20. Down By The Bay

I laid on my bed, staring up at the ceiling as I waited for Sky to get back from the mall. I wanted to talk to her tonight about the way she kept looking at me whenever I was around Drew, so hopefully she got back before it was too late at night. I wanted to get a good sleep for school tomorrow.

My cellphone buzzing with a text distracted me from the boredom of waiting for my roommate.

I curiously unlocked my phone and clicked on the message. Who could possibly be texting me?

From: Unknown Number

Research tomorrow at lunch in the library?

Huh? Who would text me that?

I quickly typed out a response asking the person who they were, and a few seconds later my phone buzzed with another text.

From: Unknown Number

I think you know exactly who I am Corey

I rolled my eyes as I read the text. They were right, I did know exactly who it was now.

I quickly added the person to my contacts before replying.

To: Andrew

How'd you get my number, Andrew?

I smirked as I hit send. I hated when he called me Corey but I could see why he did it, it was fun calling him by the name he despised.

My phone buzzed once again only seconds after I sent my text.

From: Andrew

I have my ways >:) now are we on for tomorrow or what?

I was confused for a moment after I read his text, but then I remembered that his first text was asking if I wanted to do research in the library at lunch tomorrow.

To: Andrew

What are we researching?

Moments after I sent the message my phone buzzed again. I could just picture Drew sitting on the couch in his dorm, waiting for my texts. Although the thought of him doing that was sort of strange, I didn't peg him for the type to reply to texts so quickly.

From: Andrew

Research to find out what happened to your parents

I inhaled sharply at his reply. He did promise that we were going to find out what happened, but at the time I just thought he was being nice. I never expected him to actually help.

To: Andrew

It's a date

I smirked at the message as I sent it. I bet he wouldn't know how to reply to that.

Sure enough my phone didn't buzz with another text, and I smiled triumphantly. I made Drew Bates speechless, though text. That has got to be a talent, he always had a response.

Just as I picked up my phone again, this time to text Sky, she walked through the door.

"It's about time." I grumbled, sitting up in bed.

She gave me a small smile, "Sorry, I just wanted to give you and Drew some alone time and I didn't know if you guys were gonna come back here or not."

My eyebrows furrowed in confusion, why would she think that?

Ignoring what she said, I got straight to the point of why I wanted to talk to her, "So, why have you been giving me this weird smile all day?"

"You really don't see it, do you?" She asked rhetorically.

What?

"You and Drew, there's something going on between you guys. You're in love." She stated bluntly.

"What?" I spluttered, choking on my spit.

Sky sat down beside me and rubbed my back to make sure I was okay.

"Sweetie, do you see the way he looks at you? I know you guys were sworn enemies or whatever but things are different now. I can see it in your eyes, and his."

I shook my head, this girl was absolutely crazy.

My phone buzzed in my hand but I ignored it, trying to process what Sky was saying.

There was no way Drew and I could ever be anything more than friends. I just started to see him as friend now, how could I possibly be in love with him?

I was not in love with him!

"You're insane." I finally said, searching Sky's face for any sign of humour.

She raised her hands in defeat, "Whatever helps you sleep at night. Just remember what I said."

I didn't reply and Sky took that as her cue to get ready for bed.

I looked back on everything that had recently happened with Drew, trying to see what Sky saw. She had only really seen us together today, so I focused on when we were mini putting.

Drew and I fell behind the group when we were walking through the mall, but that was just because we were joking around like friends.

And then while mini putting he showed me how to do it right, like a good friend would.

Then he drove me home, but that was because Sky arranged for him to. So I really didn't see what this girl was talking about.

Drew and I were just friends.

"Goodnight." Sky muttered once she was in bed.

"Night." I replied, shutting off my lamp at the same time as she shut off hers.

Before I went to sleep I remembered my phone buzzing with a text while I was taking with Sky.

I quickly unlocked my phone and checked the message.

From: Andrew

Are you flirting with me?

That was his oh so clever reply? And from the looks of the time stamp, it took him fifteen minutes to come up with it. That was just sad.

I quickly typed out a reply and sent it before putting my phone away and falling asleep.

To: Andrew

Not a chance :P

Lunchtime rolled around quickly and before I knew it I was in the library, waiting for Drew to show up for our research "date".

"Hey, ready to search the deepest darkest parts of the internet?" Was Drew's greeting when he arrived.

"As ready as I'll ever be." I muttered, racking my brain for what to type into google first as Drew took a seat at the computer beside me.

We both quickly logged into our school computer accounts and started up google.

"What should I search?" I asked, hoping Drew had some idea of what we were doing.

He quickly dug around in his backpack until he found what he wanted and pulled out a piece of paper.

"These are my dad's biggest competitors." He explained, sliding the paper towards me so I could read the names, before continuing, "Since your parents died over a device that my dad's company wanted, I thought these companies were the best place to start."

"That's smart, I'll take these ones." I replied, gesturing to the first three companies.

