A Conversation between Men

While all of them were eating, the adults were busy talking about the current situation they were in, but Oliver didn't really listen. Nobody asked for his opinion anyway. In their eyes he was only a child craving for attention, not someone to have a serious conversation with. But he didn't mind, like this he could eat as much as he liked without getting interrupted. He had to do so as well. It would be silly to not take this opportunity.

In thoughts Oliver had to laugh at Yohio for being the representative of them both. He had to behave and not filling his stomach with all those delicacies.

As the day slowly passed by everybody sat toghether in the living room and talked. Oliver jawned, time didn't seem to fly at all and he was terribly bored. Not much later though Luka's husband took a seat towards Oliver. Wary the blonde glanced at him and leaned his cheek against his fist. The man stroke his purple hair from his sight away and smiled.

"May I hear your opinion to all of this?"

"What again?" Oliver blinked in surprise. Of all people in the room the blonde got asked about his opinion by him. That had never happened before and baffled Oliver. He sat up and tried to come up with an answer stuttering.

"Do we have any other choice?"

His counterpart chuckled. "Even out of a child's mouth the situation sounds inescapeable."

Oliver nodded weakly his head, while Gakupo's laugh resonated muffled in the back of his ears. In his head swirled a question that had bugged him for such a long time now. Now when he could talk to Luka's husband alone he wanted to make use of the moment.

"Gakupo..." Oliver trailed off to wait until his counterpart stopped laughing. Gakupo probably felt Oliver's seriousness as he went silent all of a sudden. Oliver glanced at the table and took a close look at all the crumbs he left from the cookies he had eaten just some minutes ago.

"Why did you even marry Luka?"

Silence fell between the two. Oliver looked up and saw Gakupo's surprised expression, for which the blonde kept quiet as well.  They simply looked at each other as the man cleared his throat and started to talk again.

"Well, whyever you asked me such question just now...I took Luka to wife because I took her as the right one for me. She is thoroughly honest, talented and the beauty herself."

"That's it?"

"Of course I could list more positive attractions of her..."

Oliver shook his head what made Gakupo go silent again. Oliver looked at his counterpart sternly.

"That's not what I meant. How could someone like you marry someone like her?"

Oliver knew very well that Gakupo understood. Back then Luka had lost all of her wealth and had to share an apartment with several other survivors. That was to the time she made it possible for Yohio and Oliver to meet as well. She was one of the poorest, but on the other hand Gakupo continued to live in upper class circumstances. The epidemic couldn't throw him out if his thrown. And still he had decided to marry a poor, young woman that had literally no experience when it came to running a household or family.

As Luka had gone off living together with Gakupo, Yohio and Oliver were utterly dissapointed in her. Both of them were determined she had been waiting all this time for a rich man getting her out of her pity and leaving everybody else behind. Until today Oliver was thinking like that, just that he was sure it was the other way round. Out of an unexplainable reason Gakupo had married her on his free will. And now it was the perfect time to find out why.

All this time Oliver's gaze kept on Gakupo how he kept on clearing his throat and let his eyes wander around the room. The blonde could see on his face how uneasy his counterpart was. Behind this mask lay something Oliver wanted to find out dearly. He noticed that the man wasn't about to speak up at all, for what Oliver did in his place.

"You surely didn't marry her because of her character traits only. Same goes for her looks that resembled to that time the one's of a woman living in poverty. Why did you decide to marry a woman from the underclass, if you could've also taken a rich one?"

Gakupo nodded and smiled a little while leaning over the table to Oliver. "That's not how love works, my dear. But don't you worry, there's still plenty of time to get to know that feeling."

"I don't need to learn anything about this." Oliver gritted his teeth to keep himself halfway silent. Irritated he narrowed his eyes and formed the hand he hid under the table to a fist. He tried to cool his short temper down as fast as possible, he had to concentrate. Sighing he looked in Gakupo's eyes deeply and tried to breathe more relaxed. The assumption he was about to speak out any moment hurt him. He didn't intend to make Luka feel bad, he wasn't that kind of person. But since she had left back then, this question didn't leave him alone. He had to do it, for his own sake.

"You married Luka because she had been rich once, am I right?"

Gakupo widened his eyes that lead to a clear sign for Oliver to be right. He sighed and rubbed his head with his left hand. Oliver was already expecting such answer, but didn't that it acutally hurt him. Still, this slight tearing in his chest confirmed the thoughts he had all this time. He saw Luka parts as a replace for his own mother and seeing her so unaware of her marriage, hurt him a lot. She always thought everything was fine, while it wasn't.

Oliver didn't want to tell her, though. He didn't want to hurt her even more in this situation. As he looked back to Gakupo he saw him not moving. He was slightly amazed he managed to intimidate the 'mighty' Gakupo.

"You wanted to marry her because of her wealth, as suddenly the virus bursted out. Since everything was prepared already and would've cost too much to decline it, you decided to marry here anyway, wasn't it like that?"

"Not only because of the money,"After some hesitating Gakupo toned his voice down to make sure nobody else than Oliver could hear him. Oliver huffed.

"But mainly because of the money."

With those words spoken Oliver stood up and left the guilty looking Gakupo on his own. He got the answer after all this time. And it was painful, for which Oliver didn't even want to give Luka any hints to find out the truth eventually. He knew Gakupo was a man who didn't hurt a woman out of nothing, he could see it in his eyes. Like that he didn't had to worry about Luka. All he wanted was an answer that confirmed or denied his assumption.

He turned to Yohio and Luka that looked at him wondering. Oliver hid the fist he had still formed to a fist to control his inner anger behind his back and faked a smile.

"It's already dark outside. Can we go back home?"

Both adolescents stood at the front door and put on their outdoor clothing. Gakupo was the only one who stood next to them, Luka was in the kitchen. Oliver glanced at the man with the long hair despising as the other one approached him. He grabbed Oliver's arm and pushed him closer. Bfroe he could say anything though, Oliver interrupted him harshly.

"Treat her well or you'll regret it," Oliver hissed and freed himself from the tight grip. At first Gakupo looked at him incredulous, but stepped back again. Without the other's notice Yohio eyed Oliver suspicious but kept quiet. All of them heard hurrying footsteps and eventually Luka entered the hallway with a filled bag. She handed the bag to Yohio and smiled widely.

"Here is a bit of food. You need it more than we do."

"We both feel very obliged, Luka," Oliver smiled and bowed down slightly, to what Luka could't hold back anymore and hugged the boy with tears of joy slowly finding their way down her face. Surprised Oliver gasped but didn't move to let Luka do what she needed right now. She rested her head on Oliver's and smiled happily.

"Please, do always take care of youselves."

Yohio and Oliver made their way back home to a time it was already dark outside, what made both feel quite uneasy. Especially to that time all of those infected people were difficult to sight in time and it was their hunting time as well.

They quickened their pace and looked around for danger. Oliver's eyes wandered down to Yohio's hand holding the bag Luka had given them not long ago. They really were dependent on such.

"What did you and Gakupo talk about that he acted so strange?" Yohio rose an eyebrow, waiting for an answer but Oliver continued to look straight.  He searched for fitting words to say, what did take its time. Slowly he opened his mouth to speak up and realized that his breath turned into water steam due to the cold temperature.

"That was a simple conversation between men."
