Ella begins (Part 1)

A/N There will be a lot of time skips in this chapter

It is the end of the shift and despite the fact that I am tired I have decided to go out with my brother, Gavin, Hen, Buck and Eddie. We are at one of the more popular spots. It is a little busier than I would have liked but it doesn't matter. It just means that we'll have to be careful when we leave.

"So Gavin, why don't you tell us a bit about yourself," Eddie remarks as he passes our respective drinks. I find myself subtly nodding at Gavin. He is not exactly the best at talking to people. I can't blame him after all ASD makes communicating harder for him.

"I'm a structural engineer. There really isn't much to talk about in regard to my job. I'm just a glorified editor. Anyway, what happened to your wrist, Ella?" Gavin deflects the attention to me. It is the classic sign that he is not really in the mood to be the centre of attention. Again I can't blame him.

"Cliffside rescue gone wrong. I already told you," I respond. I notice Gavin wince. I get a giggle out of that reaction. Unlike me he has no interest in the action that happens so I spare him the details.

"Eddie, why don't you tell us how you became a firefighter?" I turn my attention to Eddie. I want to know more about the new guy since my life might be in his hands one day.

"no, you first," Eddie counters. Smart. I notice that Buck's face has perked up. To be honest, Buck doesn't know my back story yet. Which is odd considering the fact that we have been working together for a couple of years now.

"Are you all right with me telling them, Gavin? "I ask. Since it is a sensitive story for Gavin I don't want to tell it without his permission.

"Go for it," Gavin responds. With his permission, I get to work on telling the story of how I joined station 118.

Right now I am struggling to concentrate. I have a lot of work to do. I am currently trying to get through my last year of Med School. It turns out that I have overestimated how hard it really is. Not that it matters as I choose Med School. To be honest I am thinking of becoming a paramedic so I can still use my medical knowledge to do some good. It is something that I have been wrestling with for the past few months. I put my pen down as my nose is hit by the smell of one of my favourite foods.

"dinner's ready," My dad calls out. Finally, I am quick to join him in the dining room. The table is adorned with food.

"How's the study going?" Gavin asks.

"It's going so badly that I think I'm going to flunk Med School and become a paramedic. Just so long as you're happy with that Dad," I responded. Thankfully My Dad seems to consider the idea.

"Do whatever makes you happy. Just don't join me at station 110," My Dad gives me the go-ahead. With that out of the way, we tuck in. It is the day after and I am heading to the campus for one of my practical lessons. Time seems to slow down as the car a couple of cars down from me gets sideswiped. I pull over since there is nowhere for me to go. I notice that one of the passengers has been thrown from the car. My medical training kicks in as I make a beeline for the woman.

"Ok I have to apply pressure to the laceration," I mutter as I psych myself up. The woman is in a bad way. That makes sense. I grab a handful of gauze from my first aid kit. I use it to apply pressure to the wound. Now for the hard part. Waiting. As soon as the paramedics arrive I yell to get their attention.

"Over here," I yell as loud as I can.

"OK, ma'am we've got it from here," The paramedic announces as he joins me alongside the woman. With that out of the way I leave. After a six-hour long day at med school, I am finally home. I flop on the couch. Time for the daily debrief. It is something that my dad started one day when he is not on duty.

"Hey Dad you will never believe what happened to me," I beat him to the punch.

"I don't know. Tell me," my dad responds while skillfully preparing dinner.

"There was a three-way collision and I ended up helping and I told Doctor Smith I quit Med school to become a paramedic," I give my dad the day's brief. I look over my shoulder to find my dad with a proud smile on his face.

"What was his reaction?" Gavin asks as he sits down next to me. He looks a little annoyed. I can understand why. He is in the middle of his first year as an engineering student.

"He was surprisingly ok with it, how was your day Gavin?" I turn my attention to him.

"Long and boring. It is a lot of the same at this point," Gavin says.

