Chapter 9

"So, what exactly do you like about the forest?" Savannah asked as they walked in the woods, the moon shining brightly above them through the trees.

Dream shrugged, pulling her jacket closer around her. "The peace. The tranquility. The beauty of nature. It's one of the few places that haven't been tampered with by mankind."

"I hate to burst your little bubble, but the forest has definitely been 'tampered with by mankind', as you so interestingly put it."

Dream sighed. "I know that. I just like to think that it's plain nature. It's so beautiful, don't you think?"

"Beautiful? Maybe? It's too dark, and it's getting scary. It's so quiet."

"The quiet is what I like the most about it," Dream retorted.

"Can we please turn back?" Savannah begged. "Really. I'm getting scared. Coming to the woods was a mistake."

"Someday, Savannah. Someday you'll learn to enjoy nature the way I do. But fine," Dream said, checking her phone. "It is getting late. Let me see how to get home."

"Let's just turn back and go home the same way we got here," Savannah said, pulling on Dream's arm.

Dream sighed, shaking her head. "My phone GPS said that we can get back much faster if we go forward."

"Are you sure," Savannah said skeptically. Dream showed her the phone. "Fine," Savannah huffed, slightly annoyed. "But to make it up to me, we are definitely going to the mall the next time we hang out."

"You wish," Dream laughed. "Come on!"

Dream put her phone away, since the GPS just said to go straight, and they just walked straight forward.

"My legs hurt," Savannah said.

Dream shrugged. "It's good exercise."

"I guess," Savannah grumbled.

After about an hour, the two girls found themselves in the middle of nowhere.

"Would you stop complaining!" Dream said, getting irritated when Savannah wouldn't stop talking for ten minutes straight.

"It's been a full hour!" Savannah whined. "We're in the middle of nowhere!"

"Okay, do not panic," Dream said, bringing out her phone. "But we just might be lost. In the forest."

Savannah shrieked. Dream rolled her eyes.

"That's okay. We'll just use my GPS to get home. Let me see...which way is the best way to go..." Dream said, walking around.

"Um, Dream?" Savannah said.

"What?"

"There...there's a...stream...here."

"Of course there is! Streams are not uncommon in forests."

"I--I mean...there's...a person...in the stream. At...at least...I think...it's...a person."

"WHAT?!" Dream said, immediately rushing over. "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! We have to pull this person out! Savannah, call the police. Now!"

Savannah fumbled with Dream's phone as Dream pulled the person out of the stream. 9-1-1. There.

"Hello?" Savannah said, her voice shaky. "I--my friend and I--we were taking a stroll in the woods when we saw a person in the stream. Yes, please come immediately. My friend pulled the person out already."

Dream crouched over the person, unable to identify the person's age or gender, or anything about the person, for that matter.

"Woods..." the person muttered. "Woods..."

"The person's breathing is shallow!" Dream yelled at Savannah. "Tell them to hurry! I don't know CPR!"

"Hurry!" Savannah said into the phone. "The person might stop breathing. Okay. Okay." She turned to Dream. "They're coming as fast as they can."

"WOODS!!" the person screamed one last time before collapsing, their head falling down and hitting the ground with a thud.
