19. Thirty-five Years Earlier

Thirty five years ago...

It was a dark and gloomy morning in Sierra Leone Leone and the sun's rays had barely made their way through the dense woods of the Korwe tropics. There, in a little wooden cottage, lay six young men of varying ages and origins.

Aaron, a Nigerian, twenty-six years of age, tall and built;

Kwesi, a Ghanaian, twenty-three, of an average height and a chubby physique;

Kelvin, also a Nigerian, twenty, and walked with a slightly slooping left shoulder;

Chunlé from Republic of Benin, twenty, short and stout with quick peering eyes;

Peter, a Senegalese, a frail looking nineteen-year old asthmatic of average height;

Mayende, from Togo, eighteen years of age, lean as well as tall.

These six migrated from their countries to Sierra Leone at a time when there was a boost in gold mining in the country. They all came from poor backgrounds in search of jobs that would help them survive each passing day, and so they ended up working in the gold mines.

They had all met at a mine one fateful day. Each of them was still new in the area and so had no proper home. While they worked, they got talking and learnt more about each other and their origins. So, they decided to live together as brothers.

Earnings at the gold mines were stipends in coins and the workmen where always searched before leaving the mines, to prevent them from stealing the precious stones. So each day, these six young men toiled and burrowed holes into the ground in search of gold, only to return home with just as much as will keep them fed.

This was how they progressed until they joined a brotherhood which was already in existence amongst the mine workers in the area. It was the Kuvnaki society, a secret society sworn by oath to protect the interest of each other, to live as brothers, fighting for each other and contending against whoever harms any member of the society. The penalty for any brother who betrays another brother was instant death by stabbing by as many members of the society that were available.

Their symbol was a crocodile, a symbol of vengeance amongst them. The dagger which they used to enact their sentence had a blade with a jagged edge, with a crocodile engraved on it.
