Chapter 44

At the end of the day, Aizawa had to drag Akina away from her training, which when he walked into the clearing he was greeted by her bench pressing five entire trees. By the time her training ended, the sun had started to set and all of class A and B were standing in a group in front of the other teachers, Pixie Bob and another member of the Wild Wild Pussycats, Ragdoll, were standing behind a table of food. Looking around at all of her classmates, it was obvious that Akina was the only one who didn't look like death after that training session— which only meant she was going to work even harder tomorrow!

"Now. Remember what I said?" Pixie Bob asked. "We're not serving your food anymore!"

"If you guys wanna eat you'll have to make your own meals! Starting with curry!" Ragdoll said. Something about her reminded Akina of Happy, but the freckled mage couldn't put her finger on what.

"Yes ma'am." The students said, they even sounded close to death, causing Ragdoll to start laughing.

"Oh, man, you guys look exhausted! But that dosen't mean you can coast by making sloppy cat food!"

"Oh! I see." Iida said, perking up from beside Akina. "An important part of saving someone recovering from a disaster is providing for their physical needs as well as spiritual. Ah! This is a great opportunity! Let's make the most delicious curry in the world, everyone!"

Iida was barely able to rise the class' morale but eventually everyone started to move and work on making dinner.

"Bakugo, use an explosion to light that." Sero said, looking at Bakugo who was kneeling down by the heap of sticks.

The classes had broken up into separate groups, Akina being in the same group as Bakugo, Sero, and Tokoyami

"This is so beneath me." Bakugo said, flinging an explosion at the pot and causing almost the entire station to blow up.

"Rely on others and you'll never learn to start a fore yourself." Yaoyorozu said. "We should focus on acquiring new skills."

"Exactly what she said." Akina said, moving to the undamaged fire place beside the one Bakugo blew up and grabbing one of the sticks. "Don't worry, I got this." She placed the sticks between her hands and started to twirl it onto a larger stick that was laying in the pile. It only took a minute or two but eventually it caught fire and they had the perfect flame.

Bakugo scoffed and stood up, starting to walk away, only to be stopped when Akina created two vines and grabbed him by his arm. She stood up and placed her hands on her hips, "You're not going anywhere. You have to help us with making this curry, spark head."

Bakugo gritted his teeth and raised his hand, "Stop calling me by those stupid nicknames!"

"No. Now come over and help us make this curry."

Bakugo scoffed before he walked back over the the group. "Fine, but if any of you extras mess anything up I'm going to kill you, ya hear me?"

Akina hummed as she was looking at the box, "Yeah, sure. It says here we're going to need some fresh onions, grated ginger root..." She started muttering as she listed off the ingredients, small plants growing at her feet of what they needed. By the end of the list, by the end of the list the plants had grown into a small vegetable patch.

"You know they provided us with the veggies, right?"

"Oh, I know! I just think fresh veggies always make things taste better! Now, let's start cooking!"

After making the curry, their group served each other and sat down, watching as the rest of the class did the same. "We did it!" They all cheered before they started to shovel the food into their mouths.

"This is worse than that time I ate those weird serpents that time I was stranded in a desert." Akina said as she ate the food.

"That time you ate what now?" Mina asked.

"Oh yeah, some villagers had done this thing to pretty much animate their entire village, homes and all. Highly illegal where I'm from. Me and some others came across it when we were stranded in a desert. Natsu and Gray had found these weird mushrooms that caused them to grow mushrooms on their heads. Honestly sometimes I think that the entire thing wasn't real. But then I remember trying to eat one of those serpents." She got slightly pale and shivered, "I'll never forget the flavor."

"Are you okay there?" Jiro asked.

"No."

"Okay then."

"Oh hey, changing the subject completely but did anyone see that dragon earlier today?" Mina asked.

"Yeah, I did. I thought it was one of Pixie-bob's beasts doing some surveillance or something." Uraraka said.

"It wasn't her. She was near where Sato and I were training and was just as confused as I was when we saw it." Yaoyorozu said.

