Blindsided

It has been a couple of weeks since then and Howie is freaking out. His daughter is due any day now and nothing has happened. To add more chaos to the mix Maddie is hurrying him up for a name. Right now we are coming back from a call. Howie checks his phone for the millionth time today. Before I can say anything Eddie chimes in with his opinion.

"Shannon and I didn't know what to call Christopher. That was until we met him. Then we knew," Eddie explains. That makes sense. With that Howie sends Maddie a text with Eddie's idea. I can tell that Maddie replied instantly by the way that Howie's face scrunched.

"Let me guess, she didn't like that idea?" I ask as we turn our attention to getting ourselves to the rec room.

"She called me psycho," Howie responds. Bobby soon intercepts Howie as I head to the locker room. After a minute I am summoned.

"Didn't we just restock the ambulance?" I check as I join him.

"You can never be too prepared," Howie addresses both of us. I glance at Bobby as he leaves us.. A sigh falls from my mouth. There is nothing that he can do. Since the ambulance had been stocked before it is a matter of double-checking everything. After a few minutes of triple-checking everything we are about to head back to the rec area when the signal bell goes. After a few tense minutes, we have made it to one of the worst pile-ups that I have ever seen. As soon as our boots hit the ground Bobby radios in for backup. As soon as he is done he turns his attention to us.

"Ella, Chim I want you two to triage as many people as you can. Everyone else make sure you get the scene under control," Bobby takes charge. After what feels like an eternity Howie and I have done everything that we can. Luckily for us, backup has arrived. With that Howie and I turn our attention to getting people out.

"Make sure everybody stays back until all of the cars have been de-energised and all of the airbags have been checked," Bobby radios in. After Bobby briefs Athena, Bobby realises that there is a kid in the car. With that Howie and I move to help him. Eddie and I use a halligan while Buck gets the jaws.

"One. Two. Three," Eddie counts us in. With the countdown over Eddie and I use all of our combined strength to manually pry open the door. Unfortunately, we need Buck to hurry up.

"Buck get in there now," Sensing my worry Bobby hurries Buck. After what feels like an eternity Buck gives up.

"The roof is bent too far inwards," Buck announces. With that, we switched to plan B. After a tense minute, we finally have the roof off the car. I soon spotted the boy. The first thing that I notice is the rise and fall of his chest.

"Cap, I have eyes on the boy. He is still breathing," I announce.

"Alright. Buck get the halligan," With that order, Buck pries open what's left of the door. Now that we have access to the vehicle Howie and I get to work.

"We have a young male victim with a possible vertebrae break. Eddie get me a backboard," Howie gives us his report.

"Pulse is steady. Multiple lacerations and airbag burns," I give my report. There is something else but for some reason, I can't put my finger on it.

"What h-happened?" The woman asked weakly. Her slurred speech confirms my feelings.

"Do you think her slurred speech is a symptom of her injuries?" Athena asks as she approaches the vehicle.

"I can't be sure yet but I believe that she was driving under the influence," I voice my concerns.

"Dispatch says she was acting odd before the crash too," Athena only deepens my suspicion. After some back and forth we finally have a plan for getting the boy out.

"Ma'am, are you experiencing any pain or disorientation that may have led to your confusion?" The answer to that question will determine how we treat her.

"I think I've got something that added to her confusion," Athena remarks as she pulls the offending bottle from the wreckage.

"How many people have to die tonight because she was drunk and stupid?" Athena sighs as she apologetically glances at Bobby. She makes one last remark before excusing herself. After what feels like yet another eternity we have the kid out of the car and on the way to the hospital.

"Drunk driving with your only child in the car," I mutter. Normally I would be able to hide my feelings but this case has hit close to home. I know what drunkenness does to people.

"Ella, are you ok?" Bobby asks. To be honest I am the one that should be asking if he is ok.

"No, but I can handle it. It's our job right?" I snapped. Seeing people risk the lives of others rubs me the wrong way. She had her reasons though. Bobby nods as I turn my attention back to rescuing the woman. Before I can do anything a loud explosion rips through the air. It turns out one of the other firefighters didn't check the airbags before he tried to rescue the victim. With a few swift movements, I have the lady out of the car and onto the gurney. With that out of the way, I turn my attention to the downed firefighter.

"Captain we are moving Renfrow now," Howie remarks but it doesn't seem to be getting through to him. It looks like I'm not the only one who was hit hard by this call.

"The burn unit has been advised," Howie adds as he approaches Bobby all but snapping him out of his daze.

"Eddie, Ella I need an update," Bobby turns his attention to us.

