"Seriously," Savannah said, sitting down on the white carpet in Dream's room. "Ten thousand dollars for a few nights?"
"Yeah, weird. Thankfully Marc paid it all off though."
"Wow, I wish I had a family friend like Marc," Savannah said wistfully.
Dream snorted. "Yeah, you wish."
"You know...I've been doing research on what you said about falling from really high places," Savannah commented. "Technically it's not really possible for someone as weak and tiny as you to survive."
Dream glowered. "Um, excuse me? Weak and tiny?"
"Well, you're short and skinny, and you barely have any muscle. And it was a hard fall. The injuries you suffered are like what would've happened if you had a parachute. Or landed in a pit of balloons or something."
"Um, does this look like I landed in a pit of balloons?" Dream gestured to her arm, which was now in a sling.
"It definitely doesn't look like you fell from a ten story building, that's for sure. Is there, some way, any way, for you to see what happened that night?"
Dream thought for a moment. "Wait a second."
"One. Okay, a second's up, now what?"
"Geez, I didn't mean literally," Dream rolled her eyes. "There should be a security camera around the apartments. They don't record what's inside each individual apartment, obviously, but there's a small chance they could have recorded what happened when I fell!"
"Good idea," Savannah said. "Where can we access the security cam footage?"
"In the lobby, probably?"
"Okay great, let's go."
Since Dream's legs were still recovering, she had to sit in a wheelchair for the time being. Savannah pushed her out of the room and into the living room.
"Where are you going, girls?" Ava said, seeing them on their way out.
"To the lobby."
"Okay," Ava nodded. "But remember, Trent said no leaving the building."
"We won't," Dream sighed, annoyed. Her dad had slightly loosened her rules of being grounded, but she still hated losing her freedom. It didn't help that she couldn't even walk on her own, unless pushing the wheels on her wheelchair counted.
Savannah pushed Dream into the elevator. "Lobby, right?"
"Yep."
"So," Savannah remarked, "Are we actually allowed to look at the security camera footage? Or do we have to like, distract the person at the lobby, or steal it, or--"
"For goodness sake, Savannah," Dream said. "Anyone can look at it. That's the point of the cameras. Like, if something they owned got stolen or what not."
"Oh, okay," Savannah answered, as the elevator doors opened. She pushed Dream into the lobby. "So which guy has access to the footage?"
"Um," Dream hesitated, "Try that guy at the front desk."
"Okay," Savannah pushed Dream over to the front desk. "Hey," she said to the young man behind the front desk. Oddly, his unusually tall height gave Dream a sense of deja vu but she'd seen Sinclair's face before and he was much older. But this guy...
"Hi, can I help you?" he asked.
"Yeah, I need access to the security footage...five days ago. Around ten at night?"
"Do you live here?" he squinted at Savannah.
"No, but Dream here," Savannah gestured at Dream, "She does."
"Really?"
"Yeah," Savannah snapped, irritated. "Just hand over the freaking security cam footage already!"
"I can only do that for residents of this apartment complex."
"I live here," Dream frowned.
"You can talk?" the guy looked surprised.
"Just because my legs are injured doesn't mean my vocal chords are," Dream snapped. This guy was really, really, annoying.
"Oh, I'm sorry. What's your name?"
"Dream Cadison."
"Okay..." he typed a few things into the computer next to him. "And what floor do you live on?"
"Tenth."
"Hm," he frowned. "Sorry, I don't have your name here."
"My dad's maybe?" Dream frowned.
"What's your dad's name?"
"Trent Cadison."
"We don't have a Trent Cadison living here either."
Dream frowned, feeling confused. They were definitely living here...
"Look here," Savannah said, snarling at the man. "I know for a fact that Dream and her dad live here, okay? So you can either show us the footage, or I'll knock the living daylights out of you and look at the footage myself."
The man took a step back, an intimidated yet reluctant expression on his face. "I guess I can check again...oh look there's a Cadison family living on the tenth floor."
"Then what are you waiting for?"
"Oh," he looked through the files. "Ah! Here he is. Okay, what do you need to see?"
"Just show us the footage of five nights ago at ten pm, for Pete's sake!" Savannah cried out in frustration.
"Who's Pete? And you want footage of the lobby?" the guy asked.
"I have no clue who freaking Pete is," Savannah growled dangerously, "And no, I want footage of the security camera between this apartment and the one next to it."
"Oh, in the alley?"
"Yes!" Savannah pulled at her hair.
"Calm down," Dream told her, although she was feeling frustrated herself.
"Who the heck hired this guy," Savannah muttered under her breath.
"Okay, here," the guy turned the computer over to face them, and played a video clip, sped up.
At first, everything was quiet, still, and silent. Then, out of nowhere, a tall, black-clad hooded figure walked into view, looking around.
"Sinclair," Dream hissed.
Then, just a second later, a skinny girl with black hair came into view. She came up behind Sinclair and tackled him to the ground. For a moment he tried to fight back, but she injected something into his arm and he slumped.
Dream looked at the man behind the front desk and he seemed to hiss at the computer. Huh. Strange.
Francesca then looked up, a very puzzled expression on her face. Her eyes widened, and she quickly moved Sinclair's limp body slightly to the right before an unconscious Dream toppled on top of him. There was no questioning the strange look on her face as she tried to understand what was going on. Then, she pushed Dream to the side, dragged Sinclair away, leaving the frame. .
A moment later, Dream's dad came into view, picking Dream up. Then, he left the frame too.
Francesca came back into view, dragging a huge duffel bag.
Dream and Savannah stared at the screen. Was that...
Francesca opened the duffel bag, and pulled a body from it.
Dream and Savannah shrieked at the sight.
There was a lot more shrieking coming from Dream and Savannah, and Francesca talking to the person for a few moments.
Then, the person sat up, their back turned to the camera. It seemed as if the person had a short conversation with Francesca, although there was no way of telling what they were saying because the security footage didn't have audio.
After a moment, the person stood up and turned around.
Dream and Savannah gasped loudly. Dream drew in a shaky breath.
"Chloe?"
