Family Business
Looking at the markings before her, Sarah dusted the years of sand and dust from the wall. The sight before her making her hope grow. Nefertiri was a famous queen among the long line of rulers in Ancient Egypt as was her sister Neferure. No one had ever found their tomb, let alone their mummies. Lifting her light higher she read the markings that were written thousands of years before she was born.
"Rebirth...to be reunited with ones love and family for all eternity." Sarah read the words as a sudden cold chill came through the air.
Turning around she was expecting to see someone with the work crew behind her, yet she was alone. Making her way back through the tunnels that her team had been digging in for months, she wondered how they would get past the wall without ruining the so well-preserved hieroglyphics.
Coming to the surface, she saw the workers were still busy doing their jobs, so none of them had come down to disturb her. Making her way to her tent, she could hear yelling coming from another camp not too far from her own. Her team was not the only team looking for the past deep in the sand.
Running to help the others in the camp, she had no thought for her own safety. Instead, she felt a need to protect those who were in more danger. Once at the camp she saw a man on a horse and he was wearing red and black robes, he was shouting at a man who was on his knees, with his hands behind his head looking up at the robed man.
"O'Connell's are nothing but trouble here. You must leave and surrender your site before more death is upon your hands." the man warned.
Sarah came out and listened closely, she didn't want anyone to get hurt.
"This is my site! My mother claimed it for me and you are just pissed because you didn't claim it in time!" the other man, obviously an O'Connell yelled back.
Sarah began to think. Most tombs were connected and since her dig site was so close by, there was a chance the sites were connected, and no one knew about it yet. Putting her hands up in mock surrender, Sarah walked forward.
"Miss Worthington, why does it not shock me to see you out here!" the man sighed.
"I have my permits, I have the right to be at my site and my workers are hearing you and you might be scaring them off. That would damage all the work I have done all this time. Whatever troubles you, please I am sure we can come to an arrangement." Sarah offered trying to be the voice of reason.
"Mr. Alex O'Connell has no right to be her-" the man started but Sarah cut in.
"Forgive me but if he has permits, even if they were acquired by his mother, then he is allowed to be here. Going against said permits would be over stepping you power Lord Armond and you know it. Please, pack your things and come back on a non working day to discuss what arrangements you have made." Sarah spoke with confidence and prudence.
She went to Alex and helped him to stand up. He looked at her bewildered for a moment until they hear shouts coming from the tunnel Alex was right in front of.
"Mother!" Alex yelled as he ran inside.
Sarah ran right after him, she knew of his mother. Evelyn was well known in these parts and many other female Egyptologists looked up to her. She ran as fast as she could following Alex through the winding tunnel.
However Alex came to a halt and stopped Sarah from going any further. Looking up she saw that Evelyn stood on a what appeared to be a cliff that was slowly breaking right under her feet.
"Alex, don't move. It's breaking fast." Evelyn called out to her son.
Sarah turned her head and looked around the room, she saw a random rope hanging down and thought if she could grab it she could get it to Alex's mother. Would her steps be light enough though? Or would she plummet into the unknown below them? The ground below them started to shake and Sarah knew her time was running out.
Cautiously, she tip toed to the rope and grabbed hold of it. Turning back, she showed the rope to Alex who nodded seeming to understand her idea. She walked carefully back to Alex.
"I can get it to her." Alex said as he looked to Evelyn.
"No, Alex your weight would not last on there. I'll do it, I can get there and back without worrying as much as you would." Sarah said as she turned to Evelyn.
"Oh...Evie." Rick called from behind them.
"Don't dad, Sarah can get to her." Alex said as Sarah began to carefully and gently walk to Evie.
She avoided all the cracks that she could see. Her dark bown boots doing their best to try and keep her footsteps light. Sarah took the rope and tossed it to Evelyn. Smiling Evelyn grabbed it and tied it around her. Turning back to Rick and Alex, Sarah tossed the other side of the rope to the men so they could pull Evie back.
Suddenly the round began to crumble faster than before. Rick and Alex pulled as hard as they could, and Evelyn's body flung right to them. Sarah however did not have time to run. Alex looked at her in horror as she began to plummet into the darkness below.
"SARAH!" Alex screamed at the top of his lungs.
Sarah was petrified, she didn't know what she would land on or in. However, as she fell a sudden calm stretched over her as she yelled. Suddenly her body was swallowed in water. Trying with all her might to swim up, it only took a few moments to feel a pair of arms pull her up to the surface where she inhaled a deep breath spitting out the water. She felt the unknown hands push her to the edge and up onto the stable floor. That was the last thing she remembered before everything went dark.
