks quickly onto the campus. I was so relieved Blade hadn't driven her the way he sometimes did. Luck had been on my side these days. When she was out of view, I got out of my car, tucking my letter into my coat. I looked around before approaching her vehicle, careful to avoid everyone's prying eyes. When I was sure no one was watching, I tucked the note into her windshield wipers. I moved quickly back to my car, instantly starting my car and peeling out. Part two of my mission had officially commenced.

I dialed R's burner phone number. She picks up on the first ring as she always did. "What's up?" She says, her voice even.

"Nothing, I pick up our prisoner tomorrow, we need to make sure we have somewhere secure to keep her for the time being. I need you to prepare that while I watch the girl."

I hear moving as she speaks. "I'm on it. It'll be ready when you get back."

I hang up, pleased. I didn't tell her thank you, not because I wasn't appreciative of her service but because it was a sign of weakness. I couldn't show her I needed her, then I was weak, something I could never be. If you need someone that implies that you can't do it on your own. As much as I hated to admit it though, I needed her. It was the first time I needed anyone and it frightened me. I wouldn't have been able to do any of this, come this close to my goal if she wasn't here beside me. I decided maybe I'd keep her around, even after I'd completed my mission.

I park my car a block off her campus. I grab my binoculars and begin my climb up the hill next to the campus she's at. After two hours of waiting, I watched as she made it to her car. She opened her door and throws her book bag onto the passenger seat. She started the car up and immediately turns it back off, jumping out. I hold the binoculars tightly as I see her walking to the front of the car. This is it. She squints at the envelope, opens it and reads it slowly. I watch as her eyes get wide after she processes what she just read. I am enraged when she crumbles the note up and throws it on the ground, rolling her eyes and getting into her car. I want to scream but I don't want to draw attention to myself. I keep my eyes narrowed on my target as she reluctantly gets back out of her car, picking up the note like it's poisonous and crawls into her car once again. This girl certainly knows how to put on a show. There's a fire in her I didn't expect and will have to be weary of. She drives off, leaving me satisfied. I think it worked. Now, we wait. I drive back to the abandoned building we were staying at. We probably won't be here long, it was about time for another location switch. When you're on the run, living under fake aliases, you couldn't stay in one place for too long. There was nowhere to call home, so you had to find a home within yourself.

When I enter I smell something sweet. "R, baby I'm back."

She runs into the room, her eyes shining. "How'd it go? You got her didn't you?"

"I got her." I stepped closer to her. "What's that smell?"

R throws her hands up in air. "I knew you would, you never fail!" She speaks as she walks out of the room. "That's why I made a cake to celebrate your accomplishments." She carried a delicious looking cake with the letters L &R. It looked a cake we'd have at our wedding if getting married was a reality for us.

I was impressed and flattered but I couldn't afford to go soft, this was time I had to be most brutal. "How did manage to find time to bake while you were preparing the dungeon?" I ask, partly accusatory, partly impressed.

She sat the cake down carefully and leaned against the table. "Don't worry, the dungeon is all taken care of, you can see for yourself later." She touched the cake gently and licked the icing off her finger as she looked at me. "You are allowed to take one night off, you've worked so hard."

She is so good with words that it convinces me. I sigh. "One slice of cake then we must talk through the details of tomorrow."

We sit down and enjoy the delicious cake she made. It was nice to feel accomplished and appreciated. As hard and dangerous as it was for me to admit, it was really nice to sit down and talk with R. I'd never sat down and ate with anyone at a diner table. I now saw what the appeal was. When I started thinking too hard I knew it was time to redirect ourselves. We stayed up late breaking down every single detail of the ransom we were carrying out the next day.

The next night I waited down in the entryway, prepared as I could be. At exactly 8pm, I heard a knock on the door. "Hello?" Amaya asks, unsure.

"Come in." I respond.

The door creaks open, she looks around cautiously. "I got your letter. I came here to find out what you want from me."

As she is looking in the other direction I sneak up behind her and grab her, holding her arms behind her back. She gasps then starts kicking and scratching to free herself. She doesn't break through but she manages to leave a few marks. She's a feisty one.

"Let's go of me, you creep!" She screams at the top of her lungs as she struggles.

I drag her down into the dungeon. "Sorry, no can do princess."

"Don't call me that." She spits angrily.

I force her to sit into a chair and start tying a rope tightly around her. "You aren't really in the position to make demands princess."

I wasn't expecting to show her my face but she was a scrappy one and managed to rip my mask off. When she sees my face she freaks out. "You sent the letter? What is this? What are you doing?"

Instead of answering her I take a cloth out of my pocket and cover her mouth, rendering her unconscious.
