Chapter 53

"What do you mean, Chloe?" Dream's dad said angrily.

"It was her, Dad. I saw her face. There is no mistaking."

"And why was your best friend in New York, in a duffel bag?"

"I have no idea."

"Have you talked to her recently?"

"No," Dream said. "I called her several times, but she didn't pick up. I also called Mr. and Mrs. Scott, and their house phone. No one answered."

"That is strange, Chloe's always such a social person, and the Scotts in general are very chatty people."

"Yeah," Dream agreed.

"Well, I definitely hope to connect with them again soon. This whole thing is very concerning," Dream's dad frowned.

Very concerning indeed, thought Dream.

---

"If we were a movie, you'd be the right guy..."

"Mmmph," Dream groaned, rubbing her eyes and sitting up. What time was it?

"And I'd be the best friend, you'd fall in love with, in the end, we'd be laughing..."

Dream reached for her phone, which was on her nightstand. It was three in the morning.

Three. In the morning.

"Watching the sunset, fade to black, show the names, play the happy song..."

And the caller ID said Francesca was calling her. Great. She groggily answered the phone. "Hello?"

"I have big news!" Francesca announced over the phone.

"Are you pregnant? You sure sound like you are," Savannah grumbled. It was a group call. And of course, everyone was unhappy because Francesca called all of them at three in the morning.

"Of course not," Francesca scoffed. "I spent the last few years raising a kid with my sister, I am NOT interested in raising any more."

"Well?" Dream rubbed her eyes.

"We won the court case!"

"Huh? But isn't that like, next week?" Zac asked.

"Yep. But we got undeniable evidence that, if the judge doesn't send Mrs. Woods to jail, then he's going to jail for bribery."

"Wow, what's this great evidence?" Sawyer asked.

"Well...I can't exactly tell you guys yet... you should probably hear it from a special friend..." Francesca said.

"Hey everyone!" Chloe squealed.

"CHLOE?" Dream and Savannah said at the same time, confused.

"Yep. Surprised? I'm in New York!"

"What are you doing?" Dream asked. "Does this have anything to do with you being in a duffel bag in the alley between the apartment building I live in and the one Zac lives in?"

"Oh yeah, hehe," Chloe chuckled nervously, "Right. That. You know about that?"

"Heck I do!" Dream said. "What on earth were you guys doing?"

Chloe sighed. "It's a really, really long story." Her voice grew more excited. "But it was so fun and cool and I need to tell you guys about it sometime! Not here on the phone, of course. Once we can meet in person."

"Ugh," Dream grumbled. "I'm still grounded, though."

"Your dad sucks," Chloe grumbled.

"It's not like I can even go anywhere, I'm still in a wheelchair, remember?"

"Right," Sawyer said, "You're in a wheelchair, you're not paralyzed."

"Wow, my friends are so sympathetic," Dream rolled her eyes.

"Hey," Zac cut in, "Why don't we all meet at Dream's house, then?"

"Oh yeah!" Chloe said, "That works."

"Okay," Francesca agreed tightly.

"Wait a moment," Dream frowned, "Francesca, how do you know where I live?"

"I don't," Francesca shrugged. "Well, I didn't. Sinclair dumped Chloe's body in a random alley and when you, er, fell from the sky, I assumed you lived in one of the two buildings."

"Yeah," Chloe giggled, "Our code word was 'Chicken Little'. You know, sometimes Chicken Little is smarter than we all give him credit for."

"Well," Axel interrupted for the first time, "Why don't we all meet at Dream's house like, at noon or something?"

"Yeah, sure," Savannah said. Sawyer also agreed.

"Noon sounds good."

"Yeah, I'm free at noon," Zac said.

Dream shrugged. "Noon is fine for me."

"Okay," Francesca agreed, "Noon it is, I'll see you then."

Dream immediately grumbled and went straight back to bed.

---

"Good morning," Ava greeted as Dream wheeled herself into the kitchen.

"Hello, Ava," Dream was beginning to get used to her presence. "What are you doing up so early?"

"Oh, just looking for wedding venues," Ava responded.

