Chapter 8

"Hello? Anyone in here?" I whispered in the attic. I couldn't find the ghosts. I've been calling for a while now. No sign of them. I left and went downstairs to do more research on the house. I'll come back at midnight.
Apparently, the house had been sold and bought every year. Nobody has lived in my house for more than a year. We were almost to a year too. Maybe we would sell the house. Who knows what dad is thinking!
I made my way to my room. I knocked on the dresser drawer and the part of it popped out. I pulled and tugged on it until it shot completely out. I stared in shock as I looked at the object laying in the middle of the piece again. It was a little, GLOWING shape of, what was it? Fire? It sure looked like it.  It looked like a little key of fire. I looked at the spot on the wall. I went over to it and started peeling off the wallpaper.
Behind, was a safe type thing. Except it had 4 slots for keys. I went over to the firekey. That's what I called it anyway. I tried it into all of the slots. It fit perfectly in the far right slot. Suddenly, I heard footsteps coming from down the hall. I didn't know what to do! I put the wallpaper back on the wall and stood in front of it on time. The door opened and dad stood in the doorway.
"What are you doing, Iris?" Dad asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Uhhhh....." I didn't know what to say. I looked over. Darn it! I thought.
Darn it darn it darn it!
I left the piece of the drawer out! What do I do??!! I looked over at dad. He didn't seem to notice though. Let's hope it stays that way.
"Well, Catie is here. Just thought you should start quickly picking up. She's looking around upstairs right now," he said. He turned around and closed the door. I took some tape and closed the safe off. Catie CANT see what's behind the wall. For some reason, I knew that it was dangerous.
I put the piece of the drawer back in and looked around. Nothing important was lying out.
KNOCK
KNOCK
KNOCK
I opened the door to find Catie standing there, her long, chestnut hair high on her head, in a ponytail. Her gray-ish blue eyes shone bright with excitement. Her freckles stood out more, now that she was wearing less foundation. She was wearing black ripped jeans and a baby blue crop-top. She looked cute. She smiled once she saw me. Her silver braces reflected the light on my room.
"Come on in! It's great to see you," I said. She came in and sat down on my sofa.
"You have a beautiful room Iris!" Catie said.
"Thanks. What do you want to do?" I asked
"Well, I was thinking that since I'm going to be here for a while, I was thinking we could go EXPLORING!" Uh oh. We can't go exploring! She's going to find out about the secrets.
"Uhhhh...." I said stupidly. "Well, maybe we could go to the pool?"
"Oh that sounds like fun! THEN we can go exploring,"
"Umm.. sure." We picked out our swimsuits. Catie chose a patterned blue and gray tankini, and I chose my favorite, my teal bikini with strings hanging on the bottom. We headed out to the pool. On the way, we had the STRANGEST conversation ever.
"Iris?" Catie asked.
"Yeah?"
"It's so weird. My house seems.... " she trailed off.
"Seems what? Haunted? Spooky? Fun? Strange? What?!" I guessed.
"Spooky would be the word I guess," Catie said. Just then, my friend Jason came up on a skateboard.
"Hey Catie!" HE said, looking at her. Then he looked at me and whistled. "Dang! Nice swimsuit." I rolled my eyes. It's obvious that Jason likes me. What's to like? My hair is really bright blond and my eyes are green. It's a typical girl. I guess it's the freckles and dimples. For some reason, I blushed.
"Uhhhh.. thanks?" I said. Catie and I resumed. Jason said he'd meet us at the pool.
"Did you just, BLUSH?" Catie gawked.
"I did?? Umm.. well.. I don't know what happened! I swear I still don't like him!" I defended. Catie smirked and raised a brow.
"Uh huh. Surrrrrrrre," she said. Catie extended the r in sure. She does that all the time. Just then, my phone binged. It was Jason.
Jason😛:Hey Iris! I'm at the pool. Where are u?
Me:we're on our way. Don't worry about us.
Jason😛:I'm coming to find u.im getting nervous. What if something happens to u?
Me:I'm FINE! Stay there. We just need to turn the corner!!
Jason😛: oh all right. Cya.
We turned the corner to see Jason, looking at us. We made it to the pool. Jason opened the gate for us. Once again, I blushed. Lord knows why. I slipped into the pool. The warm water lapped at my chest. The sunshine poured down on my face. It made me feel relieved. Jason got in the pool too. So did Catie.
"Ahhhhhh. Nice and warm," Jason sighed.
"Maybe because you did something to the water!" Catie teased. We all laughed. It wasn't a funny joke, but we were all so relieved from the stress of school, we didn't care. It was getting close to November, so the heated pool felt nice.
"Let's just hope that the pool doesn't freeze over for Christmas," I said. Catie and Jason nodded in agreement. Today has been a busy, and rather stressful day for me, finding the firekey and researching the house and all, so I'm glad to be able to hang out with my friends. Maybe today wouldn't be so bad after all.
