>>Chapter 4<<
Diagon Ally felt much less abysmal now that I was here for my school supplies. The colors of each store were brighter and I held the same air of excitement as the other students to be, as they rushed to get their wands and cauldrons for the upcoming Hogwarts semester.
Speaking of wands, my mom guided me towards Olivanders while my dad trailed behind us like a lost puppy. He'd seen Diagon Alley before, yet he still marveled at the beauty and oddity of the wizarding world. Such a muggle.
We stopped at a rather small and old store. In chipped gold lettering read Olivanders: Makers of quality wands since 382 B.C.
I looked up at my mom in awe. "Have they really been making wands that long? I wonder if they used different wand woods or cores back then? I wonder-"
My dad cut me off. "Why don't we go and find out, shall we?."
I laughed and stepped into Olivanders. The door chimed as I walked into a room full to the ceiling with small rectangle boxes.
Curiously, I walked over to them, running my hand over the seemingly ancient boxes. A thick layer of dust had accumulated on them I realized, quickly wiping my hand on my pants and crinkling my nose up in disgust. This place must be really old...
The clearing of someone's throat successfully gained my attention and I turned around. Behind a desk stood a man, who looked to be as old as the store itself.
"Ah Ms. Lawell, I've been expecting you." He rasped.
Slightly alarmed, I furrowed up my eyebrows. Though it seemed he had not noticed my reaction, as he motioned for me to come to the desk.
Tentatively, I walked over to who I assumed was Mr. Olivander himself. "Here for your first wand I presume?"
"Yes sir"
"Alright, let me see..." He mumbled to himself, hurrying over to the multitude of wand boxes. He then grabbed two boxes and walked back over to me.
"Here we are, let's give this one a go. Pear wood, unicorn hair core, slightly springy flexibility and ten inches long.
I grasped the wand in my hands. When nothing happened right away, I aimed it at an old chair in the corner and swished it.
The chair violently shook, nearly toppling over before finally settling. I quickly gave the wand back, my eyes wide.
"Well that clearly isn't your wand. Let's try this one. Larch wood, unicorn hair core, quite bendy flexibility and 9 3/4 inches long."
I gently held the wand, and immediately a warm feeling flooded my body. Warm as the sun on a hot day or the fire on a winters night, the feeling was amazing. This was my wand.
I glowed with happiness, clutching the wand to my heart. This was my most prized possession. It was the color of milk chocolate. Intricate swirls were carved into the handle of the wand, stopping as they met two bands of wood around 1/3 down the wand. The wand then curved slightly before straightening out. It was beautiful.

Next we walked to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions to get my Hogwarts uniform. My parents were having a friendly argument about what house they thougt I would be in.
"So Andrew honey, what house do you think Farren will be in?"
He thought for a minute, eyebrows furrowing in confusion. "Uh... maybe Slithering or Huffleduff?"
My mom and I looked at each other for a second before bursting into laughter. Truly it wasn't his fault, he hadn't even known the wizarding world existed before her.
"Dad, the four houses are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Mom was in Hufflepuff and I honestly don't care witch house I'm in. "
"Andrew, each house has different characteristics. Gryffindor is full of brave and chivalrous people, yet they are quite reckless and can be arrogant. This does not mean you can't be brave if you aren't in Gryffindor. Gryffindor's will jump headstrong into situations, willing to do anything to protect their friends, but they don't often consider consequences. This house is open to young wizards and witches of all kind, blood doesn't matter."
"Hufflepuff is full of kind and trustworthy people if I have to say so myself. Sadly, lots of people underestimate us, taking advantage of our sensitive sides. But we are not as weak like they say. Our mascot is the badger, a very fierce creature, and within every Hufflepuff is a fierce side. We can sometimes be stubborn, but are also open to those of all blood types. "
"Ravenclaw is full of the wise witches and wizards. They care a lot about their studies, and can almost always be seen with a book in their hands. They can sometimes come off as a bit snobbish, but that's because they enjoy sharing their opinion. They are curious people, and may seem a bit odd to a judgmental eye. But they will use their intelligence to prove right from wrong , and will always defend their friends."
"Slytherin has recently had a bad reputation, as its the house you know who and many of his death eaters came from. These people sadly let the purity of blood cloud their judgment. But this is not true for all of them I'm sure. Slytherin's are cunning and determined people, and can be true friends. " Finished my mom.
"I'm betting on Ravenclaw" my dad said with a smirk. My mom had told him in the past that if he was a wizard that he probably would be Ravenclaw.
Hufflepuff stubbornness shining proud, my mom replied "Yea well I'm betting on Hufflepuff, our daughter clearly takes after me more Andrew."
"Does not!"
"Does too!"
"Does not!"
"Does too!"
"Does not!"
"Guys! I don't care what house I'm in, but I kind of think it would be funny if I ended up in Gryffindor or something and you both ended up wrong." I laughed with a smirk.
They both glared at me, each seeming to be having a starring contest. My mom won, and my dad maturely stuck out his tongue.
My family is so weird.

After collecting the rest of my school supplies, we ended the day with some ice cream at Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor. I was about to dig into my mint chocolate chip, when a familiar face caught my eye. A boy my age was walking up the street with a blonde woman who I assumed was his mom.
"Hey Remus!"
He turned his head, before spotting me at the shop. Remus said something to his mom, before they both walked over.
"Hello dear, you must be Farren. Remus has told me all about your little Augurey adventure. Ah and you must be Farren's parents. I'm Hope Lupin."
My parents replied with their names, before starting to converse like old friends. At this rate, they would be here forever. I locked eyes with Remus, before we both snuck away.
"How your bird?" Remus asked a bit shyly.
"Oh! She healed up just fine. We released her a few days ago, but guess what?! I got a kitten and then the Augurey witch I named Brona came back with my Hogwarts letter!" I spewed out quickly, excited.
"That's great Farren! Maybe we can sit on the train together? Well I mean we don't have too but I thought it would just be nice to sit with someone you know..."
I giggled at his shyness. "That sounds lovely Remus" I chirped.
We both looked up to see that our parents had finished talking and had began searching for us.
I looked at him and we both ran back to our parents.
"Bye Mrs. Lupin! It was lovely meeting you. I'll see you on the train Remus!"
And with that, they left towards the Leaky Cauldron, and once my family had finished their ice cream, we followed. With wand in hand and a possible new friend, I left with my head held high. The future seemed bright.