"When will you start at the academy?" My dad jumps in.

"Tomorrow," I responded. To be honest I want to get the training done as soon as possible. The good thing is since I was in med school I only have to do the firefighters training. It has been a long six months since I started at the academy and the time has come for us to graduate. Well, graduate is a loose word here. We are getting our job assignments. There is a part of me that is praying that I get assigned to a firehouse that isn't the 110. It won't be a complete disaster if I am. It just means that Dad will have to put up with me.

"So Ella, where do you want to end up?" one of my friends asks.

"I don't really know," I say.

"Everyone listen up" The instructor yells, getting our attention.

"Ladies first, Calder, Ella the 110, Reid Jaylyn the 133," With our names rattled off he moves on to the rest of the group. An hour later I made it to the firehouse. Well, I am officially a paramedic. Now I just need to check in with my dad. That will be the awkward part.

"Excuse me, Ella, can I help you?" A man remarks pulling me out of my thoughts.

"Yes please, I'm looking for Captain Calder," I responded. It feels weird to call my dad by his rank and last name.

"My name is Sean by the way. His office is this way," Sean seems happy that there is fresh meat in the firehouse. It doesn't take long for us to reach my dad's office. Sean leaves as I knock on the door. My dad summons me in with a gesture.

"Dad I know what you are thinking in terms of me being here," I get to work on defending myself as I sit down. For some reason, my dad doesn't look bothered. I would if my daughter is working at the same firehouse as me. Oh well, there is nothing that I can do. I'm not going to ask for a transfer just because I don't want to work under my dad.

"You know I won't be bothered that you are here so long as you follow my orders," He replies. That means he won't be bothered with me being here as his orders are what will keep me safe.

"So should I call you dad or captain?" I get the obvious question out of the way. My dad seems to consider the question.

"Either one is fine. Now let me introduce you to everyone else," My dad announces as he gets up. I join him. After forty-five seconds we have made it to the rec area I can feel everyone turn their eyes towards me. The first person to approach me is a fellow paramedic. He must be my partner for this shift. He seems to have an aura that suggests that he has military training.

"Nice to meet you, Ella. My name is Daniel Scott and you will be with me for the shift," Daniel introduces himself. So far the two people that I have met seem to know my name. I put it down to the fact that my dad basically worships me and my brother. It started when my mum left. Before anyone else can make their introductions the signal bell rings. Luckily for the others, it is a medical-only call. After seven minutes we have made it to the scene. We are met by a panicked teenage girl.

"My friend. She can't breathe. She has asthma but I panicked and called 911. It was sudden," I am impressed that she can get the information out coherently.

"Don't worry you did the right thing. Can you show us to your friend?" I ask. She takes off. As we wander to the other side of the house I take note of the epi-pen and asthma puffer. I grab them so that I can save our resources for later. As soon as we reach the girl Daniel gets to work on assessing the girl.

"Well she has asthma however it got so bad that it has turned into anaphylaxis," Daniel explains.

"Here," I pass Daniel the epi-pen. It is tense as Daniel thrusts the needle into the girl's leg. After a few puffs of the puffer, the girl's breathing is stable enough to transport her.

"Ella, can you get the gurney, please? There are a few questions that I want to ask just to make sure that I have all of the information to pass along to the hospital doctors," Daniel asks. He clearly feels like there is more to this than meets the eye. After two minutes I am back with the gurney and Daniel seems satisfied with the other girl's answers.

"do you mind if I come with you? I'm her sister," She asks addressing me.

"not at all," Daniel replies for me. After eleven minutes we are finally on our way back to the firehouse.

"How did you notice the epi-pen? That house was a mess," Daniel asks. He is clearly impressed.

"I will put it to you this way, it pays to be observant," I say. It was a skill that I learnt from an early age as my brother would always try to hide injuries from me. Most were from school fights where he was standing up for himself. I always told him that if he was standing up for himself it wouldn't matter.
