EMEKA

I was really angry. This whole situation was annoying. I didnt know if my plan was falling in place and it was really frustrating me. When we first came to this house and i saw Silvia, I could tell she was desperate which gave me every opportunity to get close to her but I didn't. Now Chinedu has made his move and she feel for him hopelessly or so he thinks. Now I am stuck in this predicament which could have been avoided.

I was so lost in my thoughts I didn't realize that Chidi had entered the room and was looking at me. When I finally noticed him I said "Bro i have a plan we are leaving here tomorrow", but the truth is I didn't have any plan I was just desperate to leave this house. Staying here reminded me of my failure not just with Silvia but in life.

I remember while growing up people always said they envied me, they wanted to be like me because I was always getting good grades in school and of course because I dated Njideka, the prettiest girl in our school. To people my life was perfect but truly it wasn't, i was actually a failure. I knew the only reason Njideka came to me was to avoid Emenike and my good grades nobody knew I cheated in all my exams.

The method back then to pass my exams were simple really before any major exam, the exam papers were kept in the vice principal's office and the door of the office had a broken handle which meant the door couldn't be locked, so all I had to do was come to the school at night. I didn't understand the reason our papers were kept so casually maybe they didnt think anyone knew the papers were here but I knew because I spent alot if time in that office giving report of what was happening as a senior prefect that I was.

When entering school to take thr papers at night, I knew that I couldn't use the gate so I jumped the fence, went to the vice principal's office got one script of each subject I was offering and left. I didn't need to worry about the security men because I knew they always went out at night to Mama Obinna's bar.

Once I got home I would normally answer all the questions using my textbooks and papa's android phone which he always hide under the sofa at night so no one will use it while he slept. Then once I was done i hide the papers and carried them to school when we had each subject.

Once it was time to start writing I would wait for thirty minutes pretending that I was writing, then once the invigilator wasn't looking I would slip out the already answered paper from a place that should not be mentioned, set it on my desk and continued pretending and as for the one I was given I would fold it and put it in my pocket.

That was my secret, I couldn't afford to tell my friends, they saw me as the smartest in the group if they found out my secret, they will look down on me.

All I knew at this point was I needed to leave this house as soon as possible.

"Chidi" I said " See we need to leave this house oo, we can't continue like this. We need cumot so we go start the hustle wai bring us come here abi wetin you think". I knew it wouldn't be hard to convince Chidi especially after he had washed that fieces infested toilet.

I was still talking to Chidi when Chinedu entered the room. He looked like someone who had just received bad news. "That one is his business" I thought to myself. Then he fell on his knees and started crying, telling us how he got Silvia pregnant,saying how scared he was, asking us to forgive him for what he did to us. I was very confused this was a guy I didn't want to see yet I felt so sorry for him. Chidi told him to get up, and told him he was our brother and that brothers always stick together. It was good that Chidi was there because if it were only me and Chinedu I would have just walked out of the room.

After Chidi and Chinedu had their 'brotherly moment', I went ahead to tell them 'the plan' which was really simple. Since we knew that Mr John had travelled, the plan was to wait until Silvia left for her shop then leave, but this plan had holes in it.

The first challenge we had was that the next day was a Saturday, a day which Silvia didn't leave for her shop early and her children didn't go to School.

Then it hit me like a brick, I realized that we had access to the kitchen so we could just put sleeping medicine inside the food and just like that out plan was born. All we had to do was wait.

The next morning when I woke up, Chinedu and Chidi were sleeping either side of me. I came down from the bed and put on a shirt and looked at the clock to be sure it's not midnight because it was still dark. Then I just stood there for a while looking at my two friends then I went to the door opened it slowly to avoid the screeching sound it made when it was opened to fast.

Once I was outside the room I went to Silvia's room. I knocked on the door because I knew it will be locked. She didn't open until I said my name I don't blame her though she needed to be sure. She opened the door pointing a torch light to my face because it was dark and I guess she wanted to confirm if it was really me.

"Did you do it" was the first thing I asked when i entered inside the room even though I knew the answer, I wanted to hear it from her mouth. Then she said. " I did it, he thinks it's his" I was so happy i hugged her and kissed her. This is wonderful, my plan is falling into place. I sat down on the bed beside Silvia thanking her for agreeing to this plan. Then I started to think about the next step of my plan and explained our plan to escape the next day to her

The truth is Chinedu wasn't the only one messing around with Silvia. He got to Silvia first no doubt, but the woman was desperate for attention so once I showed her more attention it was easy to get on her good side. I've never really liked Chinedu from childhood, he was always getting us into trouble but Chidi liked him so I had to put up with him, he was like that friend who you know through another friend.

So this pregnancy was a way to get rid of him or a least keep him really occupied. What Chinedu didn't doesn't know is that the reason he could only be with Silvia at night even when her husband wasn't around was because that was my time with her.

One night during our normal night meeting she told me she was pregnant. At first I freaked out, I was scared but once i composed myself I was able to think and plan a way for the situation to work to my benefit which was pinning it on Chinedu so he can carry the burden while I can focus on my life and the reason I came to Abuja in the first place to hustle.

Then I went back to our room laid on the bed, closed my eyes and forced myself to sleep so as not to raise any suspicions as to why i woke up so early.

The next time I woke up, the sun had already risen. It was so bright I had to squint my eyes. Then I managed to come down from the bed, checked the time and I found out It was 8:25 am. I noticed both Emeka and Chinedu's bags were already packed which meant they were ready to leave.

I quickly went to my bag took out my tooth brush and paste, then headed to the kitchen to get 'pure water' so I could brush my teeth. On the way to the kitchen I heard voices and from the living room, hearing those voices made me smile because I knew it was Chinedu at it again with Silvia but this time they were arguing, I'm not a genius I agree but i didn't need to be a genius to know what the argument was about.

Once I got to the kitchen I met Chidi who seem excited this morning and I decided not to ask what how was so happy about but then he said

"Bro good morning, men this morning get drama oo. I tell Chinedu make en tell Silvia say en no dey do this there love thing again. Na en the woman just dey para since morin"

I didn't know if to be shocked or what. "This boy is trying to spoil my plan I thought to myself". I just smiled and said " Abi make en stop so that an go fit concentrate on en life". That's the opposite of what I wanted but I couldn't let Chidi suspect a thing.

After Chidi had cooked the 'jollof rice' which the children were mean't to eat and fall asleep, we heard Silvia announce from the sitting room that she was going out with her children. It was just a shame that our rice will be a waste.

As soon as they left we packed our bags and ran to the nearest bus stop and boarded a bus that we didn't know where it was heading to although i heard conductor say something like 'Lu-gbe'.

So we were heading to this new place with no idea where we were going to stay and the fact that Chinedu was accompanying us didn't make it easy for me to process but I'll have to manage because I realised that as far as Emeka was here, Chinedu will be here but I knew there will be more opportunities to get rid of him.

As the bus moved I thought about many things, I removed the small paper Silvia have me to contact her. I couldn't just forget her after all she was carrying my child but for now had to go and hustle for a better
life.
