Catherina

The minute I shoved a spoonful of ice cream in my mouth, the doorbell rang. I groaned aloud and plodded to the front door. Too lazy to peek at who it was, I yanked the door open. Sarah's bright smile did nothing to lift my spirit. Instead of greeting her with a smile, I pivoted on my heels and headed back to the television.

Shuffling, and then footsteps followed me.

I flopped down on the couch and resumed my movie. Sarah paused at the head of the couch with a frown. "So, we're depressed. Why?"

I picked up the ice cream and a bag of lays, stuffing my mouth full.

Sarah settled on the couch and scooted closer to me. The side of my face burned from her pointed stare. Her head turned from left to right. "Where's Greek God?"

My heart sank. Another spoonful of ice cream filled my mouth. It took me a whole minute to formulate an answer without a sob. "He's gone. Apparently, Miss Hooks is sick, so he hasn't been around lately." A shaky laugh filled the room. "I can't tell when last I've seen him."

Well, I could. It was Friday night. Three nights ago.

"Huh! That bitch!" Sarah grabbed the bowl of ice cream from my grasp and stuffed her mouth filled with chips and ice cream.

"That was my exact words," I agreed. "Who the hell told her she could get sick? And, most importantly, why now?"

Sighs floated around the room. The playing movie was forgotten.

"You want me to hire someone to kill her?"

Maybe. Yes. Even though my heart screamed those words, my brain knew better.

"No, even if she's gone someone else will take her place." I eyed my black polished fingernails. "Someone always takes the space."

Another round of sighs filled my ears. Sarah handed me the ice cream and I gobbled up two spoons full.

"So, what are we going to do now?" she murmured.

I straightened with a lung full of air. When I exhaled my next words sounded chirpy. "I met someone."

Sarah shot up. "You serious?"

My lips curled. "Yep."

She scooted closer. "Is he hot? Does he go to UCLA?"

My teeth sank into my bottom lip, preventing the laughter from escaping. I hadn't learned much about Adrian. Heck, I only knew his name. If it was his name.

"No, he didn't look like the school type." He did mention how grateful he was to pass through roommates, so he was not a college student. Maybe. "We're going on a date this Friday."

"And?" Sarah waved her hand, beckoning for me to continue.

"I don't know what else you want me to say."

She took a bite off a chip. "Why do I feel like you're going to back out of this date?"

I shook my head. "No, but I wanted to tell Derek about it." The no secrets rule also applied to me. Truthful no matter what. Though we agreed to the rule years ago, he stuck by it and so should I.

"Why?" An eyebrow was arched. "Don't get me wrong, I adore Derek, but he's not here. He's with his cougar. So, why should you cancel your date because he's not here to hear your plans?"

I nibbled my bottom lip. "I never said I was going to cancel."

"No, but you were thinking about doing it." Sarah enveloped her hands in mine. "Look, I get where you're coming from. Derek is your best friend and you love him. But, sometimes we have to put love aside and do what's best for us."

As much as I wanted to heed to Sarah's words, my heart spoke a different tune. Yes, going out on this date would help take my mind off things with Derek. Hell, it was the reason I was going. However, I wanted Derek to be okay with it. A part of me knew he would disagree and maybe it was the reason why I wanted him to know. Maybe I was scared. Liking someone else meant giving up on Derek. And, I wasn't ready for that.

Sarah jumped to her feet. "Tell you what. You're going through a crisis, so this calls for a make-over session."

A groan ripped from my throat. "No, I'm watching tv."

Her head shook from left to right. "Nope! We're getting a makeover and then we're going out."

Before I had a chance to say anything else she shut the tv off and dragged me from the couch.

"Maybe we can brighten the lavender in your hair." She rolled a few strands of my hair between her thumb and index finger. Disgust imprinted on her face. "When last have you even treated your hair?"

I slapped her hand away and grabbed my ice cream.

She threw her hands in the air. "If you're not taking care of yourself how are you going to expect to keep Greek God interested? He's bound to stray if the grass looks greener over the neighboring yard. No wonder the cougar has all his attention."

I frowned and patted my hair.

So, I hadn't done much to it in a while, but I have been busy. It didn't mean I was neglecting myself. Did it?

Sarah narrowed her eyes at me. "Ugh, come on."

I allowed her to drag me up the stairs. "Is that why you're always doing something with your hair? Is it to keep Ryan from looking over the neighboring lane?"

She rolled hers. "As if. Have you met me? I'm a walking, talking crisis. Makeovers live for me."

I couldn't even help myself when loud laughter shook my body.