I quickly typed in the first name on the list and searched through articles on the company from around the time my parents died.

There wasn't much information on this one, and no new articles in the months surrounding my parents accident so after a little more digging and failing to find anything interesting I moved on to the next company.

"Does this person look familiar to you?" Drew suddenly asked, breaking our concentrated silence.

I looked over at his computer and he was pointing to someone in a staff picture.

I tried to find any familiarities in the man but nothing was sparking my memory. I don't think I'd ever seen him before.

"No, why?" I asked.

Drew shook his head, "He just looks really familiar to me, but I don't know where I've seen him before. I'm gonna look more into this company."

"Which company?" I asked so I could look them up too.

"Bryerson Tech."

I typed that into google and tons of information came up.

I again searched for news articles around the time of my parents death and something caught my eye.

Tragic accident kills valued employee

That seems suspicious.

I clicked on the link and it brought me to the full news article.

On August 15th 2016, Peter Bryerson, son of CEO James Bryerson, was in a fatal car accident.

He was pronounced dead on the scene, and as of now there is no information released on the circumstances of the accident.

Under the article was a picture of Peter Bryerson, and he was the guy Drew thought looked familiar.

I tugged on Drew's sleeve to get his attention, unable to use my voice.

"What is it?" He asked, and I pointed at my computer screen in reply.

I studied his face as he read the article. His features were relaxed, not giving anything away, and his icy grey blue eyes were focused.

"This has to be it." He said when he was done reading.

When I finally found my voice again I spoke up, "We need to find out why that guy looks familiar to you."

He nodded in agreement and furrowed his eyebrows as he thought of how we could do that.

"I could show my parents this, maybe they'll know something." He suggested after a minute.

I nodded, that was the best we could do with this information. But what if they didn't know anything? We'd be at another dead end, and the research we did today was our only lead. If his parents couldn't help us, we were screwed.

My parents would never get justice.

"Wanna ditch class for the rest of the day?" Drew suddenly asked, a twinkle of mischief in his eyes.

I opened my mouth to say no but then I thought about it. Did I really want to go to class after finding this new information? I knew I wouldn't be able to concentrate in class for the rest of the day.

"Yeah." I finally decided, and Drew's eyebrows shot up in surprise.

He didn't expect me to actually ditch, and to be fair, I never thought I would either.

Drew shut down his computer and I followed suit. Soon lunch would be over and that would make it harder to skip class.

"Let's get out of here." Drew suggested, slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

I smiled and nodded as I got my own backpack on, and together we headed out of the library.

Once we were in the hallway I realized that we didn't plan very far ahead. Where were we going to go? We weren't allowed off of school property during the week, and all the hang out dens were locked during school hours. There was nowhere for us to go.

I looked up at Drew to tell him that we shouldn't skip after all, and as if he knew what I was thinking, he spoke first.

"I have an idea. It'll be fun."

I followed him as he walked down some hallways, not realizing where we were going until we arrived.

Drew's dorm room.

"After you." He gestured for me to go in first, holding the door open.

I quickly entered and stood awkwardly in the middle of the room, not knowing what to do with myself.

"I'm going to teach you guitar." He announced, closing the door behind him.

Oh no.

I shook my head in protest but Drew wasn't having any of it.

He gently grabbed my wrist and led me into his bedroom where his guitars were.

I sat down on his bed as he grabbed a guitar and made sure it was in tune.

Once he was happy with it he handed it to me, an expectant look on his face.

Did he expect me to just magically know how to play?

"Uh, what do I do?" I asked when he still didn't say anything.

He took a seat beside me and replied, "Do you know anything about guitar?"

I was about to shake my head no when I remembered something from years ago. I went through a two month period where I wanted to learn guitar when I was about twelve years old, so my parents bought me a guitar and put me in lessons.

There was only one song I learnt before I quit.

I positioned my fingers on the strings to make the first chord, and started strumming, singing along to the song.

Down by the bay

Where the watermelons grow

Back to my home

I dare not go

Drew's hysterical laughter broke my concentration and I glared down at him when he fell to the floor.

"Hey! I was twelve the last time I played guitar!" I defended myself, laying the guitar on the bed beside me so I could cross my arms like a child.

"That was adorable." Drew laughed, finally getting up from the floor and gaining some composure.

"Shut up." I mumbled, my cheeks heating up in embarrassment.

"I'm sorry Cora. I just wasn't expecting that." He apologized once his laughter completely died down.

I looked into his sincere eyes and immediately forgave him. It was a pretty random song to play. If he started playing that I'd laugh too.

"Fine, you're forgiven." I finally said.

His face broke out into a heart stopping smile that lit up his whole face and I forgot how to breathe for a minute. He looked so handsome and happy smiling like that.

"If it makes you feel any better, the only thing I know on piano is twinkle twinkle little star."

An amused smile played on my lips at his words. That did make me feel better.

"Alright, are you gonna teach me this instrument or what?" I asked, changing the subject.

He gave me another beautiful smile, "Absolutely."
