Treasure hunt

It has been a week and a couple of days since then and LA has gone crazy. Why? Well, a well-known author has decided to host an LA-wide treasure hunt based on clues from his books. Of course, that means idiots are a common sight. At least I know that I am earning my time off. I just hope that no one is taking it seriously enough to risk their lives. Knowing what Money makes people do that would not be happening. As if on cue the signal bell goes. With that, we spring into action. So much for peace and quiet. After what feels like an eternity we are about to arrive at the scene. Right now we are getting our report from Maddie.

"Rangers think the bottle may have come from the headwaters of the creak south by southwest of your position. Near the rocks," Maddie reports to the rescue helicopter. That will be a bit of a hike.

"Copy that," The pilot announces. It doesn't take long for us to reach the starting point. Some of the ragers are already there. They are preparing as well. As soon as the ambulance comes to a stop I leap out and join the others.

"That's eight thousand acres to search. we are going to be here for a while," I remarked. The good thing is we have the rescue helicopter out. That will make our search easier.

"Are they sure someone is even up there? That bottle could have been floating up there for months," Buck asks the million-dollar question.

"Which means our search and rescue will become a search and recovery," Hen completes his thought. The thing is a part of me remains hopeful that we can find our victim alive.

"The note was written on a receipt. Rangers checked the date. It was from five days ago," Bobby confirms the timeline with us.

"I sure hope it wasn't their last meal," Buck remarks as the helicopter pilot brings the helicopter in to land

"We see you, Captain Nash. We are coming in now," The pilot acknowledges as he skillfully lands the helicopter. It will always be a sight to see.

"Copy that," Bobby responds. With that out of the way, Bobby turns his attention to us.

"Ok Ella, Eddie, gear up you're going with them," Bobby distributes his orders. I quickly let Eddie know that he is going to be the one rappelling down. Normally I wouldn't mind being harnessed up and lowered down but since the last time I was in a helicopter I'd rather stay in said helicopter. With a few swift movements, I grab the medical kit and the life pack. I take a deep breath as I make the mad dash to the helicopter. Once we are airborne the search finally begins. As I double-check Eddie's safety harness I listen in on the radio chatter.

"Ok, the first quadrant is right over that ridge. Head up to the devil's point. A lot of hikers get stuck up there," Bobby orders. I turn my attention to the scenery outside the window.

"Copy that, Cap," I acknowledge.

"Hey Eddie there is a river. I'm pretty sure that's where they threw the bottle in," I say as I spot a small river.

"I think I see something," Eddie adds as a bright green tent comes into view.

"Ok, we've got him. Let's get into a hover position," I order. Thankfully it doesn't take long for the helicopter to get into the appropriate position. As soon as Eddie and I have the door open I notice that there is the slightest possibility that he is dehydrated.

"He might need this," I say as I pass a spare water bottle to him.

"Ready?" Now for the hard part. Watching someone jump out of a perfectly good helicopter. Admittedly it is so Eddie can do his job.

"Piece of cake," Eddie confirms like a madman. With that, I get to work on helping Eddie down as the pilot makes the customary announcement. After what feels like an eternity Eddie is finally on the ground and the pilot gives the announcement that I needed.

"Rescuer on the ground," The pilot confirms. After a minute of radio silence the radio crackles to life with Eddie's voice.

"Ella prep fluids. Our guy is going to need them," Eddie says. It doesn't take long for Eddie to give me the signal to lift him up.

"That's our cue. Hold steady. I'm bringing him up," I remarked. After a few moments, Eddie and the victim are on board. We soon get the victim comfortable. Now that he is comfortable I get to work on getting him hydrated. To be honest I am impressed that he was even conscious. After a few minutes the helicopter pilot comes in to land. As soon as it does Buck and Bobby come to join us.

"Cap, be careful. He's kind of delirious. He's been out there awhile," I give him my report as Bobby and Buck help him onto the stretcher.

"He said he got injured three days ago," Eddie adds.

