Chapter 2: The blue cloth

Hey, here's chapter 2, enjoy!

The next day as Richard, Dave and Peter retreated to Richard's house and BOOM. The garbage blasted as smell spread everywhere. The ear-splitting noise was heard everywhere too. The three boys hit the ground as they waited for the explosion to cool down. As it did they got up and the first thing they saw was burning garbage bins. Peter and Dave rushed to the telephone booth.

While both of them ran to call the fire engine Richard concentrated on the sound. The crackling laughter reminded Richard of somebody. Mr Keen? No, his neighbours, the Beans? No. He stood there as still as the Statue of Liberty as the firefighters pulled him away from the raging fire. Peter was on the other side of the burning bins when a small blue piece of cloth flew at his face. As he pulled it off his face and stuffed it into his pocket he ran to his pals.

They went straight to Richard's house and sat on the 14-year-old grand sofa and they unfolded their story to a very inquisitive mother. In the end, Peter also added his part of the stinky blue cloth. As he removed the cloth Richard snatched it and examined it. "It is easy to tell that this incident was clearly on purpose," said Richard in a very concluding voice." You guys are saying that this is a planned event" said Dave in a thoughtful way." "Guys, my father always says that you should try and connect events while solving mysteries", said Peter in his usual gruff tone." "And that is what I was thinking". "So do you think that this was done behind a purpose 'Mr Daddy' teller", said Dave who never had a very good opinion about Peter. "Richard", asked Peter. "I am not able to find anything else that was precious in that useless old garage". Just then the smell of burning food met with Richard's mother and interrupted the whole conversation.

That evening Dave was out for dinner so Peter came over to Richard's place.

"Hey give me that cloth again I still feel something weird about it". As Richard examined it Peter helped himself to the yummiest lemon pudding. Richard found nothing special thing about the cloth so threw it back to Peter who failed to catch it. "Can't catch a piece of cloth and think of yourself as a great cricketer." "Well as you might feel it is a bit heavier than I thought it would be" and then threw it back to Richard. Richard examined it also felt that it was heavier than usual. He showed this to his mother who had a good sense for such things. As she looked at it she told the boys that there must be something stitched into the hem. Later that night Richard's mother, Mrs Grace opened the hem and as she found herself pulling out a dusty crumpled scrap of paper. She knew that it would be unfair to analyse it herself so she left it for the boys. The next morning as the boys woke; Mrs Grace showed them the delicate clue. As they opened they felt a sense of disappointment as they discovered a scrap of paper was indeed a grocery list. "There must be something more to this" complained Peter "Forget it, Peter! We just took a guess it was left behind by the thieves." but Peter strongly thought otherwise. He decided to investigate further.