Oh. Right.

Dream had forgotten that her dad and Ava's wedding was in only a few months, and they were beginning to make plans.

"What about you? You don't have school."

"Yeah, I was already awake, so I figured I'd get up," Dream shrugged.

"You know, your dad and I are planning to go check out some of the available venues in the area later today, do you want to come with us?" Ava suggested.

"I'd like to, but," Dream gestured to her wheelchair.

"Hm," Ava said, thinking. "You know, it's already been several days since you got back from the hospital, how long did your doctor say you had to stay in the wheelchair?"

"I don't know, actually. I think a week? I'm not sure. He didn't really talk to me much, he told Dad everything, though."

"Well, your dad can be a little forgetful sometimes, you should ask him."

"I will," Dream said, going back to her room, planning to binge watch a show.

"So I'm moving on, letting go, holding onto tomorrow," she absent-mindedly sang, "I've always got the memories, while I'm finding out who I'm gonna be...We might be apart but I hope you'll always know, you'll be with me..."

"Wherever I go," a deep voice sang as Dream opened the door to her room.

"AHHH!" she screeched, slamming the door, trying to steady her breath. It was just my imagination, it was just my imagination, she told herself, as she slowly opened the door...

And a dark haired boy stared at her, sitting on her bed and grinning.

Dream narrowed her eyes murderously. "Zac, I swear..."

"What?" he said. "My sister loved Hannah Montana too, so much that I know bits and pieces of some lyrics."

"I wasn't talking about the singing part," she glared at him, "I was talking about breaking into my room."

"What can I say? We agreed to come to your place at noon."

"It's eight in the morning. You're four hours early. Also, have you ever considered, I don't know, entering my room through the door?"

"Yeah, I can either leave my apartment, go down to the lobby, walk over to your apartment, take the elevator back up to the tenth floor, knock on your door, wait for someone to answer, and then go to your room. Or, I can jump from my window to yours. I'd prefer not to waste the time."

"This is illegal," Dream muttered, annoyed.

"If it's so illegal you can call the cops," Zac shrugged, indifferent.

"Yeah, I just might someday," Dream snapped. "And why are you here so early?"

"Oh, I just wanted to...talk."

"Talk, huh? What should we talk about?" Dream sat down on the chair by her desk.

"Erm..." Zac turned red, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck. "Well..."

"Ah," Dream giggled, nodding in understanding. "I see. You want to talk about Savannah. Okay, so I think she'll be satisfied with any kind of ring, really. She's not super materialistic, so a diamond ring should suffice. But then, of course, you need something to show her that you care when you propose. So, it should be a grand ceremony. Like, with hundreds of people? And then you call her to the center while everyone watches and you give an elaborate speech and--"

"Oh my gosh," Zac groaned, putting his face in his hands in embarrassment. "Why does your mind immediately jump to getting engaged?"

"Sorry," Dream shrugged, still giggling. "My dad's getting married soon, so he's been talking about that stuff...a lot."

"Great," Zac muttered.

"Well, what else is there to talk about? She likes you, you like her, life's too short to waste. I say ask her out."

Zac muttered something under his breath, annoyed.

"Hm," Dream said, deep in thought, "I'm thinking... a rainy day. A starry night. A cozy picnic."

"That would work well for you maybe," Zac rolled his eyes. "But not Savannah."

"Oh true," Dream said. "Maybe a big fancy expensive restaurant? And take her to the mall afterwards and get her something nice."

"That sounds more like Savannah," Zac agreed, nodding.

"So, you're doing it?"

"Huh?"

"You're asking her out?" Dream grinned.

"I...guess?"

"I hope you guys will be able to have, you know, an actual conversation, but good luck," Dream said giddily.

"Oh shut up," Zac turned red.

Dream rolled her eyes playfully.

Even though her and all her friends were on the verge of a huge court battle with Mrs. Woods, there were still good things to look forward to, like her dad's wedding and also, Zac and Savannah's wedding which might happen in like, ten years. Also, she could probably get out of her wheelchair soon.

So far, so good.