"I'm fine. I just want to know when I can get back up there," The man remarks before going on a rant as to why he was at the devil's point. Of course, it has to do with the treasure. What is surprising is that the others didn't know about it. As soon as we make it back to the firehouse we make a beeline for the tv. Bobby turns it on to find a news report about the reason why the treasure hunt is a big deal. Despite having work to do everyone else is glued to the tv. Since I want nothing to do with it I excuse myself. It will be a wild goose chase. As soon as I am done I rejoin the others to find them buried on their phones. They are reading what I assume to be the clues.

"It's terrible," Howie makes a comment after reading his part.

"It's less of a poem and more of a riddle," Bobby counters after reading his part.

"It sounds terrible either way," I chime in. I am one hundred per cent convinced that it is a wild goose chase. After some back and forth it finally gets to Buck. He seems just as excited as ever.

"A real-life treasure hunt. Wouldn't it be-,"

"Dangerous" Bobby cuts him off.

"Reckless," I add.

"Stupid," Eddie adds as well.

"Probably not even real," Howie hammers the final nail in the coffin.

"But what if it is? Wouldn't it be cool to find it?" Buck counters as he looks in my direction. I discreetly shake my head. I know exactly what he is thinking and the answer is no. As the week goes on things start to get worse. Unfortunately, Buck has managed to convince me that maybe the five million is a good idea given the fact that we will be getting married. Right now Buck, Eddie and I are looking over a map.

"Honestly if it was real we would have found it by now. We have crossed off most of the places in downtown Los Angeles," Even though Buck managed to convince me to join him I am still sceptical.

"Maybe it's not in the downtown area. I've been doing some research into Willow trees.," Eddier confirms.

"I've asked Daniel and Maddie. They have confirmed that a majority of calls that are connected to the treasure hunt are focused in the downtown area. In fact, the call centre has a betting pool," I counter before sighing.

"I know someone who can help us," Buck remarks as he turns his attention to the map that has our data.

It is the day after and I am watching as Buck and Eddie try to convince the probie to join our group. It is proving to be interesting.

"I thought you weren't interested in the treasure hunt," Hen pulls me out of my thoughts.

"Honestly I am doing it because Buck won't let go. He has got it in his head that if we get to the treasure before anyone else we will be doing a service to the city. Believe me, I tried to talk him out of it but it's Buck we are talking about," I explained the situation to Hen. After some comments from her I turned my attention to getting the inventory done. It doesn't take long for disaster to strike. The signal bell goes. We soon find ourselves in a park. As soon as I leave the ambulance I notice our victim writhing around in pain.

"It looks like he stepped into a big colony of fire ants," Bobby announces.

"Let's hope he's not allergic," Hen remarks

"Or a good guesser," I add. He clearly isn't as the author wouldn't be dumb enough to hurt people over it. After some comments from Buck and Eddie, we finally have the ants off of the man. Thankfully it doesn't take long for Hen and I to do our work. Thankfully it is an easy job.

It has been a couple of days since then and honestly, I am starting to think the author managed to jinx us. If it weren't for the fact that he was dead I would strangle him myself. As soon as the thought crosses my mind the signal bell goes. After seven minutes of travelling, we make it to a camping ground.

"The roof of a septic tank rusted through. A woman has been stuck down there for seven minutes. A tank like that is likely full of methane. We are going to need some breathable air down there," Bobby fills us in as we head to the location. After getting the remaining civilians out of the way we get to work.

"OK, Keisha, I am going to lower a mask for you. I'm going to need you to put it on for me," I say before she nods. With a few movements, I get the mask low enough for her to grab.

"She's already showing signs of hypoxia, Cap. We gotta get her out of there before she has permanent neurological damage," Hen confirms our worst fear.

"OK. Eddie, I want you to extend the aerial ladder over the hole. We will lower Buck down and he will pull her out," Bobby distributes his orders.

"Why me?" Buck muses.

"Well I did the special rescue last time," I responded as I stepped back. The thing is the smell is getting to me. Normally it wouldn't be a problem but the smell is particularly bad. With that, I help Buck get suited. Thankfully it doesn't take us long to get ready. With that, Eddie lowers Buck in. As soon as he is in the tank disaster strikes.