"We are taking it slowly but we are close to getting her out," Eddie confirms. Something tells me that it is going to be a long night. After a couple of minutes, we finally have the woman free. After some questions from Athena send the ambulance with the woman away. Before I can do anything else an interesting radio call comes in.

"Captain Nash, can you spare a paramedic for a woman in labour at dispatch metro?" One of the dispatchers remarks.

"I'm pretty sure there are paramedics a lot closer to you" Bobby is confused but I know the exact reason why. Maddie is finally ready to give birth.

"Yes, but none of them are the baby's father," She replies. We glance at Howie. At least there is some light. A smile breaks out on Howe's face.

"We've got it from here, Chim, go meet your daughter," Bobby basically orders Howie to go.

"Are you sure?" Howie tentatively asks.

"I'm following that ambulance. You can ride with me," Athena offers. I've never seen Howie with as big of a grin as he has now. With Bobby's permission, he leaves. Bobby gives us the go-ahead to start the cleanup. Before we can do anything another radio call comes in.

"Dispatch to 118. Come in. This is Sue," The dispatcher remarks.

"Go for Captain Nash," Bobby confirms.

"Captain Nash we received a call from a driver who says he was in the pileup claiming he is still trapped in his car," Sue explains the situation.

"I believe we already extricated everybody involved. Are you sure they were in this crash?" Bobby confirms. That can only mean one thing. Our situation has gone from bad to worse.

"The line went dead before we could get any more details," Sue responds.

After a few seconds, May jumps in.

"The call came from Albert Han. Isn't that Chimney's brother?" May asks. Yes. Buck and I glance at each other. After a heart-stopping few seconds, Bobby gives us the order to search for him. After what feels like an eternity we finally find Albert. Unfortunately, it is not looking good. Buck and Eddie get to work. Once they have Albert free I get to work. As soon as Eddie and I get Albert loaded onto the ambulance I hock him up to the life pack.

"BP's sixty over thirty. He's hypotensive with tachycardia," Eddie informs me. That can only mean one thing.

"He must be bleeding internally. We are probably looking at a ruptured spleen. He is haemorrhaging right now," I reluctantly announced. That means there is nothing that Eddie or I can do.

"I'll alert the hospital to have massive transfusion protocol on standby," Eddie says. As soon as those words fall from his mouth an alarm sounds from the life pack. He is coding.

"I'm starting compressions. Push epinephrine," I order as I get to work on chest compressions. Come on Albert. You have to live so you can meet your niece. I can feel the emotions claw at me as I use all of my strength to pound on Albert's chest. After what feels like an eternity I notice that the lifepack has started to show a normal rhythm.

"He's got a pulse," Eddie confirms. I slump back on the chair. I am flooded with relief. Albert's eyes flutter open. At least we had a happy ending.

It is the morning after and I am at the hospital with Buck. I am checking up on Albert while Buck checks up on Maddie. Bobby thought it would be a good idea if I checked on him as last night was rough. Thankfully the excuse of being his sister-in-law worked in my favour. It is hard seeing someone who is basically a family member hooked up to various machines. A sigh falls from my mouth. There was a lot that could have gone wrong last night but thankfully Eddie and I were able to keep him alive. My attention is grabbed by a knock on the door.

"Ella, what happened?" Howie asks as he comes in.

"Well...he was forced off the road by the drunk driver and he suffered from major blood loss. Unfortunately, he did code along the way but Eddie and I managed to bring him back to life. Anyway, I shall leave you two alone. I've got someone else to check on," I excuse myself. Before you can ask I decided that I am going to check on Bobby as this case must have brought back memories for him. After finding Buck we head to Athena and Bobby's. After seventeen minutes of driving in complete silence, we made it to their place. I tentatively knock on the door. Athena is quick to answer it.

"How can I help you, Ella?" Athena asks as she lets me in. Buck decided that it would be a good idea to wait outside.

"Well, I was hoping that I could talk to Bobby. I can't shake the feeling that something is wrong," I voice my concerns.

"Unfortunately you just missed him. Can I get you any tea or coffee to drink while you wait?" Athena offers. I consider her offer.

"No thank you. Honestly, I just came to check on Bobby," I reply before a sigh falls from my mouth.

"It seems like last night was rough for you too," Athena observes.

"Yeah. Seeing Ablert like that reminded me of the night I lost my dad," I explain.

"I felt helpless when Albert coded. Anyway, I should go. Buck's waiting for me," I use the opportunity to leave. Honestly, I am just relieved that it ended well. I quickly rejoin Buck in the car. To be honest I am going to spend the day trying to relax. Last night was hell. I hope that it never happens again. Unfortunately, people do dumb things.
