16. The Lawyer and the Will
It was past 4pm in the afternoon already. Detective Max was planning to go back to the station and report his findings to his chief.
He wasn't exactly sure whether to continue the investigation or not. He knew there were strong evidences against the young Murvelli and only he had a clear motive but at the same time there were salient points which could not have been by chance. Like the mud on the window for instance, and the fresh scratch upon the window sill which must have been made that night, all suggested ingress by an outside party.
Again, the floor of the study appeared too clean. If someone had entered the room that rainy and wet night, there should have been dirt and mud all about. And then there was the missing bottle.. Max was thinking hard. All these couldn't be less than the the missing links which were hidden in plain sight...
As he reflected on all these points and strolled to join the rest in the parlour, in walked in a man of about mid forties bearing a briefcase in his hand. He introduced himself as Murvelli's lawyer. Max then introduced himself as the detective investigating the case. He then called the lawyer out privately.
"Why have you come?" Max inquired.
"I heard about the death of the man," began the lawyer, "and when he was alive he mandated me to read the will out to the household on the event of his death. I've come in effect to that instruction."
"So what does the will contain?" Max asked.
The lawyer opened the briefcase and brought out a document and read it aloud. At the event of the death of Mr. Anthony Murvelli, all the wealth and all properties he has to his name will be bequeathed to his son Jason Murvelli if and only if he had attained the age of twenty-five. If not, the companies and assets will be managed by the wife Mrs. Rose Murvelli until the boy comes of age and is ready and available to lay claim to his inheritance."
"Phew!" Max whistled. "Does anyone besides you and I know about this will?"
"Well, I warned the deceased about the risks of putting his wife in knowledge of it, but still he told her anyway. He said he knew his wife and his son were always at odds and he didn't want any issues to arise after his death, that was why he had to tell her about it, warnly her sternly to be there for his son no matter what, and also for the will not to come as a shock to her. That was also why he opened a chain of business for the woman, for her to have her own assets all in her name."
"And did the son, Jason, know about the will?"
"I do not think he did."
"Thank you. You can go and read it to them now."
After hearing all this, Max immediately put a call through to the police department asking them to send three constables down and place them outside the mansion and set the place on a total lockdown. Nobody was supposed to leave the mansion. Everybody was a suspect now...