"Keisha! She's drowning. She's gone under. I can't see her. Get me down there now!" all I can hear is Buck panicking. Hopefully, he can get down there quick enough.

"Eddie, drop him, drop him," Bobby jumps to the rescue. As soon as Bobby gives the order Eddie jumps into action. I soon hear splashing which can only mean one thing. Buck has hit the water. After the briefest of pauses, Buck finally gives us the go-ahead to lift him back up. After a few minutes of preparation, the victim is ready for transport.

"I'm sorry we couldn't find the five mil, babe," The man apologised. He is going to need to do more than apologising.

"I don't need the money. I just need you. So whatever you are waiting for, You don't have to wait anymore. The answer is yes," the woman responds. She sounds delirious. It could just be the hypoxia talking.

"Uh...yes to what?" The man is confused. Honestly, I am too. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

"Yes, I will marry you. We can settle down and start a new adventure with a family," The woman explains.

"Oh... Babe, uh... I thought you knew," The man replies before going on a rant about how he is married. As soon as the man is done the woman throws the man out. I think he is lucky that she couldn't throw him out physically.

It is the morning after and I am in a good mood. Why? Well in the chaos of the treasure hunt I forgot that today was Buck and I's last shift before the big day.

"Someone's in a good mood," Eddie remarks as we grab a few things from our lockers.

"Well I realised that this shift is my last before the big day so I hope this treasure hunt blows over soon," I explain as I close my locker.

"I don't know...," Eddie starts his thought but he soon trails off. To be honest I still feel that this treasure hunt is a wild goose chase. As nice as five million dollars sounds there is no way it is real. It has been a few hours since then and unfortunately, Athena delivered some bad news that only confirmed my belief. Unfortunately, Buck is not happy about it.

"I really thought we could find it," Buck muses as he turns his attention to the map that we made.

"Well, we still can. It just means we will be giving the idiot his ending," I reply. The thing is even though I knew it was a goose chase something tells me that the story isn't over yet. I find myself staring at the map. Maybe there is more to the poem/riddle clue than meets the eye. After an eternity I have an idea that might work.

"Buck, I think I know where the treasure is," I announce.

"Let's get there before the others figure it out," I say as I grab my medkit. Call me paranoid but if there is anything that his treasure hunt has taught me is the fact that anything can go wrong. Buck also grabs some tools that could help. Thankfully it doesn't take us long to reach the location. There is just one problem Eddie and Hen are already there.

"What are you two doing here?" I ask as we head to the bridge.

"Don't ask," Hen replies.

"Or a trustworthy person," I catch the last of Bobby's response to whatever Athena said before.

"He's not the only one," Hen grabs their attention. After some back and forth we have agreed to split it evenly between us. With that out of the way, we head to the bridge. Now for the hard part. Finding exactly where the treasure is. After further discussion, Athena and I noticed some movement.

"Or maybe we will find someone else already there, beating us to it," Athena reads my mind. I soon recognised the man to be our Probie.

"Isn't that the probie?" I am confused as to how he beat us to it. I will have to ask later as we have a bigger problem. Thankfully he brought the chest to us.

"Ravi why don't you do the honours since you were the one that found it," Bobby says before Ravi bends down. After some remarks, Ravi opens the chest to find it empty. See I knew it was a goose chase.

"You have got to be kidding me," Hen speaks up.

"I think we are going to have to say a word to Mr Harcourt," Athena responds. The next thing I know we are on our way to the author's house. Since this is dumb I've decided to keep my distance. After what feels like an eternity the police show up. After a few minutes of waiting the others are finally cleared of any crimes. It is the day after and Athena is hosting lunch for us so we can work out the missing piece.

"I mean why bury any treasure at all?" Hen asks the obvious question. Athena goes on to explain that there was treasure however Mr. Harcourt's assistant went back to collect his share of the will. At least I now have a chance to relax before my big day. The good thing is the rest of LA can breathe a big sigh of relief now that it is over.