"Oh, sorry. That was me. I was trying to replicate Pixie-bob's earth beasts because I thought they looked cool."

"Ah, yeah that makes sense." Jiro said.

The rest of the girls nodded in agreement and they spent the rest of the dinner chatting about whatever came to mind. That night Akina was laying in her futon unable to sleep.

Sitting up, she looked around at all of her classmates and saw that they were dead asleep. Of course that was to be expected after the day they had. Still feeling energized, Akina decided to do some more personal training outside, as well as look around for any possible villains. She might be at camp but she was still technically working.

Getting up quietly, Akina snuck out of the room and walked along the hallway until she was outside. Taking a deep breath she felt the cool summer night breeze and the scent of the forest washed over her. Making sure no one had followed her, she ran into the forest, past trees and bushes. Eventually she found herself on a small overlook, the cave that Tokoyami was training in behind her.

Taking a deep breath Akina stood at the edge and looked over the forest, closing her eyes and listening to the sounds coming from the trees.

"What are you doing here?" A voice asked, causing Akina to open her eyes and see Kota standing not too far behind her.

"Same as you. I'm enjoying the view."

Kota scoffed and looked away, "I'm not enjoying the view I'm up here to get away from you stupid hero wannabes."

"Wannabe heroes, huh? Is that how you really feel about us?"

"Everyone here is crazy. Killing each other over stupid names like 'hero' and 'villain'. Always focusing on their quirks and seeing how much they can show off with them. Idiots. Now go back to camp with the other losers! I don't want to spend time with anymore of you stupid heroes up here anymore!"

"Anymore? Ah, Midoriya came up here to give you food earlier, didn't he? I thought I saw him go through the forest earlier." She glanced towards a plate of eaten curry on the ground not to far away from the two of them, "Here, Kota, come sit down." Akina sat at the edge of the cliff, her legs dangling over the side.

"What no way! Why don't you just go away and leave me alone!" He said, not moving from where he was standing.

"Or not, that's completely fine." Akina took a deep breath and looked over the forest, a silence falling over the two of them. In that silence Akina started to think about what Erza or Mira would say in this type of situation, mostly Mira since Erza might end up slapping the poor kid. "You know, Kota, I didn't always want to be a hero. To be honest it was the last thing I wanted when I was younger."

"If you didn't want to be a hero then why are you here?"

"I met some people, some people who became a family to me."

"Became like a family? What about your parents, weren't they your family?"

"They left me in a forest when I was a baby. I don't know why, I can only assume they didn't want anything to do with me. But then I met my foster dad. He taught me everything I needed to know. He... eventually left me too. I was alone, and scared." She frowned, remembering the morning she woke up only to see that Gio was gone, with no trace of him.

"So that's when you met those people?"

"Oh, no. I spent a year looking for my dad, but it was like he never existed in the first place. I asked around but everyone just thought I was crazy. Eventually I just gave up, and started to wander. It's dangerous for a kid to wander alone, and I encountered many people who wanted to harm me. Because of them I grew to hate those with abilities, and swore to myself that I'd never become a part of a guild- uh, that's what we call hero agencies where I'm from."

By now, Kota was sitting down a small distance away from Akina, but he seemed to be interested in what Akina was saying.

"I was like that for almost three years. Until I ran into the people I call my family today. They were tasked with beating some kind of monster in a forest I was in. Long story short I ended up fighting the creature alongside them and they ended up taking me to their guild hall practically against my will." She chuckled and remembered back to when Mira had quite literally picked her up and practically forced her onto a train back to Fairy Tail. "But, seeing all those people using their abilities to help others? Something inside me changed, of course, the change was gradual and I remember isolating myself for a while, but eventually... I grew to see what being a hero really meant."

"Yeah, and what's that?"

Akina smiled and looked at Kota, "Being a hero means to embrace everything you've been through, to use your power to protect the people you love. I don't know what you've been through Kota, and you don't have to tell me, but those experiences will only make you stronger in the future, no matter the path you choose."
