Prologue
"I don't wanna leave either but they might win if we don't fight" Mommy whispered.
Nico, who was 7 at the time, and I, who was 9, sat outside the kitchen listening to mom and dad whisper to each other. All we knew was they were leaving and we weren't going with them. We had picked up little bits of things that they said, but all we knew about where they were going was it was somewhere down spring.
"They would be safer if we stayed here to protect them," Daddy said. He banged the table with his webbed-fingered fist.
"Yes but the seaweeds could come in great numbers there would be no chance for our children's survival if they did," Mommy told him.
Nico looked at me, I knew what he was asking, we both were wondering it, who or what were the seaweeds, and what was so bad about them.
"Listen I already have it set up with my sister Nacie, we take them to her house, then we go fight," Mommy whispered.
They stood up. We silently swam back to our beds.
"Angel" My little brother whispered as I tucked him in.
"What is it?" I asked him.
"Why do Mommy and Daddy have to go fight?" He asked
"I don't know, but at least we're staying with our favorite aunt, Aunt Nacie" I whispered getting into bed.
"Night-Night Angel"
"Goodnight Nico."
