Chapter 3

"Riley!"

"Terry!"

"Justin! Guys where are you?"

My brothers and I are chasing each other through a meadow filled with yellow tulips. The sun is just about to set and we're playing tag just like we did when we were younger. Oh how innocent and young our minds were. Not worried about piles of homework, the stress of wondering if you're gonna pass a test, whether you've gotten an A+ on your science project.

The only pain we've experienced is falling out of a tree or perhaps getting bitten by a mosquito. Nothing too bad.

Terry is it and he's laughing as he's chasing Justin and I. Not looking where I'm going, I fall into a pond.

I'm trying to swim up, but an invisible force is pulling me down. The only thing I can see is Terry and Justin peering down at me, reaching out for my hand. But I'm too far away.

I continue wrestling with the invisible force till I make it to the top except Terry and Justin aren't waiting for me there. The meadow filled with yellow tulips is gone, it was just my imagination. A mere illusion.

The only thing greeting me is half a plane and the dark stormy sky. The waves violently slap me back and force.  The invisible force grabs hold of my legs forcing me down again.

I continue battling the ocean for who knows how long until a muscular body fishes me from the sea.

Now they too are battling with the sea, for it has a mind of its own. But my savior is strong, and fights through the barrier that has kept me trapped from the surface.

"There they are! Hurry get the life jackets!" My mom and brothers are safely on the raft while my dad is trying to fight the roaring waters with me in his arms.

Once we get to the raft, Justin pulls me in and helps me put on my life jacket. My dad jumps in and him and Terry get the oars. The sea is starting to calm down. So dad and Terry paddle away.

"Wait! Where's Thomas?" I asked. Everyone but Thomas is on the raft.

"Riley, when you blacked out Thomas tried to help you but the nose of the plane kept diving into the water and he flew forward into the window. He died instantly." What? Thomas is dead but no... this was supposed to be a fun trip and someone died. This isn't fair!

"But how? Why? Dad, what if Thomas had a family to go back to?" Obviously my family is still in shock because no one answers.

Finally my father speaks. "I am sorry guys, Thomas's death is my fault. All of this is my fault, I planned for the perfect family vacation and look at what happened." We all look at what was once our plane sinking below us.

"Richard none of this is your fault. None of us knew this was gonna happen but it happened and all we can do is deal with it. Thomas's death isn't your fault babe. Okay?" My dad lays his head on my mom's lap. She runs her hand through his hair and whispers comforting words into his ear.

"Justin get dad's oar and let's get out of this area." Justin takes the oar and we starting moving east.

"Look! Look there!" I shout pointing to what looks like land. My mom and dad look to what I'm pointing at and snatch the oars from my brothers. Since they were resting, they have move energy to get us to that island ahead.

"Yes we're saved!" Justin exclaims.

When we board the island Justin is the first one to get out the raft.

"Finally land. Oh how I've missed you" Justin kisses the ground then spits out the sand that now sits on his lips.

My mom takes the raft out the water. "The raft is big enough to be a bed for us all. It could come in handy for other things too."

"Good thinking. Let's gather some rocks, I have an idea."

                                 •••

We almost complete our signal until a noise from the jungle catches our attention.

My dad picks up a huge stick from the beach and uses it for our defense. The bushes start rustling and the sound gets louder.

"Oh my god whatever you are please don't eat me. Take my annoying little brother and sister instead." Terry yells out.

"Wow really?" Justin and I both glare it him. The noise gets louder until a cute little monkey jumps out.

"Aww" My mom and I look at him/ her in awe. A cute little baby monkey is staring at us.

Justin bursts out laughing. "Oh no Terry, I hope it doesn't eat us. Please oh please little monkey don't nibble on our toes. Ha ha" Terry throws a stick at Justin.

The little monkey is still watching us.

"We should name it." My mom suggests.

"Shouldn't we figure out if it's boy or girl first?"

"Well, I don't wanna check"

"Name it whatever you want. Riley, you need to rest. You were hit pretty badly. Justin, stay with your sister. Terry, come with your mom and me. We'll collect some food. This is a tropical island so there's got to be some fruit."

*********
I know it was short, I normally go for 1,000 or more words but I wanted to update.

Also I didn't end with a cliffhanger like I did before. At least you know everyone is okay. Except for Thomas.

Unfortunately, he didn't live but he will be in our memory.
