An intense rescue

It has been a few weeks since then and thanks to some help from Bobby I have managed to work through my fears. Sure they still linger at the back of my mind however I know that I will be prepared for whatever life throws our way. As Bobby said we lose people. The trick is not to lose ourselves. Right now I am trying to choose a wedding venue with some help from Howie, Hen and Buck. It is proving to be a little difficult as I want a simple wedding but Buck wants to make it an event. I think I am starting to become a bridezilla already and we are nowhere near the date of our wedding.

"Honestly Buck I think a simple wedding would be better as that means we can spend more money on our honeymoon," I stand my ground. If last year is anything to go by I am going to need an extended honeymoon.

"She is right," Hen backs me up.

"But it would be nicer for us to splash out on the wedding itself. It is supposed to be our special day," Buck counters as he shuffles through countless brochures. It looks like we are both stressed about it.

"Look, guys, why don't you do what Bobby and Athena did?" Howie Suggests. I can feel my eyebrow raise.

"What do you mean by that," I ask.

"They asked the venues for a sample of wedding cake and the one with the best cake won. That's how they choose," Howie explains. I sigh as this is going nowhere fast. The wedding can't come soon enough. We are soon interrupted by a knock on the door.

"I'll get it," Howie excuses himself. After a couple of minutes, he comes back with a guest. Howie seems surprised.

"So... Everyone, this is my younger half-brother Albert. Albert these people are Ella, Buck and Hen," Howie makes the required introductions. He looks like he has seen a ghost. I will have to ask him about it later. Howie is quick to explain what we are doing here. Albert seems embarrassed.

"I can go if I am interrupting," Albert responds.

"Honestly I could do with as much help as I can get," I say. Yes, I am trying to rope a stranger into helping me. Before you can ask it is due to the fact that he is Howie's brother. He might have better insight into how we can go about getting married. He wouldn't have the backstory so he will hopefully have an open mind. It has been a couple of weeks since then and a lot has happened which has derailed our wedding planning entirely. Right now we are on our way to a call.

"So the mother says she called for her son and he never came back?" I ask to make sure I have the right idea of what's going on.

"Yes." Bobby confirms. Since I'm not needed in the ambulance I am riding in the truck. It's only when we find the boy that I will be needed in the ambulance. After a tense nine minutes, we made it to a semi-rural property. It is big. As soon as our boots hit the ground Bobby gives us our orders. The others have already begun their search however I have noticed something odd about the garden bed aside from it being bone dry. There is a rusted piece of metal that has been snapped in half.

"CAPTAIN OVER HERE," I yell at the top of my voice to grab their attention. There is no point in using the radio yet. With that, the others make a beeline towards me.

"What have you found?" Bobby asks.

"The boy fell down a well," I say as I lay myself down. Buck passes me a torch so that I can see down the well. I shine it down to reveal a mop of back hair on top of a blacked face. I notice that he is shivering ever so slightly. The water must be cold. After informing Bobby of the situation he gets to work on making plans. After what feels like an eternity we have come up with a plan. Now we need to execute it. That will be the long part. We need to make a parallel tunnel then we need to dig across. The good thing is we have established communication with the boy. Right now Eddie and I are debating as to who should go down.

"I'm telling you, Ella. It is better for me to go down. I have experience with tunnel rescues," Eddie is being insistent.

"Yes, but I am smaller. Besides I am the one that has been talking to him. He will want to see my face," I counter. We are getting nowhere fast. We are both making good points. Eddie holds out his hand. That can only mean one thing. We are going to play a game of scissors, paper, rock. I take him up on his offer. With one swift movement Eddie and I throw our hands into the shapes of our respective objects. I've gone with scissors and he has gone with rock. That means he is going down the well.

"Hey Ella, you don't have to worry. I'm sure Eddie knows what he is doing," Buck gets to work on reassuring me.

"I'm not saying he doesn't. I'm conscious of the fact that Christopher might lose his father if the weather turns south," I say as I point to the oncoming clouds.

"We will make sure he is fine. Bobby wants you to back him up," Howie adds. That means I need to change into the underground rescue kit. With a few swift movements, Eddie and I have the waterproof suits on. After a few more seconds Eddie is ready to be lowered down.

"Just remember Eddie you won't be in radio range so you have to give a tug on the line if anything happens," I say as I hook him up to the winch. It is tense as Eddie makes his way down. After what feels like an eternity Eddie tries the radio.

