Chapter 11
All of Eris' things are packed up and ready to go home. She no longer had a problem with her hospital expenses because her father had already paid for them before he was imprisoned.
"Thank you, sister Gwen," She said smiling to the nurse who took care of her.
"Be careful," She replied. She waved at the woman before she got into a taxi. When she reached the front of their house, she looked at it. The surroundings are very quiet. No one will no longer greet her at the door when she goes home.
The guard who was working with them also resigned and looked for another job. Aya didn't kill him but just put him to sleep the night the crime happened. She walked to the door and slowly turned the door knob. She is renewing at the house because she is all alone now. She is not used to that.
She went to the living room and saw a sticky note there. She took it and read it. It came from her father.
Forgive us, darling, because we were not good parents to you. Don't imitate us. Be a good kid and serve as an inspiration to the people around you.
As for your mother, I buried her next to the yard because I don't want everything to be complicated. We love you so much, sweetie. That's what you'll always remember.
She was saddened by what she read. She crumpled it up and threw it in the trash. She hurried to their yard and the excavated soil can still be seen there.
She sat in front of it and touched her mother's grave, "Mom, I miss you so much." She even managed to laugh softly. She observed the entirety of her mother's grave. After that, she picked her favorite lilac plant and placed it in front of her mother's tomb.
"I promise I'll be a good daughter."
"I love you mom." She smiled and stood up before going back inside.
She looked at the fullness of the surroundings and thought to fix it. It's a shame if she abandons it. She has many memories in that house and she will never forget it just like that.
Since she can't lift heavy things yet, she just arranged the arrangements of the things inside. She rested after that. She also took some cold water to quench her thirst. Her eyes caught a photo album scattered under the sofa so she took it.
She sat down and opened them one by one. It contains pictures of her when she was young. It can be seen that she looks exactly like her father when she was just a baby, but when she grew up, she looks like her mother.
Even though her parents were not good examples, her love for them was more dominant. It's not that easy to forgive but she has to accept everything.
She closed the photo album and hid it in the drawer. After a while, the phone that was on the small table suddenly rang. She looked at it in wonder. It took a long time before she answered because various thoughts entered her mind.
The telephone just keep on ringing. She hesitated whether to answer or not. But eventually, she decided to take it. She slowly brought it close to her ear and waited for the person on the other line to speak.
[Hello? Good day! Are you Ma'am Eris Mallari? Are you the daughter of Albert Mallari?] It was a man's voice.
"Yes, it's me. Who are they?"
[Police officer, Ricardo Rodriguez, Ma'am. We are the ones who took your father. If you want to go see him, he's here now at the Phantom City Jail.]
"Ah, all right. Thank you very much for the information, Sir." She hung up and thought suddenly.
Will she visit her father? She didn't know if she was ready to see him again. Maybe she needs time and space before going to him.
Eris shook her head. She won't go there yet. She will visit him the other day. She will regain her strength first.
She sat on the sofa and turned on the TV. She's just switching channels because she's looking for good viewing. As she moved, she ran into another piece of news—a terrible piece of news.
'Phantom City Jail, consumed by fire after neglecting a candle. All inmates, dead.'
She was stunned by what she saw and heard. Her father is there. It means, her father is among the dead.
"D-Dad..." Tears quickly fell from her eyes.
"W-Why?" She can no longer understand what is being said on television. All she knows is that her father is gone. It was as if her chest was being stabbed again and again by the heaviness and pain.
Her mother is gone, is her father too? It's hard for her to breathe because her chest is getting tighter and tighter.
"Daddyyyy!!!" She started crying and left their house in a hurry.
She regretted not going to him sooner. She regrets that she pushed him away yesterday. She regrets saying hurtful words to him. She regrets that she didn't even tell him how much she loved him. The father who took care of her since she was a child. The father who plays with her everytime she cries. Now, he's gone.
"No... that's not true!" She quickly drives her car to the place.
"Dad, you can't leave me."
Both her cheeks and her clothes were wet from crying, "Dad, I'm sorry. Sorry, sorry!" She swiftly maneuvered her car.
She has arrived at the place so she hastily got out. She's huddling with people who are also crying.
"Daddy! Daddy!" She entered the caution tape but one of the police officers pulled her away.
"Ma'am, you are not allowed to enter there!" the police shouted while pulling her out of the border.
"I need to see my Daddy, please!" She looked around to find her father's body. Many dead were lined up on the floor but she still couldn't see her father.
"Daddy..." She said weakly. There was nothing she could do but to sit. The fire was extinguished but she still couldn't find her father. She remembered again that the news said that everyone was dead but why couldn't she see Albert? Where is he? She went around to the other side of the cell to look for more. She sees only wounded dead bodies and others whose whole bodies are almost burnt.
"Where are you, Dad?" She almost lost hope. Her feelings are mixed. Anger, sadness, and frustration. She can only think of one person who did those things to her and she blames it all on her. Eris wants to find her and put her in jail but she can't do that to Aya. She loves her and considers her a sister.
She doesn't even know where the woman has been since she killed her mother but she knows she will come back and she needs to prepare for her. She needs to talk to her to end all of that. She will be reckoned with her for the last time for her parents.
She still continued to cry. She walked again and searched. She stopped when she stared at a body lying on the floor. His whole body was burnt, but by his clothes and body, she knew him very well—it is her father.
She slowly went near him and just covered her mouth. She quickly hugged him. Not even disgust was seen in her.
"Daddyyyy!!!" Her cry echoed all around.
"No, nooooo!!!"
"My Daddy, please!" She shook his body but he didn't even respond to her. She feels a lot of pain. She doesn't know what her life will be like after what happened to her.
She just continued to wail. She feels that everyone has abandoned her. She felt that heaven and earth had entwined her. Nothing will hurt more than what she feels right now.
What she wants is justice for them. She wanted to take revenge but she remembered what her parents said before they died. She is very angry with Aya. If only she had known that she would do this to her, she would have avoided Aya in the first place. But it was too late, her parents were taken from her.
