Chapter 6
Twig and I walked for a bit, avoiding all the humans to the best of our ability. When a human got too close I would try to hunt. Luckily Twig was able to redirect me to our destination. We arrived to the edge of the city. There weren't many people currently living in the area, which is an ideal area for a first meal. We ended up hiding behind some bushes. Twig pointed to a man who was gardening in his backyard. It was an older looking man; he was probably around in his late thirties. I could smell him from several feet away. He smelled so good, just like grilled salmon. I licked my lips and leaned closer on the bushes that we hid by.
With a hand on my shoulder, Twig got up from their hiding place. "Watch this. Next time you'll try on your own." They whispered. As if in a blink of an eye the man was already on the ground, Twig already leaning over his body. The man was never knew of their existence. Twig's hands were covered with blood which was quickly licked up with their tongue. The man's scent wafted into my nose. I rushed over as fast as Twig when taking him down.
His facial expression was still calm, with a faint smile. This man never even knew what happened. His own blood was smeared across his face and stained his clothes. I wanted to eat, but I started to get intrusive thoughts. 'Did he have a family? Will he be missed?' He was a person, Twig noticed me staring at the man. They snapped their fingers in my face, bringing me out of my trance. I looked over at them, my face flushed realizing that we just killed someone.
"What's wrong? Dig in." Twig crossed their arms. Their attitude towards the whole situation showed that they have done this before. I looked down at the lifeless man, who's peaceful expression still left on his face. Everything in my body wanted to eat from him. I felt my stomach growl and my body shake as I knelt down to feast. I lost the last bit of humanity as I used my new set of sharp canines to bite into the his neck.
The rush of blood I got from the man shocked me but it tasted out of this world. I shoved my face into the man's neck, just like the monster did to me. My hunger soon faded and I noticed that there wasn't much left to eat. I retracted my jaws from the body and let it drop to the floor. As I licked my lips I closed the man's eyes in respect and thanks to him.
Sighing, I looked at Twig who was on their phone. They probably already ate, or at least knew how hungry I was. I walked over to Twig and sighed. "So what do we do with him?" I asked, looking over my shoulder at the corpse on the ground.
"We do this." Twig walked over and picked the body up. and walked to the body of water that hugged the edge of our town. As if nothing, Twig threw him into the water. The body soon rose to the top and started floating away. "We don't really have a protocol. The only rule is that we feed once a week and not ever at the same place." That was why Twig didn't eat with me. It made sense; I nodded. They looked around the area before beginning to talk again. "Anyways, I hope you're full. It be a while before-" Twig stopped midsentence and held their temples. They held their breath, their lips moving but no words were coming out. It almost looked like they were in pain while doing so.
They were in that state for only a few seconds before releasing their grasp on themselves. "Are you okay?" I asked worryingly as I help their shoulder. Twig smiled and nodded. They took a hold of my hand and held it just like when we were back in my bedroom.
"I'm okay. That was just Arius. He wants us to go the Hideout now. We should hurry." With their hand still in mine, they led me away from the scene of the crime that we just committed. We were finally going to this place that Twig talks about. I was nervous to see the man that changed me and to ask why, but also to see more people like me and Twig. With that, we set off.