"I've...down...boy...good," It is garbled but it still gets his message across. Now for the hard part. Getting the boy out of the well. It has just gotten a lot harder. The predicted heavy rain starts. That means the digging crew have to stop as it is now unsafe for them. It also means that we can't dig a secondary tunnel if anything happens to Eddie. Well, we just have to sit back and wait. It is going to be a long thirty minutes. Since Bobby suggested that I be Eddie's backup, Buck has steadily grown more nervous.

"Buck if Eddie knows what he is doing you don't have to worry about me," I say to reassure him. It is funny how the tables have turned.

"Ella...down...boy needs...amedic," Again Eddie's radio message is garbled but I know exactly what he is asking for so does Buck.

"Look Buck before you can ask. I am already ready. With a few more swift movements I am secured to the harness. Howie quickly passes me a medical supply bag. After the most claustrophobic climb down I have made it. I make a beeline through the small tunnel towards Eddie.

"Ella, do you have a thermal blanket?" Eddie asks as I join him.

"Yes but first I need to get the harness on him. This place is going to flood at any moment," I warn him. We are definitely in a tight spot. Eddie nods as I get the rescue harness around the boy's chest. With that done I pull the thermal blanket over him. I am quick to guide him to the rescue tunnel. Eddie is close by. It doesn't take long for disaster to strike. I can feel the ground shift above my head. Eddie is quick to push us towards the hole however in doing so he gets trapped. I try my best to dig the dirt free but there is a problem. I can feel the rope lose its slack. That can only mean one thing.

"Ella to the 118 don't pull me up. Eddie is down, repeat don't pull me up Eddie is down," I use the radio even though it is going to be useless. I have to try. The next thing I know I am being dragged to safety with the boy.

"Eddie. Eddie is still down there," I say as I reach the top. I am quick to notice the digging rig has collapsed. That is the most likely cause of the cave-in. Now that I am out the others descend on me and the boy.

"Ella, what do you mean?" Bobby asks, pulling me aside.

"There was a cave in and Eddie pushed us forward before the cave collapsed. In doing so he got trapped," I explain whilst trying not to panic. Eddie knows what to look for in this situation. Besides, he works well under pressure. I am trying to think of reasons why Eddie will be ok. The thing is I may not have known him for as long as the others but he has helped me a lot, especially with Gavin. I guess I am like that with Christopher. As soon as I think of Christopher I lose it. As if reading my mind, Buck comes running.

"Hey Ella it is going to be ok," Buck begins to reassure me as he places his sodden hands on my shoulders.

"I know. It's just that I thought about Chris that's all. I'm sure Eddie will find a way. He has to for Chris," I reply. I am a little shaken up but with that thought I slowly come around.

"Ella can you give me a hand here," Howie calls out.

"We will continue this later," Buck remarks as I head to the ambulance.

"You just want to make sure that I am physically ok don't you?" I ask as a smirk crosses his face.

"The boy is fine. Just a little cold. Please kill me later," He pleads with me.

"You don't need to worry. Buck will kill you before I can lay a finger on you," I joke. After another eternity we are about to give up when I notice some movement in a small lake just off to the side. I ran over to the lake to find a water-logged but relieved Eddie. I pull his arm over my shoulder. We are both just as wet. I practically dragged him to the ambulance. Now that he is back Howie and I get to work. Since Eddie was fully submerged for so long we are going to have to take him to the hospital.

"Sorry Eddie but it is protocol. Since you were under the water for a while we have to take you to the hospital," I speak up before Eddie protests. To my surprise, he doesn't say anything. Instead, he gets comfortable on the gurney. It has been a couple of hours since then and Bobby has given us all the rest of the shift off. Right now I am laying in bed next to Buck who is sound asleep. I am staring at the ceiling. I am trying to fall asleep but my mind is plaguing me with visions of Buck being in Eddie's place. Something soon dawns on me.

"Hey, Buck?" I ask as I nudge him awake.

"Yes, Ella?" He asks as he rubs the tiredness from his eyes.

"I think I need to see a therapist," I responded. I know now is not the greatest time to come to that conclusion however thinking about today and every bad call that I have had has made me realise that I really should follow through on getting some real help.

"We can work out what we are going to do about it tomorrow. Just try to get some rest," Buck says as he pulls me into a hug. Despite my best efforts sleep eludes me. At least I can snuggle up with the love of my life. The thought makes me smile. It's just a little smile but it is still a smile. I am glad that fate brought me to the 118.

A/N I have a 911 Lone Star fan fic on AO3 but I don't feel confident enough to post it to Wattpad as I don't have a decent cover. I would really appreciate it if someone could make me a cover for it. Please message me if you can. Since this is an author's note I would like to remind you to vote and/or comment if you enjoy this story.
